Master's Theses

Various unsymmetrically substituted 1 , 3-dipheny l -2- propylmethanesulfonates were prepared and complexed with chromium hexacarbonyl. The major products obtained from this complexation contained one rr -complexed ring and the other ring substituted with more common groups.

Spectroscopic Measurement Of The Electron Temperature In The Tenuous Argon Ion Laser Plasma, Dane Danijel Bicanic Apr 1971

Spectroscopic Measurement Of The Electron Temperature In The Tenuous Argon Ion Laser Plasma, Dane Danijel Bicanic

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The validity of the line intensity ratio technique for measuring the electron temperature was examined for an argon plasma with a "population inversion" i.e., the number of ions with electrons in the upper 4p levels was greater than in the lower 4s levels. The line intensities from these levels, the argon ion lasing transitions, were measured in a pulsed tenuous plasma at 110μ Hg produced by discharging a capacitor through a tube 2m long and 7mm inside diameter. The electron impact cross sections for simultaneous excitation and ionization as measured by Latimer and St. John were used and averaged over …

Physics

Measurements of the hyperfine interaction in Fe+ + in MnF2 in external fields above the spin‐flop field at 4.2 K are reported and a value of g⊥ = 2.13 is derived, in good agreement with theory.

Track Theory And Radiation Quality, Robert Katz Mar 1971

Track Theory And Radiation Quality, Robert Katz

Robert Katz Publications

Radiation detection and damage data from several physical, chemical, and biological systems have been analyzed by a unified track theory, in which observed effects are attributed to the interaction of secondary electrons with the medium. Gamma-ray dose-response curves are combined with calculations of the spatial dose distribution about an ion's path to yield dose-response curves (survival curves) for heavy ion bombardment, through appropriately defined parameters. Perplexing phenomena associated with high LET radiation are sorted out according to track regime (grain-count or track-width), inactivation mode (gamma-kill or ion-kill), structural complexity (elementary, cellular, multicellular), and end-point. The central problem in assigning a …

Mössbauer Effect In Fe-Doped Kmgf3, J. Chappert, J. R. Regnard, Richard B. Frankel, A. Misetich, N. A. Blum

Physics

An iron-doped KMgF3 single crystal has been studied with the Mössbauer technique. The two charge states, Fe2+ and Fe3+, are observed. Below 12 °K an Fe2+ quadrupole doublet appears. Using Ham strain model we calculate that the first excited spin-orbit level lies ~ 120 cm-1 above the Γ5g ground state.

Low-Lying Even-Parity Resonances In Ki:Ag+, Roger D. Kirby Mar 1971

Low-Lying Even-Parity Resonances In Ki:Ag+, Roger D. Kirby

Roger Kirby Publications

Lattice resonances of Eg symmetry (16.35 cm-1) and A1g symmetry (25 cm-1) have been found in KI:Ag+ using far-infrared spectroscopic techniques. The two even-parity modes are found to be anharmonically coupled to the T1u- symmetry resonant mode at 17.3 cm-1, giving rise to the combination bands observed at 30 and 44.4 cm-1.

Effects Of Season And Intensity Of Use On Desert Vegetation, C. Wayne Cook Mar 1971

Effects Of Season And Intensity Of Use On Desert Vegetation, C. Wayne Cook

UAES Bulletins

Desert ranges of the Great Basin area support about 9 million cattle and sheep for 5 to 6 months each winter. Many of these same ranges are used by cattle year-long.

If forage is not available on desert ranges, livestock have to be wintered on farmsteads or in feedlots after they are forced from the mountains and foothills by snow. Since feeding during the winter is expensive and reduces the economic efficiency of the range livestock operation, there is real advantage in properly managing the desert ranges and conserving the supply of forage for winter grazing.

Managing desert ranges for …

Relationship Of Ventilation Ability And Positioning In Left-Sided Congestive Heart Failure Patients, Nancy E. Carson Mar 1971

Relationship Of Ventilation Ability And Positioning In Left-Sided Congestive Heart Failure Patients, Nancy E. Carson

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Proper positioning is used to relieve dyspnea, edema, and fatigue in congestive heart failure patients. According to the review of literature, improved ventilation as measured by specific lung volumes and lung mechanics occurred with upright positioning in normal persons. The effects of specific changes in lung volumes related to position change in congestive heart failure patients has not been documented in literature, although various recommendations related to positioning are made. This exploratory study was undertaken with nine congestive heart failure patients to see if a relationship existed between degree of head elevation and lung ventilation ability as measured by water-bell …

Statistical Study Of Tongue Pigmentation In Man., Dabeeru Chandrasekhara Rao Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Tongue pigmentation in man:The 'partioular' type of dark apots and patohes on the surface of the tongue, as investigated in the prosent thesis, wae first not ioed in human populations by Davis [5], who called it 'tongue piementation'. It is to be emphasized that not all colour piements come under this 'particular' type. There are some pathological conditione giving rise to transient discolouration of the tongue. This aspeot will be disouesed a little later. Such tongue pigmentation does not seem to have been reported for any population, human or otherwise.Tongue pigmentation be usually found on the upper surface or borders …

Optimum Estimators And Strategies In Survey Sampling., M. K. Ramakrishnan Dr.

Doctoral Theses

This thesis consists of nine chapters. In the first chapter we give the basic concepts and definitions and also a broad review of the literature related to the problems considered in this thesis. The second and third chapters are devoted to a detailed modified comparison of sampling with and without replacement, for the case of equal and unequal probability sampling respectively. In the fourth and fifth chapters we discuss the criteria of hyper-admissibility and linear suf2iciency for the choice of an optimum estimator for a given sampling design. The succeeding three chapters have as their main objective the central problem …

Far-Infrared Properties Of Lattice Resonant Modes. V. Second-Order Stark Effect, B.P. Clayman, Roger D. Kirby, A. J. Sievers

Roger Kirby Publications

Small electric-field-induced frequency shifts have been observed for resonant modes associated with three defect systems. For NaI: Clˉ, the shifts have been used to measure the quartic anharmonic terms of the interionic potential of the impurity ion. For KBr: Li+, the quartic anharmonic terms are found to be very small, and an harmonic potential which includes a central barrier with the barrier height less than the zero-point energy of the oscillator is required to explain the experimental results. For NaCl: Cu+, only an "on-center" resonant-mode configuration is consistent with the experimental results.
