Renewable energy sources are indispensable components of sustainable electrical systems that reduce human dependence on fossil fuels. However, due to their intermittent nature, there are issues that need to be addressed to ensure the security and resiliency of these power systems. This dissertation formulates several practical problems, from an optimization perspective, stemming from the increasing penetration of intermittent renewable energy to power systems. A number of Optimal Power Flow (OPF) formulations are investigated and new formulations are proposed to control both operations and planning risks by utilizing the Conditional Value–at–Risk (CVaR) measure. As the fastest growing ecosystem globally, an innovative way of managing stormwater is needed to address the increase in urban run-off. The Thrasher research group undertook a program dedicated towards the development of a library of fluorinated materials that focused on the synthesis and characterization of perfluoroalkoxy (PFA) copolymers of tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) and perfluoroalkyl trifluorovinyl ethers. An Optical tweezer is a tightly focused laser beam that applies and senses precise and localized optical force to a dielectric microsphere and offers a unique and effective tool for manipulating the single cell or cell components, including nucleotides and dynein motor proteins. Here, I used highly stabilized optomechanical components and ultra-sensitive detection modules to significantly improve the measurement capabilities over a wide range of temporal and spatial scales. The entirety of the γ-ray radiation permeating our Universe is encoded in the extragalactic γ-ray background. This is a superposition of resolved sources, mostly powerful relativistic jets powered by supermassive black holes, i.e., blazars, and an unresolved isotropic component, aka, the diffuse isotropic gamma-ray background (IGRB). Studying the IGRB can help unveil its composition, as well as unearth multi-messenger relationships between the intensities of PeV neutrinos, ultra high energy cosmic rays (> 1018 eV), and sub-TeV γ-rays. The long-standing paradigm has been that the structures of biomolecules, or the arrangement of the subunits that make up a biomolecule, determine biological function. However, biomolecules are not static objects. Instead, they often undergo structural rearrangements that are crucial to enabling and regulating their functions. Explicit convergence rates to equilibrium are established for non reversible Markov chains not having an atom via coupling methods. We consider two Markov chains having the same transition function but different initial conditions on the same probability space, that is, a coupling. A random time is constructed so that subsequent to the random time the two processes are identical. Exploiting a shadowing condition, we show that it is possible to bound the tail distribution of the random time using only one of the chains. In this dissertation, we develop novel techniques that allow for the regression analysis of data emerging from group testing processes and set the groundwork for graphic processing units (GPU) enabled implementations. Group testing primarily occurs in clinical laboratories, where it is used to quickly and cheaply diagnose patients. Typically, group testing tests a pooled specimen--several specimens combined into one sample--instead of testing individual specimens one-by-one. This method reduces costs by using fewer tests when the disease prevalence is low. Computational simulations used in many fields have parameters that define models that are used to evaluate simulated properties. When developing these models, the goal is to choose the parameters that best replicate a set of desired properties. Mathematical optimization methods can be used to optimize the simulation parameters by defining a function that uses simulation parameters as input and outputs a value describing how well a set of experimental properties are reproduced.

Tracking cells over time is a fundamental task in live-cell imaging, and often requires costly manual analysis if images are not acquired with high enough frame rate. Acquiring high frame rate images, however, can limit the number of conditions explored and cells analyzed, and contribute to photobleaching, which makes fluorophores dimmer and phototoxicity, which affects cell health and renders the resulting data unusable.

Exploitation impacts and management options for 15 coral reef fish species central to the commercial and recreational fisheries of the southern Florida USA coral reef ecosystem were evaluated using a length-based risk analysis (LBRA) framework. Population abundance-at-length composition data were obtained from several regional federal-state sampling programs. These and updated life history demographic data were integrated into a length-based numerical cohort model to generate LBRA fishery sustainability metrics from a probabilistic perspective. α-crystallin-membrane association increases with age and cataracts, with the primary association site of α-crystallin being phospholipids. However, it is unclear if phospholipids’ acyl chain length and degree of unsaturation influence α-crystallin association. We used the electron paramagnetic resonance approach to investigate the association of α-crystallin with phosphatidylcholine (PC) membranes of different acyl chain lengths and degrees of unsaturation and with and without cholesterol (Chol). The UCNA Experiment at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) uses an electron spectrometer to observe angular correlations between the neutron spin and the momenta of β particles emitted during the process of β decay. These angular correlations give rise to an asymmetry determined by the ratio of two coupling constants, gA and gV . Combined with neutron lifetime measurements, these observations probe physics beyond the standard model through unitarity tests of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa Matrix. Ferroelectric liquid crystalline polymers (LCPs) hold promise for various applications driven by low electric fields, e.g., electrocaloric materials, because of the higher molecular motion in the liquid crystalline (LC) state. However, traditional chiral smectic C (SmC*) LCPs exhibit small spontaneous polarizations due to the bulky aromatic mesogens and weak polar groups. This dissertation research is focused on the design of mesogen-free sulfonylated LCPs with a goal of seeking the ferroelectric SmC* phase. This work presents the development of a high-rate 6Li-based pixelated neutron detector for neutron reflectometry instruments at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The current detector technology falls short on the instrument requirements, particularly on the counting rate capability. This detector was designed specifically to overcome the limitation in counting rate by having a fully pixelated design from neutron conversion layer to photodetector and readout system. Alkali Linewidths Under High Temperatures And Pressures Of 3he, Michael Parker

Current research at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility is being conducted to study the spin structure of the neutron through collisions with polarized 3He nuclei. The helium is contained in high pressure glass vessels (called cells) along with nitrogen, rubidium, and potassium. To deduce the spin structure from collisions, we need to know the precise number density of 3He in the cell. The process of polarizing 3He through spin-exchange optical pumping requires nitrogen and alkali metal. We can use the absorption linewidths of rubidium and potassium to more accurately determine the density of helium. Throughout my research, I collected absorption …

The major aim of my dissertation was to investigate the etiology of dry eye disease which affects about 7 million people in the United States, causing symptoms that can lead to visual disturbance. Correlation between dry eye and an abnormal lipid layer of the tear film has been found. Tear film lipids originate mostly from the meibomian glands. Cholesteryl ester (CE) and Wax ester (WE) lipids make up most of the human meibum lipidome and the CE/WE ratio has been shown to decrease in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction.
