We define an n-type (1, -1) matrix N = 1 + R of order n ~ 2 (mod 4) to have R symmetric and R2 = (n - 1)/n. These matrices are analogous to skewtype matrices M = 1 + W which have W skew-symmetric.

Amicable Hadamard Matrices, Jennifer Seberry
Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)
If X is a symmetric Hadamard matrix, Y is a skew-Hadamard matrix, and XYT is symmetric, then X and Y are said to be amicable Hadamard matrices. A construction for amicable Hadamard matrices is given, and then amicable Hadamard matrices are used to generalize a construction for skew-Hadamard matrices.

Special Collections Archived Publications
Humboldt Bay is a coastal lagoon, 14 mi. long and a maximum of 4 mi. wide. The bay has three distinct segments, South, Entrance, and Arcata Bays, each of which occupies the seaward end of one or more stream valleys cut into Plio- Pleistocene paralic sediments. The segments are linked by narrow tidal channels which are bounded by a barrier spit on the west and by high valley interfluves on the east. Climate of the area is rainy temperate . Tides are of the mixed type with a mean range of 6.5 ft.

Geophysical And Geological Analysis Of A Fault-Like Linearity In The Lower Clackamas River Area, Clackamas County, Oregon, Ronald Jay Schmela
Geophysical And Geological Analysis Of A Fault-Like Linearity In The Lower Clackamas River Area, Clackamas County, Oregon, Ronald Jay Schmela
Dissertations and Theses
A fault-like linearity along the lower Clackamas River is evaluated by analysis of physiographic and structural alignments, geological relationships, and by gravity and magnetic data. The study has resulted in the verification of a structural feature extending along the Clackamas River and the eastern front of the Portland Hills. Physiographic alignments were examined in twelve 15 minute and two 7-1/2 minute quadrangle maps. A significant northeasterly morphologic trend, N. 20⁰ W. and N. 40° W., and other secondary trends, namely, the N-S, E-W, and N. 50-60° E., has developed in the Portland area. The consistent northwest trend is observed throughout …

Thermal Expansivity And Refractive Index Determinations For Some Hydrosol Systems And Their Similarity To Properties Ascribed To "Anomalous" Water, Gerald Wayne Chappue
Thermal Expansivity And Refractive Index Determinations For Some Hydrosol Systems And Their Similarity To Properties Ascribed To "Anomalous" Water, Gerald Wayne Chappue
Masters Theses
"The characteristic thermal expansion and refractive index of aqueous dispersions of SiO₂ and NaOH were determined for samples contained in quartz micro-capillaries. Comparison is made with the expansivity and refractive properties of anomalous water or polywater as reported by other investigators. The similarity between the properties and behavior of various hydrosol systems and those ascribed to anomalous water is cited as a serious challenge to the hypothesized existence of an allotropic modification of water"--Abstract, page ii.
Calculation Of Anisotropic Hyperfine Constants For Lattice Nuclei Near A Shallow Donor, Edward B. (Boyd) Hale, Robert Lee Mieher
Calculation Of Anisotropic Hyperfine Constants For Lattice Nuclei Near A Shallow Donor, Edward B. (Boyd) Hale, Robert Lee Mieher
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
A method is presented for calculating the magnetic anisotropic (dipolar) hyperfine constants for lattice nuclei near a shallow-donor impurity. The method assumes that the wave function of the donor electron can be expressed in an effective-mass form, i.e., a slowly varying envelope function times conduction-band Bloch functions. For each dipolar hyperfine constant, two separate calculations are performed. One calculation is for a local region about the lattice nucleus of interest. The greatest part of the interaction occurs in this region (about 85 ± 10%). The second calculation is for the more distant region. The dipolar constants in the distant region …

Excitation Of The 2s State Of Atomic Hydrogen By Electron Impact In The Distorted-Wave Approximation - Angular Distributions, W. Neil Shelton, E. S. Leherissey, Don H. Madison
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The excitation of ground-state hydrogen atoms to the 2s state by the impact of electrons with energies of 1 to 50 Ry (13.6 to 680.3 eV) has been calculated in the distorted-wave approximation with exchange included. The angular distributions of the scattered electrons at 1 and 4 Ry are compared with those derived from the close-coupling calculations by Burke, Schey, and Smith, and are compared with four different plane-wave theories at all energies calculated. Taking the close-coupling results as a standard, it is found that the distorted-wave angular distributions represent an improvement over those of the plane-wave theories.

The problem of global optimization of M incoherent phase signals in N complex dimensions is formulated. Then, by using the geometric approach of Landau and Slepian, conditions for optimality are established for $N = 2$, and the optimal signal sets are determined for $M = 2,3,4,6$ and 12.
The method is the following: The signals are assumed to be equally probable and to have equal energy, and thus are represented by points ${\bf s}_j $, $j = 1,2, \cdots ,M$, on the unit sphere $S_1 $ in $C^N $. If $W_{jk} $ is the half space determined by ${\bf s}_j …

New Varieties Could Extend The Peach Canning Season, S R J Newton
New Varieties Could Extend The Peach Canning Season, S R J Newton
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
THE peach canning industry in Western Australia at present has only a limited period of operation, coinciding with the harvest time of the major variety, Golden Queen.
New canning peach varieties tested at Stoneville Research Station could be used to extend the harvest period of canning peaches beyond that of the present standard variety, Golden Queen.
This would have obvious advantages for growers and a canning industry.
The South African variety Keimoes was the most promising canning peach tested. Tests on other varieties are continuing.

Angular And Energy Distribution Of Cross Sections For Electron Production By 50-300-Kev-Proton Impacts On N2, O2, Ne, And Ar, J. B. Crooks, M. Eugene Rudd
M. Eugene Rudd Publications
Cross sections differential in angle and ejection energy for electron production by proton impact on nitrogen, oxygen, neon, and argon have been measured using electrostatic analysis and counting of individual electrons. The range of proton energies was 50-300 keV, the angles ranged from 10° to 160°, and the electron energies were measured from 1.5 to 1057 eV. Integrations over angle and/or electron energy yielded singly differential and total electron production cross sections. Our total cross sections for oxygen fall halfway between previous data of deHeer et al. and Hooper et al., but our argon cross sections agree better with deHeer …
Movements And Habitat Use By Hen Pheasants During Brood Rearing, Lynn E. Hanson
Movements And Habitat Use By Hen Pheasants During Brood Rearing, Lynn E. Hanson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Land-use patterns characteristic of prime pheasant range in the Great Plains and prairie region have 50-75 percent of the land under cultivation according to Kimball et. al. (1956). Farmland is pheasant habitat, and the production of pheasants is therefore greatly influenced by farming practices. Considerable research has been done on rates of pheasant production, nest success, and cover preferences for nesting. However, little information has been obtained on movements and cover preferences for brood rearing. Most studies of the type of cover utilized by pheasant broods have been based on roadside and random field observations. Kozicky and Hendrickson (1951) carried …

Interpretive Potential Of South Dakota Wetlands, Douglas C. Harr
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A study was initiated to devise a method for selecting prairie wetlands on which nature interpretation areas could be established. An evaluation form was designed to systematically identify areas of good potential and 64 prairie wetlands were evaluated. Twenty-two percent of the evaluated marshes were found to rank “excellent”: the method of evaluation was determined successful. A survey was initiated to determine visitor preferences for interpretive methods and facilities at an existing wildlife-interpretive trail. Seventy-nine percent of the visitors indicated preference for a self-guiding interpretive trail. Maps and pictures used in conjunction with self-guiding signs were deemed important. Ninety-one percent …

Durées De La Mue, De L'Intermue Des Adultes, Et Longévité De Stenasellus Virei Dollfus (Crustacé Asellote Troglobie), Guy Magniez
International Journal of Speleology
The author’s observations of numerous cases of molting in the hypogean asellid Stenasellus virei Dollfus, 1897 appear to show that the phenomenon occurs in two steps. The loss of the anterior exuvium is separated from that of the posterior exuvium by a period of 8 to 16 days in adults from cavernicolous populations of Stenasellus virei in the Pyrenees and Cantabrian Alps. The intermolts last from 9 to 18 months for the same individuals. One must allow, for this species, a minimun life span of 10 years. Values of the same order of magnitude are anticipated for the two other …

The quadrupole coupling of B-12 implanted in Be-9 has been observed using a single crystal of Be. One sees a narrow resonance line, the location of which depends in the normal way on the orientation of the crystalline c-axis with respect to the external magnetic field direction. The coupling constant is given by e2qQ/h = 54.9(6) kHz. This is consistent with our previous measurement using a Be foil. Using the field gradient at Be-9 lattice sites, calculated by Pomerantz and Das, one finds Q(B-12) = about 34.6 mb.

Polarized 8Li nuclei have been produced through the 7Li(d,p) reaction using the 3.5-MeV Van de Graaff accelerator at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The observed polarization was a slowly-varying function of deuteron energy over the range 1.3-2.9 MeV, reaching a maximum of about +1.6%. The recoiling nuclei were stopped in Au, Pt and Pd foils and the effective dipole moments were measured by a resonant depolarization method. The results were 1.65362(22)µN, 1.65288(20)µN and 1.65270(30)µN respectively. These are consistent with the work of Connor, who found µ(8Li) =1.6530(8)µN in a LiF crystal. An upper limit for the 8Li quadrupole moment will also be …

A study of different solvent systems for the atomic absorption determination of cobalt revealed that acetone results in best sensitivity. Acetone is the solvent of choice for the sensitive measurement of several metals. Hence, methods were investigated for the separation of acetone from water by salting out so that possible solvent extraction of metal chelates into this solvent could be performed. About two-thirds saturated calcium chloride proved to be the best system for salting out of the acetone. It is essentially a neutral salt and is in general a weakly complexing salt, resulting in minimum interference in solvent extractions. Solvent …

Comparison Of Three Schools Of Thought In The Foundations Of Mathematics, Carolyn Rhodes
Honors Theses
Some of the most memorable events of the twentieth century took place as a result of conflict. Out of the numerous conflicts staged during this period, only one was resolved not on a common everyday piece of writing paper. The proponents of the conflict--E. V. Huntington, Oswald Veblen, Bertrand Russell, A. N. Whitehead, and David Hilbert--did not use weapons, but they used basic mathematical structure to wage the most extensive and critical investigation into the foundations of mathematics. As a result three schools of thought which are of special prominence and interest were brought to light. These are the postulational …
Bayesian Statistics: The Fundamental Theorem, Carolyn Rhodes
Bayesian Statistics: The Fundamental Theorem, Carolyn Rhodes
Honors Theses
The problem of the foundation of statistics is to state a set of principles which entail the validity of all correct statistical inference, and which do not imply that any fallacious inferences is valid. This sentence describes the purpose of much writing on statistical inferences, in general, and Bayesian statistics, in particular. Bayesian statistics was first introduced in a publication by Thomas Bayes in The London Philosophical Transactions, volumes 53 and 54 for the years 1763 and 1764, after Bayes' death in 1761. However, since the entire statistical research of Bayes' involves enormous study, this paper will limit itself to …

The rates of oxidation of four chelating agents, NTA, EDTA, CDTA, and DTPA with Ce(IV), in sulfuric acid media, were determined spectrophotometrically by a stopped-flow technique. The reductive ability is in the order CDTA > EDTA > DTPA > NTA. The influence of varying the acidity of the medium was studied, and in each case a maximum in the rate constant vs. [H+] plot was observed. A possible interpretation of the reactivities and the influence of acidity is advanced. © 1971 Springer-Verlag.
