Carbon Neutrality Policy Measures In Global Major Economies, Jianfang Wang, Liyang Su, Xianchun Tan, Xiaoyi Chen, Chunlei Ge
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
This study focuses on the strategies, targets and policy measures for carbon neutrality in global major economies. The research shows that due to the different socio-economic and political foundations, the transition strategy towards carbon neutrality in major economies is also varied, which can be divided into four categories:leading strategy, growth strategy, following strategy, and swing strategy. Most of them build carbon neutrality target system with the framework of "target roadmap+targets in key areas", but leading countries usually integrate targets into legislation and thus the objective is legally binding, while others tend to weaken emission reduction targets and focus on the …

The Solar-Electric Sail: Application To Interstellar Migration And Consequences For Seti, Gregory Matloff
Publications and Research
The Solar-Electric Sail accelerates by reflecting positively charged solar wind ions. If it is used to propel an interstellar migration mission, its interstellar cruise velocity relative to the home star cannot exceed the solar wind velocity. In an effort to analytically determine interstellar cruise velocity for a 107 kg generation ship, a constant solar wind velocity within the heliosphere of a Sun-like star of 600 km/s is assumed. The solar wind proton density at 1 AU is also considered constant at 10 protons per cubic centimeter. Solar wind density is assumed to decrease with the inverse square of solar distance. …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: With the development of affective computing, the correlation of memory, individuation and emotion is more and more important. Focus on the machine emotion shortcomings in the perception, understanding and expression, an emotion computing model integrating the emotion perception, understanding and expression is proposed. The model is a memory-oriented deep network perception model that accepts multiple modal inputs (visual, auditory, lexical) and applies a fuzzy emotion integration decision to realize the understanding of uncertain emotions. The simulation experiments prove that the model has a good performance in all kinds of multimodal affective computing.

Abstract: Transmission line inspection is an important work to ensure the safe operation of the power grid. It involves the live-work, the power-outage-maintenance and the fault-diagnosis. Training using only 3D virtual technology cannot achieve realistic results. It is necessary to combine 3D virtual scenes with digital grids. To this end, using the collected monitoring data and multi-time-scale calculation models, a twin state digital power grid has been constructed for the live-work, a parallel state digital power grid has been constructed for the power-outage-maintenance, and corresponding analog devices have been added to the parallel digital power grid to complete the training …

X-Ray Crystallographic Analysis Of Quinoline N-Oxide And Isoquinoline N-Oxide With Zinc Halides, Nitrates, Perchlorates., Erin N. Groneck
GS4 Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium
We have worked to analyze the chemistry between aromatic N-oxides, Quinoline N-oxide and Isoquinoline N-oxide, with zinc halides, nitrates, and perchlorates by X-ray crystallography. These structures were formed by reaction of the aromatic N-oxides with an equivalent of the zinc halide, nitrate, or perchlorate. These N-oxides had been chosen due to being the focus of this study. We will present the crystallographic X-ray structures of the synthesized novel complexes of the N-oxides with either a zinc halide, zinc nitrate, and zinc perchlorate.
Promoting Ecosystem Services By Implementing Agroforestry, Martin L. Emerson
Promoting Ecosystem Services By Implementing Agroforestry, Martin L. Emerson
Ideas: Exhibit Catalog for the Honors College Visiting Scholars Series
A recent proposal to enhance the sustainability of agriculture is agroforestry, the practice of integrating trees into farmland. This technique can be analyzed through the ecosystem services model, which describes the interrelatedness of natural land, managed land, producers, and consumers. Agroforestry could shelter crops from the adverse weather conditions as well as provide habitat for wildlife. On the other hand, implementing agroforestry would also entail the drawback of a substantial upfront cost. Environmental scientists propose that efforts to reinforce ecosystem services could play a significant role in mitigating the effects of global environmental change on agriculture.

A Unified Representation And Deep Learning Architecture For Persuasive Essays In English, Muhammad Tawsif Sazid
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
We develop a novel unified representation for the argumentation mining task facilitating the extracting from text and the labelling of the non-argumentative units and argumentation components—premises, claims, and major claims—and the argumentative relations—premise to claim or premise in a support or attack relation, and claim to major claim in a for or against relation—in an end-to-end machine learning pipeline. This tightly integrated representation combines the
component and relation identification sub-problems and enables a unitary solution for detecting argumentation structures. This new representation together with a new deep learning architecture composed of a mixed embedding method, a multi-head attention layer, two …

Student-Developed Laboratory Activities Using Rolling Object On An Inclined Plane To Improve Student Learning, Qing Shao, Joseph Ametepe
Georgia Journal of Science
This work presents an alternative method of teaching undergraduate introductory physics laboratory. Students are presented with an experimental scenario “Rolling object on an inclined plane” and guided to develop their own laboratory activities in a studio-style setting. The overall goal of this alternative approach is to shift part of the learning responsibility to students. Through guided self-developed activities, students establish the connections between different physics concepts. Such a shift makes students active participants in the classroom, allows them to explore ideas independently, and discover through doing the exploring. Furthermore, the pedagogy is aimed at (i) motivating and actively engaging students …
An Examination Of Olympic Sport Climbing Competition Format And Scoring System, Quang Nguyen, Hannah Butler, Gregory J. Matthews
An Examination Of Olympic Sport Climbing Competition Format And Scoring System, Quang Nguyen, Hannah Butler, Gregory J. Matthews
Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Sport climbing, which made its Olympic debut at the 2020 Summer Games, generally consists of three separate disciplines: speed climbing, bouldering, and lead climbing. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) only allowed one set of medals each for men and women in sport climbing. As a result, the governing body of sport climbing, rather than choosing only one of the three disciplines to include in the Olympics, decided to create a competition combining all three disciplines. In order to determine a winner, a combined scoring system was created using the product of the ranks across the three disciplines to determine …

Given a degraded input image, image restoration aims to recover the missing high-quality image content. Numerous applications demand effective image restoration, e.g., computational photography, surveillance, autonomous vehicles, and remote sensing. Significant advances in image restoration have been made in recent years, dominated by convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The widely-used CNN-based methods typically operate either on full-resolution or on progressively low-resolution representations. In the former case, spatial details are preserved but the contextual information cannot be precisely encoded. In the latter case, generated outputs are semantically reliable but spatially less accurate. This paper presents a new architecture with a holistic goal …

Cross-Temporal Snapshot Alignment For Dynamic Multi-Relational Networks, Lvjia Chen, Shangsong Liang
Machine Learning Faculty Publications
A dynamic network is often represented as a sequence of snapshots evolving over time. In certain real-world scenarios, the identities of nodes in snapshots of a dynamic network are unknown and need to be figured out. To deal with such a challenge, recently, the task of cross-temporal snapshot alignment for dynamic networks is proposed, which aims to match equivalent nodes across temporal snapshots of a dynamic network given a small set of identified nodes. However, in many dynamic multi-relational networks like temporal knowledge graphs, the relation type information of edges, which can be useful for the alignment task, is neglected …

Retrospective comparison of predictive models that describe competing hypotheses regarding system function can shed light on regulatory mechanisms within the framework of adaptive resource management. We applied this approach to a 28-year study of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scotica) in Scotland, with the aims of reducing uncertainty regarding important drivers of grouse population dynamics, and of evaluating the efficacy of using seasonal versus annual model assessments. We developed three sets of models that predicted pre-breeding and post-breeding grouse density, matching the timing of grouse counts on the ground. We updated conditions and management through time in the spirit …

Coil-To-Bridge Transitions Of Self-Assembled Water Chains Observed In A Nanoscopic Meniscus, Byung I. Kim, Ryan D. Boehm, Harrison Agrusa
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Ten downward portions in the large oscillatory force–distance curve reported earlier are analyzed to understand a nanoscale water meniscus confined between a sharp probe and a flat substrate in air. The sigmoidal shape of each portion leads to the assumption that the meniscus is made up of n independent transitions of two states: one for a coil state and the other for a bridge state. The analysis reveals that each downward portion occurs due to a coil-to-bridge transition of n self-assembled water chains whose length ranges between 197 and 383 chain units. The transition provides novel insights into water’s unique …

Abstract: Aiming at the study on the motion performance of a two-dimensional variable stiffness snake-robot, a Simulink/Adams co-simulation model is established, and the effects of the damping coefficient, the stiffness parameters and the angular frequency of the variable stiffness actuator on the motion energy consumption are analyzed. To realize the synchronous control of joint trajectory and stiffness, a motion controller based on two-layer CPG is proposed. The results show that the damping coefficient can effectively reduce the proportion of starting energy consumption of the variable stiffness snake-like robot, and the ratio of starting energy consumption increases with the stiffness parameter …

Simulation On Critical Conditions Of Delay Diffusion In Scale-Free Logistics Network, Hongguang Yao, Huihui Xiao, Hang Zhang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Aiming at the critical condition of delay diffusion in scale-free logistics network, a susceptible-infected-susceptible(SIS) model based on the density of delay nodes is established by mean field theory, and the critical value is solved. By designing the delay diffusion simulation system in logistics network, a virtual network with scale-free attribute is generated, and the critical condition is verified by simulation. The results show that there are a few key nodes with high value in scale-free logistics network. Once these nodes have service obstades, compared with other nodes, it will lead to a larger range of delay and faster …

Abstract: Based on the real business practice, the multi-trip and heterogeneous-fleet electric vehicle routing problem (MTHF-EVRP) with time windows in green logistics is studied. A path-based mixed-integer linear model is built for the precise solution to the small-scale instances. A hybrid variable neighborhood search algorithm (Hybrid VNS) combined the variable neighborhood search algorithm with the labeling algorithm is proposed for the large-scale instances. The algorithm generates a modified insertion heuristic with random factor to construct the initial solution, allows the time window and range violation, adopts the neighborhood operators for the local search, and applies a labeling algorithm to solve …

Nano-Fabricated Atomic Waveguides For Inertial Measurements, Adrian S. Orozco
Nano-Fabricated Atomic Waveguides For Inertial Measurements, Adrian S. Orozco
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Atom-based inertial measurement systems can measure acceleration and rotation very precisely in the laboratory. The central element of these systems is atom interferometry where the phase shifts are sensitive to inertial forces experienced by the atom. This phenomenon has been used to make atom-based gravimeters, gradiometers, and gyroscopes. Recent effort has been made to make these systems more compact which require small size, light weight, and low power (SWaP). Nano-fabricated waveguides, such as photonic waveguides or optical nanofibers, offer a promising avenue to meet these goals. They have dimensions comparable to the guided light’s wavelength producing a mode that not …

Raman Spectroscopic And Quantum Chemical Investigation Of The Pyridine-Borane Complex And The Effects Of Dative Bonding On The Normal Modes Of Pyridine, Ethan C. Lambert, Benjamin W. Stratton, Nathan I. Hammer
Faculty and Student Publications
The pyridine-borane (PyBH3) complex was analyzed by Raman vibrational spectroscopy and density functional theory to elucidate its structural and vibrational properties and to compare these with those for neat pyridine (Py). The borane-nitrogen (BN) bond length, the BN dative bond stretching frequency, and the effects of dative-bonded complex formation on Py are presented. Rather than having a single isolated stretching motion, the complex exhibits multiple BN dative bond stretches that are coupled to Py's vibrations. These modes exhibit large shifts that are higher in energy relative to neat Py, similar to previous observations of Py/water mixtures. However, significantly higher charge …

Abstract: In order to solve the problem that it's hard to reconcile the quality and computational efficiency of feature point matching. The initial matching for the extracted feature points is implemented through k-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm. According to the characteristics of equal length and same slope of the connecting line between matching points, the optimal geometric constraint is constructed based on the statistical sorting strategy to eliminate the obvious matching errors. Then random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm is utilized for further filtering to ensure the accuracy of the feature matching point pairs. Experimental results show that the method can obtain …
