Regressive And Transgressive Phenomena In The Gallup Sandstone In The Northwestern Part Of San Juan County, New Mexico., Francis Amrisar Kaharoeddin May 1971

Regressive And Transgressive Phenomena In The Gallup Sandstone In The Northwestern Part Of San Juan County, New Mexico., Francis Amrisar Kaharoeddin

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The sedimentary history of the Gallup Sandstone is studied through the field investigation and laboratory analysis of samples taken from four measured sections in the vicinity of the San Juan River and one section near the Red Rock Highway. In addition to field data, textural parameters and dolomite and glauconite content of sandstone samples are the basis for interpretations of the sedimentary history and environment of deposition of the Gallup Sandstone.

A plot of the mean grain-size and sorting along with stratigraphic sections reveals that most of the Gallup Sandstone was deposited in a regressive sea, and that the regression …

A Monte Carlo Evaluation Of A Nonparametric Technique For Estimating The Hazard Function, Sheng Jia Lin May 1971

A Monte Carlo Evaluation Of A Nonparametric Technique For Estimating The Hazard Function, Sheng Jia Lin

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

This research is primarily concerned with the estimation of the Hazard functions, the Hazard function is the failure rate at time t, and is defined as -R '(t)/R(t), so it plays an important role in Reliability.

In order to compare and evaluate the estimation methods, it is convenient to select one distribution in this research. Since the Weibull distribution is a useful distribution in Reliability, the Weibull distribution is used in this paper.

I. Studies Toward The Synthesis Of Echinodithianic Acid And Ii. The Temperature Dependent Nmr Spectrum Of Methyl N-Acetylsarcosinate, Alan Leroy Love May 1971

I. Studies Toward The Synthesis Of Echinodithianic Acid And Ii. The Temperature Dependent Nmr Spectrum Of Methyl N-Acetylsarcosinate, Alan Leroy Love

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Approaches to the preparation of echinodithianic acid (5) from 2,5-dicarbomethoxy-1,4-dithiane (1) were not successful, due to the inability to carboxylate or carboalkoxylate 1 at carbons 2 and 5. Studies toward the synthesis of 5 utilizing methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate (8) have been investigated. The electrophilic addition of sulfur dichloride to 8 yielded bis-(2-acetamido-2-carbo-methoxyvin-1-yl) sulfide, while the addition of thiocyanogen chloride to 8 produced methyl 2-acetamido-3-thiocyanato-acrylate.

As electrophilic additions of unsymmetrical dipolar reagents to methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate (8) are not reported in the literature, the addition of hydrogen bromide to 8 was studied to determine the orientation effect of the acetamido group.

Methyl 2-acetamido-2-bromopropionate …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The mapped area, in southeastern Idaho, includes part of the Bannock Range, on the west, and Cache Valley, on the east. It is centered about 13 miles northwest of Preston, Idaho, and measures 12 miles in the north-south direction and 8.5 miles in the east-west direction.

The Bannock Range, in the western part of the mapped area, consists of Precambrian and Cambrian stratigraphic units. The Precambrian units are as follows: (1) lower Precambrian argillite, (2) Precambrian quartzite, and (3) upper Mutual Formation. The Brigham Formation, which overlies the Mutual, is probably of Cambrian age; however, the lower part may be …

Resource Requirements Determination (Based On Statistical Methods), Robert L. Howard May 1971

Resource Requirements Determination (Based On Statistical Methods), Robert L. Howard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Two methods of determining resource requirements at an Air Force maintenance depot were developed.

The first method is designed for new workloads and is based on infinite queuing theory formulas. Tables have been developed for this method.

The second method is designed for workload with, at minimum, several months of historical data. An optimum fit test was designed to aid in fitting and smoothing the empirical data to the normal distribution. These data are then input to simulation model for determination of resource requirements.

Statistical Analysis For Tolerances Of Noxious Weed Seeds, Yadolah Dodge May 1971

Statistical Analysis For Tolerances Of Noxious Weed Seeds, Yadolah Dodge

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An analysis of the previous method for testing tolerances of noxious weed seeds was performed. Problems of the current techniques were discussed, and the solution to these problems was given.

A new technique of testing through the sequential test ratio was developed, and results examined.

The sequential test was found to be useful enough to include the use of it in determining tolerances for noxious weed seeds.

This study did show that the use of sequential tests does have excellent potential and flexibility as a statistical tool for the tolerances of noxious weed seeds.

Spawning And Early Life History Of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides) In Wahweap Bay, Lake Powell, Kent D. Miller

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Spawning time and habitat of largemouth bass, survival of embryos, and growth and food habits of fingerlings were studied in 1968 and 1969 at Wahweap Bay, Lake Powell. Spawning began in mid- to late-April, when mean daily water temperature at nesting depths was 14.4-15.0 Centigrade (58-59 Fahreheit), and continued until mid-June. Most spawning took place on the northeast shore of the bay. Sandstone rubble was the most commonly used bottom type for nesting, either at the base of ledges or around large sandstone boulders. Mean nest depth increased from 1.63 meter to 4.54 meters (5.36 feet to 14.90 feet) in …

The Effect Of Alternate Wetting And Drying On The Ammonium And Nitrite Nitrogen Transformation In Soils, Virupax C. Baligar May 1971

The Effect Of Alternate Wetting And Drying On The Ammonium And Nitrite Nitrogen Transformation In Soils, Virupax C. Baligar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Investigations were carried out to study the effect of alternate wetting and drying cycles on the mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification of soil nitrogen in two soils, in the presence or absence of added ammonium and nitrite. Soils were analyzed at the end of each drying cycle for total inorganic nitrogen, ammonium, and nitrite nitrogen. Gaseous products, i.e., ammonia, and the oxides of nitrogen (NO and NO2) were collected in the course of drying for determination.

The drying cycles accelerated the rate of nitrogen mineralization in both soils and further increased the oxidation of applied and available ammonium. The …

A Comparative Study Of Boron Adsorption By A Calcareous And An Acid Soil, Namik M. Ali Rashid May 1971

A Comparative Study Of Boron Adsorption By A Calcareous And An Acid Soil, Namik M. Ali Rashid

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The adsorption of boron by Aiken clay loam and Vernal sandy loam was studied in the boron equilibrium concentration range of 0 to 40 ppm. Adsorption data were obtained at 11, 20 and 30°C. The data were analyzed by the application of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. It was concluded that, in both soils, the adsorption of boron occurred on three distinct sites or regions.

The acid ferrigenous Aiken soil had a higher adsorption capacity for boron than the calcareous Vernal soil when compared on a unit mass basis. On the unit area basis, however, the Vernal soil adsorbed more boron …

Effect Of Time And Rate Of Application Of Nitrogen On The Yield Of The Mexican Wheat Under The Semi-Arid Conditions Of Tunisia, Habib M. Halila May 1971

Effect Of Time And Rate Of Application Of Nitrogen On The Yield Of The Mexican Wheat Under The Semi-Arid Conditions Of Tunisia, Habib M. Halila

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effect of the time and rate of application of nitrogen on the yield of high yielding varieties of wheat was studied under the semiarid conditions of Northern Tunisia.

Analysis of the experimental data showed that nitrogen increased the yield of wheat in most locations which were chosen for this experiment.

In high rainfall areas, late application of nitrogen (tillering, jointing stages) was more effective than early applications. The optimum yield was obtained by applying 90 kilograms of nitrogen per hectare.

In the medium to low rainfall area, early applications (seeding time) were more effective than the late ones. The …

Torus Knots, David S. Bradley May 1971

Torus Knots, David S. Bradley

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

We have compiled here many interesting results concerning a particular collection of knots called torus knots. Torus knots are merely simple closed curves imbedded in an unknotted torus T2 in E3. We show that the fundamental groups of T2, π(T2), is the direct product of the additive group of integers with itself. The ordered pair (p, q) in Z x Z determines an equivalence class of loops on the torus, and we show in Section II that the class [(p, q)] contains a loop whose image is a simple closed curve if and …

The Hogback Mountain area is located in the northern part of the Big Belt Mountains, twenty miles northeast of Helena, Montana.

Sedimentary rocks range in age from Precambrian to Recent, and have an aggregate thickness of about 16, 500 feet. The oldest stratified rocks are two conformable formations of the Precambrian Belt Series; the Newland Formation (oldest) and the Greyson Shale. These rocks have an aggregate thickness of about 10,700 feet.

Rocks of the Belt Series are unconformably overlain by about 1,200 feet of strata of Middle and Late Cambrian age separated into five conformable formation: the Flathead Sandstone (oldest), …

Fourier Transforms Of Unbounded Measures, Loren Argabright, Jesus De La Lamadrid May 1971

Fourier Transforms Of Unbounded Measures, Loren Argabright, Jesus De La Lamadrid

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Let G be a locally compact abelian group. For a (generally unbounded) measure μ on G we shall say that μ is transformable if there is a measure μˆ on the character group Γ of G such that, for every ƒЄK(G), the space of continuous functions with compact support on G,ƒЄL2(μ) and (1) ∫Gƒ**ƒ(x) dμ(x) = ∫r|∫(γ-1)|2dμ(γ). The resulting "Fourier transformation” μ→μˆ contains the classical theory and leads to generalizations of a variety of classical results, including the Plancherel theorem and the Poisson summation …

Eutrophication Of Small Lakes, Lynn T. Kenison May 1971

Eutrophication Of Small Lakes, Lynn T. Kenison

Theses and Dissertations

An estimate was made to determine the amount of nitrate and phosphate entering Utah Lake in 1968. To make this estimate, the flow data for 1968 and the nitrate and phosphate concentrations for 1970 were used. This was done because of the lack of information. The results show that the total nitrate added to Utah Lake in 1968 was 7,638,000 pounds. The total phosphate added was 1,740,200 pounds. Of this amount, 12,4 per cent of the nitrate and 18.0 per cent of the phosphate was released from the lake through the Jordan River. The rest remained in the lake to …

Integral Representation Theorems, Leiko Hatta May 1971

Integral Representation Theorems, Leiko Hatta

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since F. Riesz showed in 1909 that the dual of C[0,1] is BV[0,1] (the functions of bounded variation on [0, 1] with || g ||BV = V(g)) via the Stieltjes integral, obtaining representations for linear operators in various settings has been a problem of interest. This paper shows the historical manner of representations, the road map type theorems and representations obtained via the v-integral.

Fitting Some Families Of Contagious Distributions To Biological And Accident Data, Yung-Sung Lee May 1971

Fitting Some Families Of Contagious Distributions To Biological And Accident Data, Yung-Sung Lee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Four families of contagious distributions--generalized Poisson distributions, generalized binomial distributions, generalized Pascal distributions, and generalized log-zero distributions--are investigated in this thesis.

The family of generalized Poisson distributions contains five distributions: the Neyman Type A, the "Short," the Poisson binomial, the Poisson Pascal, and the negative binomial. The family of generalized binomial distributions contains eight distributions: the binomial Poisson, the binomial binomial, the binomial Pascal, the binomial log-zero, the Poisson with zeros, the binomial with zeros, the Pascal with zeros, and the log-zero with zeros. The family of generalized Pascal distributions contains four distributions: the Pascal Poisson, the Pascal binomial, the …

The Effectiveness Of Categorical Variables In Discriminant Function Analysis, Preston Jay Waite May 1971

The Effectiveness Of Categorical Variables In Discriminant Function Analysis, Preston Jay Waite

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A preliminary study of the feasibility of using categorical variables in discriminant function analysis was performed. Data including both continuous and categorical variables were used and predictive results examined.

The discriminant function techniques were found to be robust enough to include the use of categorical variables.

Some problems were encountered with using the trace criterion for selecting the most discriminating variables when these variables are categorical. No monotonic relationship was found to exist between the trace and the number of correct predictions.

This study did show that the use of categorical variables does have much potential as a statistical tool …

Role Of Transition Metals In Nitrite Decomposition In Soil, J. S. Bajwa May 1971

Role Of Transition Metals In Nitrite Decomposition In Soil, J. S. Bajwa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Iron and copper increased the decomposition of nitrite significantly during the first two hours of reaction when 150 parts per million (ppm) of nitrite and nitrogen was added to an acidic soil. Manganese was found to have a slight effect. There was no additional effect of the added metals after two hours reaction time.

The higher concentration of metals was not effective in catalyzing the decomposition of the added nitrite in nitrogen. All the added nitrite nitrogen was not recovered and the deficit could be due to the formation of nitrogen gas.

Calcium Carbonate Dissolution And Precipitation In Water: Factors Affecting The Carbonate Saturometer Method, Lyle M. Dabb May 1971

Calcium Carbonate Dissolution And Precipitation In Water: Factors Affecting The Carbonate Saturometer Method, Lyle M. Dabb

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The carbonate saturometer method developed by Weyl (1961) was studied in respect to the effect of several variables on the solubility of carbonates. The solubility of three solid carbonate materials was measured in four different salt solutions, at four ionic strengths, and at two different temperatures. The solids studied included: calcite, dolomite, and a calcareous soil.

It was found that the three solid carbonate materials varied in solubility from a low in the soil carbonates to a high in dolomite.

Increasing the ionic strength of the solution increased the solubility of most of the solid carbonate materials.

By decreasing the …

The Effect Of Early Spring Clipping And The Level Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On The Yield Of Improved Pastures, North Logan, Utah, Dechar Sumrit May 1971

The Effect Of Early Spring Clipping And The Level Of Nitrogen Fertilizer On The Yield Of Improved Pastures, North Logan, Utah, Dechar Sumrit

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The influence of agronomic practices on forage production and chemical composition of grass-legume pasture mixture was studied at the Utah State University Dairy Farm, North Logan, Utah, during spring and summer, 1970. The soil is a well-drained Millville silt loam that has about a 1 percent slope. It is high in potash, phosphorus, and lime, having a pH of 7.9.

Analysis of the clipping management showed that the early spring clipping decreased the yield of forage. The losses in total yield due to spring clipping were approximately four to five times the yields received in early spring clipping. The grasses …
