Unsteady Flow Toward Partially Penetrating Artesian Wells, Y. H. Huang

A numerical method programmed for a high-speed computer was developed for determining the drawdown around an artesian well. A salient feature of the program is that it can be used for both fully and partially penetrating wells in either infinite or finite aquifers. The method Involves the application of finite difference equations to the well-known heat equation using a graded network. A comparison of the finite difference solutions with those obtained from the close-form formulas of Muskat, Theis, and Hantush indicates the validity of the method. The purpose of this study was to apply the "uniqueness concept" to the quantification of the intangible values of natural streams. The methodology is based on procedures developed by Luna B. Leopold and Maria O. Marchand of the U.S. Geological Survey. It involves the evaluation of a set of characteristics or factors for selected stream sites. Each factor is rated for each site on a numerical scale indicative of the range of possible "values" for that factor. An "uniqueness ratio" (the reciprocal of the number of stream sites sharing a given category rating) is then computed for each stream for …

Cassidy (1) fully outlines the historical progress of research to 1968 about the carbamate reaction; this paper will simply summarize that effort. It is presently believed that carbon dioxide is transported by the blood in three ways: 1) dissolved CO2 and carbonic acid, 2) bicarbonate ions, and 3) carbamate. Roughton and Rossi-Bernardi (10) have proposed the use of a glycylglycine and CO2 model for the carbamate reaction. The formation of a carbamate on hemoglobin is one method proposed for carbon dioxide transport in the blood. As of yet, no direct method has been reported for quantitatively determining to what extent carbamate formation occurs. The phosphorescence of glycine carbamate is of interest in this problem. Glycine is structurally similar to the globin endings, so that it presents a model that is simpler and more easily studied but still contains a sufficient degree of similarity to hemoglobin for the purpose of studying this reaction. The Uniform Charge Cloud Method, a model used to describe atoms and molecules, has been investigated. In the model, electrons are viewed as spheres with a constant charge density throughout their volume. In previous studies, it was found that the interelectron repulsion energies calculated for helium were too high, bond distances calculated for molecules were too short, and the model was unable to predict term values in accordance with Hund's Rules. In order to reduce these errors, electron correlation was introduced into the model. It was found that the errors were too large to be corrected by electron correlation. The …

The form of f may or may not be known, and ϴ is a parameter (possibly vector-valued) which describes the population. The statistician's job is to estimate or to test hypotheses about the unknown parameter ϴ. In this paper, we shall consider interval estimation of the mean of the normal density function.

During Pennsylvanian time the Lucero region of west central New Mexico was located along the southeastern part of the Zuni uplift and along the western and central part of the Lucero basin. The Lucero basin is part of the broad Pennsylvanian seaway that extended north-northwestward through central New Mexico to the Paradox basin on the north and the Orogrande basin on the south. Positive elements associated with the Lucero basin were the Zuni uplift to the west, the Penasco-Uncompahgre uplifts to the northeast, the Joyita uplift. to the east,. and the Pedernal uplift farther to the east.

It was undertaken to investigate the intensity ratio of refracted light polarized parallel and perpendicular to the plane of incidence. The primary object of the experiment was to obtain this ratio for light incident at very nearly the critical angle on a water-air interface, the light having first passed through the water. A laser was used to produce the light beam and the experimental results were compared with the theory propounded by Fresnel for infinite plane waves and elsewhere asserted to hold for bound plane waves. The method of lattice statics, in the zero-order approximation, is used to evaluate the Schottky-pair formation energies and the displacement fields about positive- and negative-ion vacancies for all alkali halide crystals with rock-salt structures. The deformation-dipole model, used extensively in earlier work on the lattice dynamics of these crystals, is employed to describe the host lattice. Long-range Coulomb interactions are included explicitly, and short-range repulsive interactions are described by a simple Born-Mayer potential. Comparison is made with earlier Mott-Littleton-type calculations and very satisfactory agreement is found. Comparison with available experimental values is somewhat less satisfactory, particularly regarding the lithium salts; …

It is difficult at best to evaluate the biological and chemical damages of oil pollution, but the physical effects are graphically evident in the blackened beaches and coastlines around the world and in the floating "tar-balls" found in mid-ocean. It is this dramatically visible effect that has stirred public concern. Thus, prevention of such damage is high on the list of priorities for both national and international concern. In the face of the ever increasing potential for pollution, President Nixon has pledged that federal agencies will take the lead in pollution abatement programs.

Mercury contamination of food products results from contact with soil, water, and air polluted with mercury from industrial sources, as well as from the use of mercury-containing pesticides and fungicides on plants. A method was developed for extracting mercury from tobacco products. The mercury content of various tobacco products was determined, using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer.

A systematic revision is presented for the genus Brephosceles. Data on external morphology, zoogeography, and host-parasite relationships are included. Thirteen named and thirty new species are recognized and described. Solving mathematical programming problems without the aid of electronic computers is very time consuming even for a mathematical model consisting of only a few constraints and variables. The objective of this report is to illustrate the use of mathematical programming computer routines available at Utah State University. Computer routines discussed are the International Business Machines (IBM), Mathematical Programming System (MPS) package, a quadratic programming routing, a zero-one integer programming routing, and a transportation code. Root resorption is a constant finding on the roots of replanted teeth. In this study it was suggested that root resorption is perhaps related to inflammation and that teeth incubated in an anti-inflammatory agent such as triamcinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid, before replantation would have less resorption. To investigate this hypothesis nineteen mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were extracted and replanted. Ten of the teeth were incubated for five minutes in the steroid and nine control teeth for the same period in a saline solution. The appearances of the gonads are described in males and females of 18 Inia geoffrensis, 11 Pontoporia blainvillei, and eight Sotalia fluviatilis from South America. Males of I. geoffrensis become sexually active at a length of about 228 centimeters, females at 175 to 180 centimeters. Length at birth is 76 to 80 centimeters; parturition occurs from about July to September in the upper Amazon. Males of P. blainvillei are still sexually immature at a length of 128.5 centimeters, females become sexually active at a length of 137 centimeters. In the Monte Largo Hills in the central part of north-central New Mexico, Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks, Paleozoic sediments, and Tertiary intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks occur. The metamorphics consist of a series of quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, mica schist, metaquartzite, and hornblende schists. These rocks were

derived from Precambrian sediments, mostly sandstones, arkoses and impure dolomites that were subjected to amphibolite facies synkinematic metamorphism. The Precambrian alkali granite appears to have been allochthonously emplaced with evidence near the contact of the quartzofeldspathic metamorphics for a parautochthonous formation. Quartz veins and pegmatite dikes of Precambrian age are also present. The sediments …

The sedimentary history of the Gallup Sandstone is studied through the field investigation and laboratory analysis of samples taken from four measured sections in the vicinity of the San Juan River and one section near the Red Rock Highway. In addition to field data, textural parameters and dolomite and glauconite content of sandstone samples are the basis for interpretations of the sedimentary history and environment of deposition of the Gallup Sandstone.

A plot of the mean grain-size and sorting along with stratigraphic sections reveals that most of the Gallup Sandstone was deposited in a regressive sea, and that the regression …
