The Poincaré Conjecture, Joseph D. Peck May 1971

The Poincaré Conjecture, Joseph D. Peck

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The central theme for this paper is provided by the following three statements:

(1) Every compact connected 1-manifold is S1.

(2) Every compact connected simply connected 2-manifold is S2.

(3) Every compact connected simply connected 3-manifold is S3.

We provide proofs of statements (1) and (2). The veracity of the third statement, the Poincaré Conjecture, has not been determined. It is known that should a counter-example exist it can be found by removing from S3 a finite collect ion of solid tori and sewing them back differently. We show that it is not possible to find a counterexample by removing …

Telemetered Heart Rates Of Free-Living Uinta Ground Squirrels In Response To Social Interactions, Robert L. Ruff May 1971

Telemetered Heart Rates Of Free-Living Uinta Ground Squirrels In Response To Social Interactions, Robert L. Ruff

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Free-living Uinta ground squirrels (Spermophilus armatus) were instrumented with miniaturized ECG radio-transmitters to measure their short-term and long-term heart rate responses to social interactions. A continuous trapping and direct observation program prior to and during the study provided complete behavioral and life history information for virtually all ground squirrels on the 22-acre study area.

Three broad categories of heart rate information were obtained: responses by squirrels (1) in their burrows, (2) above ground during social interactions, and (3) above ground when animals were not fighting and when conspecifics were both absent and present.

Marked changes in the heart …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Studies :|Bi. Several Charge Transfer Systems ; Ii. A Metallic System ; Iii. A Liquid Crystal, Dee Edward Oyler

Theses and Dissertations

Solid-liquid phase equilibria studies were used to investigate possible compound formation in solutions of (i) N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and (ii) N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) with a series of halogenated hydrocarbons that were selected to give a wide range of acceptor properties. Solid 1:1 intermolecular compounds were identified from solutions of (i) DMF and (ii) DMA with CCl_4, CBrCl_3, and C_6H_5CCl_3. The intermolecular compounds (DMF)_2•CCl_4 and (DMF)_2•CBrCl_3 were also found. The results suggest charge transfer from DMF or DMA to the chlorine atoms of the acceptor molecule as the process for compound formation. Thermal methods were used to determine with high precision the solid-liquid …

Theses and Dissertations

The complexation properties of the two isomers of the cyclic polyether dicyclohexyl-18-crown-6 are examined in aqueous solution for a series of metal ions at various reaction temperatures. The results are discussed in terms of size relationships and salvation characteristics of both polyether and metal ions. ΔCp° values are determined from the temperature dependence of the ΔH° values. A discussion of the errors involved in the determination of ΔH° from the temperature dependence of log K values is also included. Comparisons are made between the results of this study and those of a similar study by H. K. Frensdorff, E. I. …

The Roles Of Chlorine Azide In Chemical Lasers, Walter Wood Rice May 1971

The Roles Of Chlorine Azide In Chemical Lasers, Walter Wood Rice

Theses and Dissertations

ClN_3 was photolyzed in various gas mixtures to transform its chemical energy into laser radiation. Reaction mechanisms, energy distribution in reaction products, and relative reaction rates were deduced from the laser emission. Flash photolysis of ClN_3-H_2 mixtures produced HCl laser emission; however, due to a narrow range of operating conditions and many competing reactions, the laser output was less than that obtained from comparable Cl_2-H_2 mixtures. The rate constants for H + ClN_3 —> HCl* (v=n) + N_3 were determined to be 0.45 ± 0.05 of the corresponding rate constants for H + Cl_2 —> HCl* (v=n) + Cl. Chlorine …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Of The Potassium-Rubidium And Rubidium-Cesium Alloy Systems, Elisabeth M. Delawarde May 1971

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Of The Potassium-Rubidium And Rubidium-Cesium Alloy Systems, Elisabeth M. Delawarde

Theses and Dissertations

Thermal methods of high precision were used to determine the solid-liquid phase equilibria diagrams for the potassium-rubidium and the rubidium-cesium systems. Both form minima in the liquidus curves occurring at 307.00° K with 0.667 mole fraction rubidium in the potassium-rubidium system and 282.85° K with 0.530 mole fraction cesium in the rubidium-cesium system. In the potassium-rubidium system, the liquidus and solidus points are very close together, giving a very narrow temperature range for the two phase region. The freezing point minimum in the potassium-rubidium system occurs at 0.667 mole fraction rubidium, suggesting the possible formation of a KRb2 intermetallic compound.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to find out whether patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (C.O.P.D.) learn more from auditory or from visual teaching. Of the 30 patients in the sample, 10 used a programmed instruction booklet, 10 used a taped recording of the same programmed material and 10 were in a control group which received no specific teaching.

A pre-test was given to each of the patients who met the criteria for the study. One researcher gave the pre-test through an oral interview with the patient. After the pre-test, the patient received the teaching device assigned to him …

The Effects Of A Topically Applied Anti-Inflammatory Agent On Root Resorption In The Replanted Teeth Of Canines, William L. Young May 1971

The Effects Of A Topically Applied Anti-Inflammatory Agent On Root Resorption In The Replanted Teeth Of Canines, William L. Young

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Root resorption is a constant finding on the roots of replanted teeth. In this study it was suggested that root resorption is perhaps related to inflammation and that teeth incubated in an anti-inflammatory agent such as triamcinolone acetonide, a corticosteroid, before replantation would have less resorption. To investigate this hypothesis nineteen mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were extracted and replanted. Ten of the teeth were incubated for five minutes in the steroid and nine control teeth for the same period in a saline solution. Before euthanizing the animals at one, three, five, and seven weeks, a clinical evaluation of …

The Effect Of Early Postpartum Teaching Of Infant Feeding On Maternal Concern, Linda M. Richter, K. Judy Toews

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An experimental study was conducted on thirty primiparae during the postpartum period to determine if individualized instruction regarding infant feeding would result in a lower level of maternal concern in this area. The study sample was randomly and evenly divided into a control and an experimental group. It was statistically determined that the two groups were homogeneous in regard to age, education, occupation, previous information (prenatal classes and reading) and help at home. The experimental group received individualized instruction by the researchers concerning their chosen method of infant feeding on the second postpartum day. There was no instruction given the …

Using A Participating Relationship To Improve Teen-Age Unwed Mother's Self-Esteem, Linda Gail Reeves May 1971

Using A Participating Relationship To Improve Teen-Age Unwed Mother's Self-Esteem, Linda Gail Reeves

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The study was to provide an approach to help teen-age unwed mothers increase their feelings of self-esteem and thereby attain a conceptual buffer for better coping with life. Self-esteem was defined as individual perception of the worth of oneself relative to that of significant others. The hypothesis tested was that the participating relationship a community health nurse has with a teen-age unwed mother will significantly increase the mother's self-esteem as measured by statistical Q-Sort analysis.

A convenience sample of twenty teen-age unwed mothers was obtained from referrals from San Bernardino County Health, Welfare, and Probation Departments. The girls were between …

A Computerized Study Of Midpalatal Suture Expansion, Clelan G. Ehrler May 1971

A Computerized Study Of Midpalatal Suture Expansion, Clelan G. Ehrler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

An investigation has been conducted to consider the effects of midpalatal suture expansion on the cranial-facial complex. Nine patients were treated that had constricted maxillae. Data was obtained from frontal and lateral headplate radiographs which were taken at four intervals during treatment. The Rocky Mountain Data Systems diagnosis was utilized to interpret the radiographic data.

The data from the nine cases were averaged to obtain a composit [sic] change at each of the four times.

Examination of the lateral headplate data revealed that no permanent significant alteration occurred to the positions of the mandible or maxilla in a vertical or …

Linear Pulsation Analysis Of Cluster Cepheid Variables, Charles E. Needham Apr 1971

Linear Pulsation Analysis Of Cluster Cepheid Variables, Charles E. Needham

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Models for thirteen classical Cepheids found in galactic clusters or associations are analyzed. The models are calculated using the most recently published photometric data and theoretical evolutionary tracks. The linearized equations of mass, momentum and energy conservation are solved subject to an infinitesimal radial perturbation of each equilibrium model. The equations are first solved in the adiabatic approximation. This solution is then used as the initial value for the iterative solution of the non-adiabatic equations. The linearized analysis provides information on pulsation periods of fundamental and harmonic modes, stability against pulsations and phase differences between various physical parameters, such as …

The Open Ocean Hydrofoil Ship: Will It Come Of Age?, Stephen W. Mcganka Apr 1971

The Open Ocean Hydrofoil Ship: Will It Come Of Age?, Stephen W. Mcganka

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Problems encountered during development of the hydrofoil ship have restricted exploitation of its unique characteristics in an open ocean environment. An examination of pertinent physical and technical constraints is undertaken to assess their impact upon the future. The focus of this examination is centered upon the evolution of the fully submerged foil type ship during the past decade with emphasis upon the commitment directed toward its development by the United States Government. The developmental process induced by this commitment is found to be impeded by physical and technical factors, but organizational and traditional constraints are also instrumental in retarding progress. …

Ion‐Pair Theory Of Concentrated Electrolytes. Iii. Variational Principle, Frank Stillinger, Ronald White Apr 1971

Ion‐Pair Theory Of Concentrated Electrolytes. Iii. Variational Principle, Frank Stillinger, Ronald White

Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP)

Two major contributions are devised for that theory of concentrated electrolytes which by convention regards the ions as completely paired into uncharged dipolar “molecules.” First, a more satisfactory expression is obtained for the wavelength‐dependent static dielectric “constant” ε(k). Second, a variational principle for Helmholtz free energy F is displayed whose minimization with respect to the ion‐pair size distribution p(1) serves to determine both F and p(1). In anticipation of future numerical applications, a binary collision approximation is specified for the short‐range interaction aspect of the functional F[p(1)].

Ion‐Pair Theory Of Concentrated Electrolytes. Iv. Ion Atmosphere Charge Distribution, Frank Stillinger, Ronald White Apr 1971

Ion‐Pair Theory Of Concentrated Electrolytes. Iv. Ion Atmosphere Charge Distribution, Frank Stillinger, Ronald White

Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP)

Arguments are presented indicating that the large‐size limiting behavior of the ion‐pair size distribution is qualitatively the same both with, and without, Coulomb interactions between ions. This in turn implies that the static dielectric response function ε0 / ε(k) derived in the preceding paper is nonanalytic at k = 0. The specific singular behavior of this response requires a branch cut along the imaginary k axis. It furthermore induces an r−8 tail in the ion atmosphere charge distribution at finite electrolyte concentration.

The Role Of Compulsory Sealanes In Resolving Multiple-Use Conflict On The Continental Shelf, Alfred P. Manning Apr 1971

The Role Of Compulsory Sealanes In Resolving Multiple-Use Conflict On The Continental Shelf, Alfred P. Manning

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

An analysis of the nature of multiple-use conflict on the continental shelf developed with particular emphasis on the involvement of ocean transportation and offshore oil recovery. The wide-ranging effects which offshore marine accidents may have on coastal residents is discussed. Trends indicate a growth in the level of conflict stemming from competition between those wishing to use the same ocean space for the same purpose, the same ocean space for different purposes, and different but related ocean space for incompatible purposes. Ocean transportation is identified as the single common element in all three conflict categories. Restriction on traditional concepts of …

The United States Navy And An International Seabed Regime (U), Theodore E. Newark Apr 1971

The United States Navy And An International Seabed Regime (U), Theodore E. Newark

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The paper proposes to briefly outline the Navy's general role as one element of this nation's overall seapower. The expanding sources of conflicting interest in uses of the sea are examined along with the barely visible form which debates are presently giving toward the creation of an international regime for the peaceful exploration and exploitation of the natural resources of the seabed and its subsoil, located beyond the limits of national jurisdiction. Naval adjustment to the requirements expected to derive from new aspects of the evolving changes to present law of the sea are analyzed and recommendations are drawn in …

Oceanic Disposal Of Radioactive Wastes: Effects And Proposals, Billy M. Ervin Apr 1971

Oceanic Disposal Of Radioactive Wastes: Effects And Proposals, Billy M. Ervin

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

An investigation of the effects of radioactive waste disposal into the oceans pursued by an examination of the hazards involved, the present sources of radioactive wastes and future prospects. The longevity of many radioactive elements, coupled with the awesome consequences to which even a slight miscalculation may lead, are convincing arguments for the most conservative approach to the problem of disposal of radioactive wastes. Present day disposal of radioactive wastes in the oceans, while significant, have not yet had major discernible effects on man or marine life. However, with the worldwide explosion of electrical power demand and the increasing use …

A Functional Analysis Of The Naval Weather Service System, Charles P. Pfarrer Jr. Apr 1971

A Functional Analysis Of The Naval Weather Service System, Charles P. Pfarrer Jr.

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the Naval Weather Service system by defining its functions; for the available literature does not convey the concept of interacting elements contributing to the operation of the larger whole. This paper concentrates on articulating the contributions of the related actions to the Naval Weather Service system. The aim is for clarity of exposition. The purpose is to get across the big picture. Int introspective format ensues formally from the rational foundations of the conceptual mode of inquiry. This paper addresses the Naval Weather Service system and not the scientific and technological process …

Management Of Natural Lakes In The Northern Great Plains, D. B. Mccarraher Apr 1971

Management Of Natural Lakes In The Northern Great Plains, D. B. Mccarraher

Nebraska Game and Parks Commission: White Papers, Conference Presentations, and Manuscripts

Approximately 2,800 natural lakes smaller than 10 acres in size are found in the northern plains region of Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota. Water quality characteristics vary greatly among lakes in close geographical proximity. They range from fresh to highly mineralized bicarbonate-carbonate-hydroxide (alkaline) to chloro-sulfate (saline) types and regionally represent the largest concentration of inland mineral waters in North America. Water quality together with shallow basin morphometry exert major environmental influences on the fisheries in great plains natural lakes.

In the sandhills region of Nebraska (20,000 sq. mi.) only about 45% of the estimated 1,400 natural lakes support fish …

Guidebook To The Late Pliocene And Early Pleistocene Of Nebraska, T. M. Stout, H. M. Degraw, L. G. Tanner, K. O. Stanley, William J. Wayne, J. B. Swinehart

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The interesting geographic and even strategic position of Nebraska between regions of mountain and interior glaciation during the Quaternary was emphasized by A. L. Lugn, Professor Emeritus of Geology at the University of Nebraska, more than thirty years ago. The earlier studies are summarized in two principal works by Lugn (1935; 1939a; see Selected References), to whom this guidebook is dedicated, much has been learned since and much remains to be recorded concerning the Tertiary and Pleistocene of Nebraska. In this centennial year, commemorating the beginning of a second century of geological instruction at the University of Nebraska, it seems …
