Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The classification of Riemann surfaces with respect to the equation Δu = Pu (P^O, PΞ£ 0) was initiated by Ozawa [13] and further developed by L. Myrberg [8,9], Royden [14], Nakai [10,11], Sario-Nakai [15], Nakai-Sario [12], Glasner-Katz [3], and Kwon-Sario [7].

Bayesian Confidence Limits For The Reliability Of Mixed Exponential And Distribution-Free Cascade Subsystems, Melvin D. Springer, James K. Byers Jan 1971

Bayesian Confidence Limits For The Reliability Of Mixed Exponential And Distribution-Free Cascade Subsystems, Melvin D. Springer, James K. Byers

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem treated here is the theoretical one of deriving exact Bayesian confidence intervals for the reliability of a system consisting of some independent cascade subsystems with exponential failure probability density functions (pdf) mixed with other independent cascade subsystems whose failure pdf's are unknown. The Mellin integral transform is used to derive the posterior pdf of the system reliability. The posterior cumulative distribution function (cdf) is then obtained in the usual manner by integrating the pdf, which serves the dual purpose of yielding system reliability confidence limits while at the same time providing a check on the derived pdf. A …

Magnetic Behavior Of Rare-Earth Iron-Rich Intermetallic Compounds, Dominique Givord, Remy Lemaire, William Joseph James, Jean Michel Moreau, Jayant S. Shah Jan 1971

Magnetic Behavior Of Rare-Earth Iron-Rich Intermetallic Compounds, Dominique Givord, Remy Lemaire, William Joseph James, Jean Michel Moreau, Jayant S. Shah

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The thermal variation of lattice parameters of rare earth-transition metal intermetallic compounds rich in Fe, Co, or Ni in the temperature range of 25-900oK is studied. For the Fe compounds, negative thermal expansion is observed below their magnetic ordering temperatures regardless of the nature of substitutional ordering. For Co and Ni compounds, the thermal expansion behavior is normal. It is then concluded that for the Fe compounds, the magnetic properties are mainly determined by the Fe-Fe interatomic distances and the number of Fe nearest neighbors, whereas for Co and Ni compounds the magnetic properties are determined by the conduction electron …

"This dissertation consists of four sections. The first part is a temperature dependent X-ray study of the lattice parameters of BiFeo₃. The synthesis and subsequent X-ray characterization of BiCo₃, BiAlO₃, BiMnO₃ , BiScO₃, BiCo₁₋ₓFeₓO₃ , and BiAl₁₋ₓFeₓO₃ are reported in the second part. These compounds all crystallize in the body centered cubic (BCC) structure with a~10.2Å. Single crystal Precession and Weissenberg photographs confirmed the BCC structure. In part three, the results of the magnetic studies on BiCoO₃ and biAl.₉FE.₁ are presented. The magnetic data for BiCoO₃ are substantiated by X-ray thermal expansion studies. In the last part the compound BiCo.₉FE.₁O₃ …

Some Metal Complexes Of Dihydroxycyclobutenedione, Stewart Michael Condren Jan 1971

Some Metal Complexes Of Dihydroxycyclobutenedione, Stewart Michael Condren

Doctoral Dissertations

"This study involves an investigation of some of the physical and chemical properties of the trivalent metal squarate complexes of iron, vanadium, and indium in order to determine their structure. In this investigation studies were made of the infrared spectra, electronic spectra, x-ray diffraction powder photographs and diffractometer patterns, magnetic susceptibilities, and thermogravimetric patterns for the trihydrate, dihydrate, and anhydrous squarate complexes of vanadium(III) and iron (III) and the dihydrate squarate complex of indium(III). These studies suggest that the structures of the vanadium(III) and iron(III) squarate complexes are dimeric with hydroxyl bridges between the metal atoms. This is supported by …

Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Values Of Cross Sections For Electron Production By Proton Impact, M. Eugene Rudd, D. Gregoire, J. B. Crooks Jan 1971

Comparison Of Experimental And Theoretical Values Of Cross Sections For Electron Production By Proton Impact, M. Eugene Rudd, D. Gregoire, J. B. Crooks

M. Eugene Rudd Publications

Angle and energy distributions of electrons ejected from single- and multishell atoms by 50-to 300-keV protons are compared with various theoretical treatments. Partial cross sections for each subshell are calculated by scaling according to the number of electrons and the binding energy and then are added. The Born approximation fails at large and at small angles but yields fair agreement at intermediate angles. The treatments of Salin and of Macek, which take account of the influence of the projectile after the collision, yield much improved agreement at small angles. The binary-encounter model is used to calculate cross sections which are …

Groundwater Flow In A Sandy Tidal Beach 1. One-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis, W. Harrison, C. S. Fang, S. N. Wang Jan 1971

Groundwater Flow In A Sandy Tidal Beach 1. One-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis, W. Harrison, C. S. Fang, S. N. Wang

VIMS Articles

A 31-day time series of observations of beach water table and tidal fluctuations was obtained from 13 wells along a profile perpendicular to the shoreline at Virginia Beach, Virginia. Finite element techniques were applied to solve the one-dimensional, unsteady state, nonlinear equation for groundwater movement. For the finite element analysis, the semi-infinite mass (unconfined aquifer) had to be replaced by a finite mass. The boundary conditions were found from the field data by directly solving the flow equation with a finite difference technique. The finite element method, using the variational principle, provided a reasonable solution and afforded economy in computer …

Vertical Distribution Of Estuarine Phytoplankton In The Surface Microlayer And At One Meter, And Fluctuations In Abundance Caused By Surface Adsorption Of Monomolecular Films, Victoria R. Gibson Jan 1971

Vertical Distribution Of Estuarine Phytoplankton In The Surface Microlayer And At One Meter, And Fluctuations In Abundance Caused By Surface Adsorption Of Monomolecular Films, Victoria R. Gibson

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A quantitative comparison of the phytoplankton in the surface microlayer of an estuary and that a depth of one meter was made using a Garrett-type screen and a Frautschy bottle for sample collection. Results showed that the surface microlayer contained a significantly greater number of phytoplankton cells than the water at one meter. Species diversity at the surface tended to be somewhat lower than one meter, due to a greater number of individuals of the dominant species. Investigation revealed that the presence of a monomolecular film of slick material absorbed onto the water surface resulted in a decrease in the …

The Generation Of Flood Damage Time Sequences, John P. Breaden Jan 1971

The Generation Of Flood Damage Time Sequences, John P. Breaden

KWRRI Research Reports

There is a need in water resources planning to develop a procedure for determining the time pattern in which flood damages occur as a function of the rise and fall of the flood hydrograph. The widely-used approach for estimation of flood damages does not take into account the fact that the frequency of the annual flood peak may not be the same as the frequency of the total annual flood damages. As examples, several small storms during the year may do more damage than a single larger storm, or flood damages may be reduced by a reduction in flood duration …

Studies Of The Cleavages And Stabilities Of Carbohydrate Epoxides And Epimines, Curtis Alvin Johnson Jan 1971

Studies Of The Cleavages And Stabilities Of Carbohydrate Epoxides And Epimines, Curtis Alvin Johnson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A novel epoxide ring opening of benzyl 3,4-anhydro-2-benzylox-carbonylamido-2-deoxy-β-D-allopyranoside(I) was affected by phenylboronic anhydride in toluene. One of the products was demonstrated to be benzyl 2-benzyloxycarbonylamido-2-deoxy-4,6-0-phenylboronate-β-D-gulopyranoside. Another product isolated, while not identified, had the properties of an anhydro-sugar different from the starting compound(I). Benzyl 6-0-acetyl-2-benzyloxycarbonylamido-2-deoxy-β-D-allopyranoside(II) also underwent epoxide ring opening in a reaction with phenylboronic acid. An isolated product had the properties of a benzyl 2-benzyloxycarbonyiamido-2-deoxy-D-hexoside different from compounds isolate in the reaction of I with the phenyboronate. This indicated the necessity for an unsubstituted 6-OH group in order for the boron compound to be involved in the ring opening. Supporting …

The Petroleum Geology Of The Midale Subinterval In North Central North Dakota, Kent A. Johnson Jan 1971

The Petroleum Geology Of The Midale Subinterval In North Central North Dakota, Kent A. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippian Midale subinterval is the basal unit of the Ratcliffe interval of the Madison Group. The Midale subinterval, an important petroleum producing unit in North Dakota, is a dolomitized limestone which is approximately 40 feet thick. A detailed study of 17 oil fields in north central North Dakota was conducted to determine the petroleum geology of the Midale subinterval. The study was done with the use of 563 mechanical well logs and core samples from 10 wells.

The anhydrite and dolomite units of the Rival subinterval, which underlie the Midale, and the Ratcliffe interval, which over lies the Midale, …

Collision Cross Sections For The Excitation Of The Schumann-Runge Dissociation Continuum In Molecular Oxygen By 20-110-Kev Protons, John T. Park, F. D. Schowengerdt, D. R. Schoonover Jan 1971

Collision Cross Sections For The Excitation Of The Schumann-Runge Dissociation Continuum In Molecular Oxygen By 20-110-Kev Protons, John T. Park, F. D. Schowengerdt, D. R. Schoonover

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Absolute cross sections for the excitation of the Schumann-Runge dissociation continuum of molecular oxygen have been obtained from inelastic energy-loss spectra induced by 20-110-keV protons incident on gaseous targets of molecular oxygen. Apparent differential energy loss cross sections, ionization cross sections, and total inelastic cross sections are also obtained from the energy-loss spectra. The proton energy-loss spectra have an energy resolution of about 2 eV. The energy location of the first peak in the energy-loss spectra of O2 is in general agreement with the findings of photo absorption and electron energy-loss-spectra measurements. The cross section for the Schumann-Runge dissociation continuum …

Fossil Stromgren Spheres From Supernova Explosions, Menas Kafatos, P. Morrison Jan 1971

Fossil Stromgren Spheres From Supernova Explosions, Menas Kafatos, P. Morrison

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Brandt ci at. have shown that consistency in the combined observations of the Gum Nebula requires a giant H ii region, presumably formed by the Vela X supernova explosion. Mouison and Sartori had concluded on the basis of their He ii fluorescence theory of Type I supernovae that a giant H ii region would be formed as result of the ultraviolet burst. (Bottcher ci at., by integrating over the light curve, expect a smaller H ii region.) We present here in brief some consequences of the fluorescence model as illustrated by the Vela X and the Tycho supernovae. We conclude …

Consideration Of Macro-Climatic And Macro-Biotic Change In The Ozark Highlands During Post-Glacial Times, Kenneth W. Cole Jan 1971

Consideration Of Macro-Climatic And Macro-Biotic Change In The Ozark Highlands During Post-Glacial Times, Kenneth W. Cole

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Climatological, pedological and faunal investigations conducted in the Upper Midwest and the Ozark Highlands indicate that the environment to which man in the Ozarks was adapting over the past 12,000 years has undergone several major shifts, beginning with a cool-moist boreal forest situation followed by a period of warming and aridness resulting in prairie and deciduous forest climaxes and subsequently, in the last 4000-5000 years, change to the pattern reflected by present conditions.

Group Sequential Methods For Clinical Trials Applied To The Logistic Regression Model, Joy Duci Mele Jan 1971

Group Sequential Methods For Clinical Trials Applied To The Logistic Regression Model, Joy Duci Mele

Theses and Dissertations

The objectives of this thesis are

1. to provide a comprehensive guide to using Pocock's group sequential method for clinical trials and

2. to show by computer simulations that the group sequential method is appropriate when using the logistic regression model.

In section 1.2, clinical trials are defined with an emphasis on Phase III clinical trials. The primary intent of sections 1.2 and 1.3 is to describe clinical trial characteristics which suggest that interim analyses are desirable. In section 1.4, it is shown that interim analyses should not consist of performing the usual significance tests. Chapter 1, then, describes the …

High-Pressure Phase Studies On Sodium–Potassium Alloys, D. Ray Anderson, J. Bevan Ott, Rex J. Goates, H. Tracy Hall Jan 1971

High-Pressure Phase Studies On Sodium–Potassium Alloys, D. Ray Anderson, J. Bevan Ott, Rex J. Goates, H. Tracy Hall

Faculty Publications

The solid–liquid phase diagrams were investigated to 60 kbar for elemental sodium, potassium, and various sodium–potassium alloys. The data for Na and K are in general agreement with those of earlier workers. In the alloy system the temperatures of both the peritectic and eutectic halts increase as the pressure increases, but with different slopes, so that the two invariant points merge at approximately 35 kbar. Above this pressure, two halts are again observed. One increases with increasing pressure, and the other decreases with increasing pressure up to 55 kbar, where it abruptly starts increasing again. Melting points for samples in …
