Algorithms For Regular Chains Of Dimension One, Juan P. Gonzalez Trochez
Algorithms For Regular Chains Of Dimension One, Juan P. Gonzalez Trochez
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
One of the core commands in the RegularChains library inside Maple is Triangularize. The underlying decomposes the solution set of a polynomial system into geometrically meaningful components represented by regular chains. This algorithm works by repeatedly calling a procedure, called Intersect, which computes the common zeros of a polynomial p and a regular chain T .
As the number of variables of p and T , as well as their degrees, increase, the call to the function Intersect(p, T ) becomes more and more computationally expensive. It was observed in that when the input polynomial system is zero-dimensional and T …

As nuclear power plants age and their lifetimes are extended, it is critical to be able to accurately assess the long-term integrity of the reactor structural materials. A current investigation into a leak in the End Shield Cooling (ESC) System in Ontario Power Generation’s Pickering Unit 6 reactor has raised a potential issue. The corrosion of the supporting structural materials (carbon steel (CS) and stainless steel (SS)) in the presence of ionizing radiation in small stagnant solutions and humid air conditions therefore needs careful evaluation.
This project investigates the effect of water radiolysis and humid air radiolysis products (H2 …
Database Query Execution Through Virtual Reality, Logan Bateman, Marc Butler
Database Query Execution Through Virtual Reality, Logan Bateman, Marc Butler
Campus Research Day
Building database queries often requires technical knowledge of a query language. However, company employees, such as executives, managers, and others (outside of software research and development, generally) may not have the pre-required knowledge to accurately construct and execute database queries. This paper proposes an approach to constructing database queries using virtual reality. This approach utilizes natural hand or controller gestures which map to various components of building and visualizing database queries.

Apache Kafka specializes in the transfer of incredibly large amounts of data in real-time between devices. However, it can be difficult to comprehend the inner workings of Kafka. Often, to get real-time data, a user must run complicated commands from within the Kafka CLI. Our contribution is a tool that monitors Kafka consumers, producers, and topics, and displays the flow of events between them in a web-based dashboard. This dashboard serves to reduce the complexity of Kafka and enables users unfamiliar with the platform and protocol to better understand how their architecture is configured.

Synthesis Of Benzophenone-O-Glycosides Under Basic Conditions, Samuel Burns
Synthesis Of Benzophenone-O-Glycosides Under Basic Conditions, Samuel Burns
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2022
Type 2 diabetes is a growing health concern worldwide characterized by high blood sugar. Anti-diabetic therapy aims at correcting this sugar imbalance by inhibiting the enzyme α-glucosidase which is responsible for cleaving carbohydrates and starch into glucose. Benzophenone glycosides are a class of biomolecules with α-glucosidase inhibitory properties that have garnered some attention. It can be found and isolated from some traditional medicinal plants which was not done for this project. Once isolated, new derivatives can be synthesized by manipulating protecting groups of the starting material to get the benzophenone. The benzophenone can then undergo glycosylation with the protected sugar …

Kynurenic acid is a by-product of tryptophan metabolism in humans, with abnormal levels indicative of disease. There is a need for water-soluble receptors that selectively bind kynurenic acid, allowing for detection and quantification. We report here the high-affinity binding of kynurenic acid in aqueous media to a resorcinarene salt receptor decorated with four flexible naphthalene groups at the upper rim. Experimental results from 1H NMR, isothermal titration calorimetry, and electronic absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies all support high-affinity binding and selectivity for kynurenic acid over tryptophan. The measured binding constant (K = 1.46 ± 0.21 × 105 M−1) is one …

Environment and Sustainability Presentations
The Ursinus Food Forest began a commitment to a new form of sustainable land management at Whittaker Environmental Research Station. This management integrates lessons from urban agriculture, urban forestry, and agroforestry (see Clark & Nichols 2013) with principles of permaculture (Jacke et al 2005). Begun in 2017, and this past fall marked 2 years since the planting of phase one in 2019. In the fall of 2021 students, faculty, facilities, and volunteers planted the second phase of the food forest site, which added 7 new food producing species. Including this, many projects were created to enhance the site throughout the …
The Replacement Rule For Nonlinear Shallow Water Waves, A. Ludu, Z. Zong
The Replacement Rule For Nonlinear Shallow Water Waves, A. Ludu, Z. Zong
Publications
When a (1 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear PDE in real function η(x, t) admits localized traveling solutions we can consider L to be the average width of the envelope, A the average value of the amplitude of the envelope, and V the group velocity of such a solution. The replacement rule (RR or nonlinear dispersion relation) procedure is able to provide a simple qualitative relation between these three parameters, without actually solve the equation. Examples are provided from KdV, C-H and BBM equations, but the procedure appears to be almost universally valid for such (1 + 1)-dimensional nonlinear PDE and their …

We describe a system for high-temperature investigations of bacterial motility using a digital holographic microscope completely submerged in heated water. Temperatures above 90°C could be achieved, with a constant 5°C offset between the sample temperature and the surrounding water bath. Using this system, we observed active motility in Bacillus subtilis up to 66°C. As temperatures rose, most cells became immobilized on the surface, but a fraction of cells remained highly motile at distances of >100 μm above the surface. Suspended non-motile cells showed Brownian motion that scaled consistently with temperature and viscosity. A novel open-source automated tracking package was used …

Fast Photochemical Oxidation And Footprinting Of Proteins Via Trifluoromethyl Radical Chemistry, Elaine Morrow
Fast Photochemical Oxidation And Footprinting Of Proteins Via Trifluoromethyl Radical Chemistry, Elaine Morrow
Honors Theses
Fast photochemical oxidation of proteins (FPOP) is a useful tool in proteomics because of the ability for modifications to occur on the scale of microseconds which reduces the modifications to tertiary and quaternary structure allowing for more accurate labeling of the protein. Labels for FPOP are generated from various radicals in our experiments which include hydroxyl radicals and trifluoromethyl radicals. Hydroxyl radicals are easily generated by using an excimer laser (KrF laser, 248 nm) or a UV flash lamp (as a part of the Fox™ System) by the photolysis of hydrogen peroxide. Trifluoromethyl radicals, however, need hydroxyl radicals to be …
Einstein-Roscoe Regression For The Slag Viscosity Prediction Problem In Steelmaking, Hiroto Saigo, Dukka Kc, Noritaka Saito
Einstein-Roscoe Regression For The Slag Viscosity Prediction Problem In Steelmaking, Hiroto Saigo, Dukka Kc, Noritaka Saito
Michigan Tech Publications
In classical machine learning, regressors are trained without attempting to gain insight into the mechanism connecting inputs and outputs. Natural sciences, however, are interested in finding a robust interpretable function for the target phenomenon, that can return predictions even outside of the training domains. This paper focuses on viscosity prediction problem in steelmaking, and proposes Einstein-Roscoe regression (ERR), which learns the coefficients of the Einstein-Roscoe equation, and is able to extrapolate to unseen domains. Besides, it is often the case in the natural sciences that some measurements are unavailable or expensive than the others due to physical constraints. To this …

Biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play crucial roles in ecosystems at multiple scales, ranging from mediating soil microbial interactions to contributing to atmospheric chemistry. However, soil VOCs and how they respond to environmental change remains understudied. We aimed to assess how 2 abiotic global change drivers, soil warming and simulated nitrogen (N) deposition, impact soil VOC emissions over time in a temperate forest. We characterized the effect of warming, N deposition, and their interaction on the composition and emissions of soil VOCs during the growing season of 2 consecutive years. We found that chronic warming and N deposition enhanced total …
Interactions Of Tug-Ubl1 And Insulin And Implications For Glucose Uptake, Megan Kohout
Interactions Of Tug-Ubl1 And Insulin And Implications For Glucose Uptake, Megan Kohout
Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
TUG-UBL1 (Tether Containing UBX Domain for GLUT-4 Ubiquitin Like 1) is a glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) regulating protein which facilitates the release of GLUT4 transport vesicles when insulin stimulation is present. To understand the role of TUG-UBL1 in glucose metabolism, especially for type two diabetic patients for whom increases in insulin concentration do not correlate with increased glucose uptake, we explored the research question of whether TUG-UBL1 binds to insulin. Initially, models of full-length TUG-UBL1 (amino acids 1-473), the GLUT4 binding domain of TUG-UBL1 (amino acids 86-337), and the insulin heterodimer were built using PHYRE2. All of these structures were …

Determining The Sources Of The Zodiacal Cloud Using Relative Velocities Of Dust Particles From High-Resolution Spectroscopy, Philip B. Mann Iii
Determining The Sources Of The Zodiacal Cloud Using Relative Velocities Of Dust Particles From High-Resolution Spectroscopy, Philip B. Mann Iii
Beyond: Undergraduate Research Journal
The zodiacal cloud is the Solar System debris disk in which the Earth’s orbit is located. The dust that comprises the cloud comes from cometary, asteroidal, interstellar, and other source populations, but the relative ratios have proven hard to determine. However, asteroidal and cometary particles typically have different types of orbits, with asteroidal particles having more circular and lower inclination orbits than cometary particles. Accordingly, the relative velocities of these groups of particles with respect to Earth are also different, and measurements of these relative velocities can help distinguish between the sources. The spectrum of the zodiacal light contains solar …

Deep Learning For Load Forecasting With Smart Meter Data: Online And Federated Learning, Mohammad Navid Fekri
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Electricity load forecasting has been attracting increasing attention because of its importance for energy management, infrastructure planning, and budgeting. In recent years, the proliferation of smart meters has created new opportunities for forecasting on the building and even individual household levels. Machine learning (ML) has achieved great successes in this domain; however, conventional ML techniques require data transfer to a centralized location for model training, therefore, increasing network traffic and exposing data to privacy and security risks. Also, traditional approaches employ offline learning, which means that they are only trained once and miss out on the possibility to learn from …
Connections Between Interglacial Variation And Lithological Variability Within Midland Basin Permian Shale Rocks In Martin County, Texas, Helen Rice Hammon
Connections Between Interglacial Variation And Lithological Variability Within Midland Basin Permian Shale Rocks In Martin County, Texas, Helen Rice Hammon
LSU Master's Theses
The Upper Pennsylvanian (323.2–289.9 Ma) and Lower Permian (289.9-251 Ma), (Wolfcamp and Spraberry formations) interval of the Midland Basin, West Texas, contains a mixed succession of shale, carbonate, and siltstone/sandstone lithofacies that accumulated in a deep-water marine environment under variable hydrographic restrictions. The heterogenous stratigraphy found in the Wolfcamp and Spraberry formation was formed in response to variations in sea level and a transition from a glacial to an interglacial climate during the Early Permian. These fluctuations left behind alternating beds of mudstone and carbonate, interwoven with thin sandstone beds. Because the Wolfcamp and Spraberry formations are highly heterolithic, it …
Statistical Applications To The Management Of Intensive Care And Step-Down Units, Yawo Mamoua Kobara
Statistical Applications To The Management Of Intensive Care And Step-Down Units, Yawo Mamoua Kobara
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This thesis proposes three contributing manuscripts related to patient flow management, server decision-making, and ventilation time in the intensive care and step-down units system.
First, a Markov decision process (MDP) model with a Monte Carlo simulation was performed to compare two patient flow policies: prioritizing premature step-down and prioritizing rejection of patients when the intensive care unit is congested. The optimal decisions were obtained under the two strategies. The simulation results based on these optimal decisions show that a premature step-down strategy contributes to higher congestion downstream. Counter-intuitively, premature step-down should be discouraged, and patient rejection or divergence actions should …

The Effects Of Paclitaxel On Cellular Migration And The Cytoskeleton, Ashley Salguero-Gonzalez
Thinking Matters Symposium
In a clinical setting, some patients are exposed to an anti-cancer chemotherapy agent, paclitaxel. Cancerous cells undergo rapid, continuous cell division without control. Chemotherapy treatments try to slow and stop the uncontrollable cell division cycles and eliminate cancerous cells in the process. Paclitaxel serves as a treatment for some types of cancers, including lung, melanoma, bladder, and esophageal. Because it targets the cytoskeleton, paclitaxel can also influence cell migration. This project utilizes a cellular migration assay and an immunohistochemistry assay to analyze the effects of paclitaxel on the movement of cells and on the cytoskeleton of neuroglia rat cells with …

What is the shape of the novel coronavirus which has turned our world upside down? Even though under a microscope it looks dull, unattractive, and even disgusting, creative artists have attributed to it bright colors, made it look pretty, and depicted it as a thing of beauty. What can a mathematician contribute to this effort? We take a purist’s point of view by imposing on it a quasi-symmetry and then deriving some consequences. In an idealistic world, far removed from reality but still obeying the rules of mathematics, anyone can enjoy this ethereal beauty of the mind’s creation, beckoning others …
