Groundwater Flow In A Sandy Tidal Beach 2. Two-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis., C. S. Fang, S. N. Wang, W. Harrison Jan 1972

Groundwater Flow In A Sandy Tidal Beach 2. Two-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis., C. S. Fang, S. N. Wang, W. Harrison

VIMS Articles

Two-dimensional finite element techniques are described that model closely the complicated fluctuations osbserved in the water table of an ocean beach. The use of triangular elements permits the specification of more realistic boundary conditions than the use of line elements in a one-dimensional model. Also, results obtained from the two-dimensional model for the region closet o the ocean compare more favorably with field data than results obtained from the one-dimensional finite element model.

Late Quaternary Eustatic Sea-Level Changes Along The Malibu Coast, Los Angeles County, California, Peter W. Birkeland Jan 1972

Late Quaternary Eustatic Sea-Level Changes Along The Malibu Coast, Los Angeles County, California, Peter W. Birkeland

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Late Quaternary relative sea-level changes along the Malibu coast can be deciphered by study of geomorphic features and marine and associated stream deposits. Evidence for such changes includes (a) stream downcutting in large valleys during low stands of sea level, (b) stream aggradation in the same valleys during high stands of sea level, and (c) marine shoreline angles whose altitudes coincide with the tops of valley-fill stream deposits. This evidence, and open-system uranium-series dates for shells from the Corral and Dume terrace deposits, provide a time scale for certain sea-level changes. Evidence from other …

Pheasant Production Using Wild Cocks And Penned Game-Farm Hens, Michael R. Grode Jan 1972

Pheasant Production Using Wild Cocks And Penned Game-Farm Hens, Michael R. Grode

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pheasant production using free-flying wild cooks and penned game-farm hens was evaluated during 1971. Hens were placed in 0.5-acre pens to compare production at density levels of 10, 20, and 40 hens per acre. Wild cooks entered the 0.5-acre pens the day following introduction of the game-farm hens. The greatest numbers of cooks were observed in the pens with the highest density of hens. Censusing in mid-March indicated a population of 12 to 15 wild cooks in the vicinity of the study pens. A known mortality of 31 hens occurred and percentage mortality was similar at each density level. Pulling …

Classifications Of Plane Continua, Steven Ray Matthews Jan 1972

Classifications Of Plane Continua, Steven Ray Matthews

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In the course of studying continua in the plane it has been asked if a given continuum has uncountably many disjoint duplications in the plane, and if so, what are the consequences of the existence of such a collection. The object of this paper is to study these problems and to develop some machinery useful in their resolution. In Section I, we review the definition of convergence and homeomorphic convergence of point sets in a metric space S. We then consider the space, π of all continuous functions from a compact metric space P to a separable metric space Q …

An Argument For The Open Ocean Siting Of Coastal Thermal Electric Plants, Clarence M. Tarzwell Jan 1972

An Argument For The Open Ocean Siting Of Coastal Thermal Electric Plants, Clarence M. Tarzwell

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

A great deal of research is yet to be done before we will definitely know all the effects of thermal electric generating plants. It is evident, however, that the chlorination of the intake water is definitely lethal to a high percentage of planktonic and other organisms; that thermal shock is detrimental to some of the more sensitive forms; that the continued exposure to high temperatures after thermal shock is lethal to many forms, especially the zooplankton; that the screening and turbulence in such plants is lethal to larval fishes and several invertebrates, and that immense amounts of waters are put …

Septic Tank Nutrients In Groundwater Entering Lake Sallie, Minnesota, David Robert Lee Jan 1972

Septic Tank Nutrients In Groundwater Entering Lake Sallie, Minnesota, David Robert Lee

Theses and Dissertations

The nutrient contribution of septic tanks to a lake was evaluated at Lake Sallie, in glacial outwash terrain of northwestern Minnesota. Groundwater entering the lake was collected by covering 0.258 m2 of lake bed with a bottomless cylinder vented to deflated plastic bag. Inflow velocity ranged from 0.01 to 2.5 micrometers per-second along 30% of the lakeshore. Groundwater inflow along an 800 m segment of shore amounted to 4.50 x 105 m3/year, and was uniformly distributed along the shore, but decreased exponentially away from shore.

Effluent from a heavily-used lakeside septic tank fanned out along the surface of the water …

Black Magnetic Spherules From The Glacial And Sea Ice Of Fletcher's Ice Island (T-3), Richard Scattolini

Theses and Dissertations

Black magnetic spherules are particles which can be derived by ablationary processes from cosmic sources. Spherules from both the glacial ice and sea ice of Fletcher's Ice Island (T-3) were studied to determine their size distribution, sedimentation rates, and other parameters. The results were examined and shown to be similar to those of other researchers' work elsewhere.

Calculated sedimentation rates for glacial ice spherules, extrapolated for the entire earth's surface, range from 1.1 x 10⁴ to 1.1 x 10⁵ metric tons per year. Calculated sedimentation rates for sea ice spherules range from 5.0 x 10³ to 1.6 x 10⁵ metric …

Adsorption Of Rare Gas Atoms On Xenon, Donald E. Hagen Jan 1972

Adsorption Of Rare Gas Atoms On Xenon, Donald E. Hagen

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The problem of adsorption of rare gas atoms on solids is treated for the case of submonolayer films. An energy spectrum calculation method which is suitable for band structure or heat capacity calculations is discussed. It is particularly useful for adsorbate-substrate systems in the region intermediate between "tight binding" and "plane wave" behavior. The method employs a technique introduced by Kohn and Luttinger of using the eigenfunctions corresponding to a particular point in the Brillouin zone as a basis set. The cases of He and Ne adsorbed on Xe are discussed.

Determination Of Trace Elements In Water Utilizaing Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy Measurement, Gary D. Christian, J. Preston Miles Iii, Ronald Sensmeier, Melvin Sensmeier, Loraine Craig, Lynn Phibrick, Sudarshan Lal Jan 1972

Determination Of Trace Elements In Water Utilizaing Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy Measurement, Gary D. Christian, J. Preston Miles Iii, Ronald Sensmeier, Melvin Sensmeier, Loraine Craig, Lynn Phibrick, Sudarshan Lal

KWRRI Research Reports

A variety of flameless atomic absorption methods have been investigated for the possible determination of trace elements in water. The general applicability of each technique was determined and where applicable, procedures have been developed for the determination of trace elements in natural waters.

Metals were preconcentrated by electrodeposition on a wire. The metals were then atomized for atomic absorption measurement by resistive heating of the wire. As little as 0.01 part per million (ppm) of mercury could be determined in this way.

A mercury cold vapor cell was constructed in which the sample is treated with a reducing agent to …

KWRRI Research Reports

Leaves collected at 4 stations in the upper 5 km of Doe Run, Meade County, Kentucky, indicated an annual accumulation within the stream of 354 g/m2/year (17,700 kg). Leaves of sycamore (23.6%), red oak (21.7%), sugar maple (9.7%), beech (9.6%), white oak (7.1%), and hickory (6.0%) trees were most abundant, and leaves from 14 other kinds made up the remaining 22.3%. About a third of the annual leaf fall occurred during the last half of October and about two-thirds in the last 3 months of the year.

Calorific equivalents for different kinds of leaves ranged from 3,789 cal/g …

Factors Regulating The Growth Of Algae In Continuous Culture In Diluted Secondary Sewage Treatment Plant Effluent And Subsequent Biodegradability, Edward G. Foree, Caroline P. Wade Jan 1972

Factors Regulating The Growth Of Algae In Continuous Culture In Diluted Secondary Sewage Treatment Plant Effluent And Subsequent Biodegradability, Edward G. Foree, Caroline P. Wade

KWRRI Research Reports

Heterogeneous algal cultures were grown in laboratory continuous culture in continuous flow, completely mixed chemostats in secondary sewage treatment plant effluent diluted to give an ammonia nitrogen concentration of 10 mg/1. Variables were lighting, pH, carbon dioxide availability, and hydraulic residence time.

Optimum growth occurred under pH 7.0, excess CO2, and continuous lighting conditions. The availability of artificially supplied excess CO2 greatly increased the mass (standing crop) at steady-state over that produced under otherwise identical conditions for all residence times studied. For the case of excess CO2 availability, the nitrogen concentration in the algal cells regulated …

An Investigation Of Methods For Reuse Of Rubber Tires, Charles Edward Armbruster Jan 1972

An Investigation Of Methods For Reuse Of Rubber Tires, Charles Edward Armbruster

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Methods of reusing/recycling the more than 250 million automobile and truck tires which are worn out each year were investigated. The existing methods of reusing tires account for about 30 percent of the volume of scrap tires generated each year. These methods are, Retreading, Reclaiming (by reducing to ground up rubber and fiber), and Tire Splitting (stamp items out of sidewall and tread areas). Several possibilities for reusing/recycling the unused 70 percent were discovered. These methods are as follows: Destructive Distillation -- a method of recovering chemicals from tires by pyrolitic action. It is anticipated that eventually as much as …

Localized Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Robert Russell Garrett Jan 1972

Localized Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Robert Russell Garrett

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The report describes an alternative to the use of septic tanks for invidual dwellings. The major problems confronting the larger wastewater treatment plants (0.012 to 10 million gallons per day) in central Florida are also discussed. Solutions in this report are for individual and multi-unit dwelling treatment systems (to 0.06 MGD). these units can provide 90% biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids (SS) removal in accord with new state and county regulations. A comparison of the large versus the small plants reveals that small innovative plants, though more expensive, are more environmentally sound than the poorly operated large facilities. …

Sinkholes In Florida And Their Effect On Man's Environment, Gregory Jackson Skinner Jan 1972

Sinkholes In Florida And Their Effect On Man's Environment, Gregory Jackson Skinner

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The primary reason for making the research study on "Sinkholes in Florida and Their Effect on Man's Environment", is an interest in learning more about this somewhat unique phenomenon and how it is likely to affect man in the future, particularly here in Central Florida. This is significant at this time in view of the large number of existing sinkholes, the frequency of occurrence, the projected population and economic growth, and the possible impact this growth may have on future sinkhole occurrences. The research concentrated on possible causes, effects, frequencies, locations and mean of predicting future sinkhole development. There is …
