Characterizing Equivalence And Correctness Properties Of Dynamic Mode Decomposition And Subspace Identification Algorithms, Samuel Gregory Neff

Theses and Dissertations

We examine the related nature of two identification algorithms, subspace identification (SID) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), and their correctness properties over a broad range of problems. This investigation begins by noting the strong relationship between the two algorithms, both drawing significantly on the pseudoinverse calculation using singular value decomposition, and ultimately revealing that DMD can be viewed as a substep of SID. We then perform extensive computational studies, characterizing the performance of SID on problems of various model orders and noise levels. Specifically, we generate 10,000 random systems for each model order and noise level, calculating the average identification …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Redox-Active Multidentate Ligands For Catalytic C-H Bond Oxidation And Carbon Dioxide Reduction, Caroline Hodge

Honors Theses

This thesis focuses on two research projects. The first project reported in Chapter 1 involves the synthesis and application of a tetradentate ligand (2-(1,1-di(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl)-1,10-phenanthroline, PhenPY2Me) that is metalated with iron to give a catalyst capable of carbon-hydrogen (C-H) bond oxidation. C-H bond oxidation provides a method that may allow some transformations in organic syntheses to be streamlined. The mononuclear iron complex supported by PhenPY2Me was found to dimerize in the presence of O2 in a non-coordinating solvent. These iron complexes and a previously reported system were assessed and compared in C-H bond oxidation with model substrates using the sacrificial …

Examining Bacteriophage Reliance On The Tola Protein Of Escherichia Coli, Ellen Davis Apr 2022

Examining Bacteriophage Reliance On The Tola Protein Of Escherichia Coli, Ellen Davis

Honors Projects

With the ever-growing crisis of antibiotic resistant bacteria, bacteriophage provide an important potential alternative therapy to treat infections when antibiotics are ineffective. For this reason, it is important to understand the mechanisms bacteriophage use to enter their bacterial host cell. The cellular envelope of the gram-negative bacterium E. coli contains a protein system known as Tol-Pal, which utilizes energy from the Proton Motive Force to carry out several cellular functions, including some associated with cellular division and outer-membrane stability. Certain bacteriophage take advantage of the energy produced by this system to cross the bacterial cell membrane. One important protein of …

Quantization For Infinite Affine Transformations, Dogan Comez, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Quantization for a probability distribution refers to the idea of estimating a given probability by a discrete probability supported by a finite set. In this article, we consider a probability distribution generated by an infinite system of affine transformations {S-ij} on R-2 with associated probabilities {p(ij)} such that p(ij) > 0 for all i, j is an element of N and Sigma(infinity)(i,j=1) p(ij) = 1. For such a probability measure P, the optimal sets of n-means and the nth quantization error are calculated for every natural number n. It is shown that the distribution of such a probability measure is the …
