The Use Of Singlebeam Echo-Sounder Depth Data To Produce Demersal Fish Distribution Models That Are Comparable To Models Produced Using Multibeam Echo-Sounder Depth, Marcela Montserrat Landero Figueroa, Miles J. G. Parsons, Benjamin J. Saunders, Ben Radford, Chandra Salgado-Kent, Iain M. Parnum

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Seafloor characteristics can help in the prediction of fish distribution, which is required for fisheries and conservation management. Despite this, only 5%–10% of the world's seafloor has been mapped at high resolution, as it is a time-consuming and expensive process. Multibeam echo-sounders (MBES) can produce high-resolution bathymetry and a broad swath coverage of the seafloor, but require greater financial and technical resources for operation and data analysis than singlebeam echo-sounders (SBES). In contrast, SBES provide comparatively limited spatial coverage, as only a single measurement is made from directly under the vessel. Thus, producing a continuous map requires interpolation to fill …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Reported growth rates (GR) of atrophic lesions in Stargardt disease (STGD1) vary widely. In the present study, we report the longitudinal natural history of patients with confirmed bial-lelic ABCA4 mutations from five genotype groups: c.6079C > T, c.[2588G > C;5603A > T], c.3113C > T, c.5882G > A and c.5603A > T. Fundus autofluorescence (AF) 30◦ × 30◦ images were manually seg-mented for boundaries of definitely decreased autofluorescence (DDAF). The primary outcome was the effective radius GR across five genotype groups. The age of DDAF formation in each eye was calculated using the x-intercept of the DDAF effective radius against age. Discordance between age at DDAF …

Fine Grained Delta Front Sediment Transport, Sarah Noel Dec 2021

Fine Grained Delta Front Sediment Transport, Sarah Noel

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Insights into transformative coastal processes are unlocked though understanding sediment transport mechanisms in fine-grained delta front environments. Movement of fine-grained sediments on delta fronts is not wholly explained through advection settling models. While advection settling models generally assume deposition into a still body, numerical modeling of sediment re-entrainment suggests there may be tidal, wave, and/or non-steady hydrograph influences allowing particles to reach greater distances by altering the decelerating velocity field. This research explores both an advection settling model and a mass conservation Rouse profile model to understand the irreducible delta front processes controlling sediment deposition. Using field data collected on …

On Predicting Omnidirectional Honey Bee Traffic Using Weather And Electromagnetic Radiation, Daniel G. Hornberger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Honey bees are responsible for pollinating many important crops in the United States. However, honey bee populations have declined significantly since 1961. While some causes of this decline are known, others are not. By utilizing electronic bee hive monitoring (EBM) systems, bee keepers and researchers have an added resource in determining the causes of these declines so that the issues can be remedied. For nearly five months (May through October) during the 2020 honey bee foraging season in Logan, Utah, USA, we collected on-site weather and electromagnetic radiation (EMR) readings and videos of the hive entrances of six bee hives …

Gradient Generating Microfluidic Coculture System For Disease Modeling And Neural Development, Phaneendra Chennampally

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cellular microenvironment or cell niche plays an important role in developmental biology and disease pathophysiology. Physical or chemical signals in microenvironment drive the cellular activity. These signaling molecules are generated from the surrounding cells/tissues as part of intercellular communication; a fundamental property of a cell. Dynamic profile of these signaling molecules in the microenvironment plays a pivotal role in transfer of molecular information from cell to cell in disease proliferation or fate determination. Recapitulating these signaling cues in an in vitro study is difficult to achieve using standard cell culture techniques. However microfluidic systems are capable of addressing these issues, …

Coupled Model Sea Surface Temperature Biases And Their Influence On Tropical Cyclone Environmental Conditions In An Atmospheric General Circulation Model, Hunter Tubbs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Most climate models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, Phase 5 (CMIP5) struggle to accurately simulate all aspects of the climatological global sea surface temperature (SST) distribution, especially in regions of coastal and equatorial upwelling. Of particular interest in this thesis are coupled model SST biases in the tropics and their potential influence on environmental conditions associated with tropical cyclone (TC) genesis and intensity. To evaluate this, two atmospheric general circulation models (AGCMs), the ECHAM5 and CAM5, were employed, first to examine their ability to capture observed TC characteristics when forced with observed SSTs (control runs) and then by …

Soil Gypsum Content Analysis Of The Proposed Road Route Extension Of Fm 2185 In The Gypsum Plain, Culberson County, Texas, Chikaodili Ohakawa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Soils serve as the underlying substrate on which foundations for most structures are built. The properties of a soil type are therefore an important consideration in building engineered structures. Gypsic soils are problematic for construction of such structures. One of the main problems with gypsic soils is dissolution. Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) in soils dissolves easily creating voids which can be detrimental to the integrity of engineering structures. To mitigate this, it is important to determine the amount of gypsum present in soils, before construction is initiated.

In this study, three methods were employed in the determination of …

8th Position Bodipy Chemistry, Laura I. Saucedo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The projects examined in this dissertation demonstrate how the meso substituents N and S lone pair-BODIPY core interaction influence the chemistry and properties of BODIPY fluorophores. Three objectives were completed experimentally and computationally. In the first project the meso amide substituent delocalizes the nitrogen lone pair into the carbonyl, preventing a hemicyanine resonance that causes blue emission in 8-amino-BODIPYs. The second and third projects substituting aniline or phenylthiol derivatives onto the 8th position, respectively. The aniline and phenylthio lone pair interaction with the BODIPY core can be modulated by electron-donating (ED) or –withdrawing (EW) moieties placed para on the aryl …

Evaluating The Biological Activities Of Novel Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors (Hdaci) In Adherent And Nonadherent Tumor Cell Lines, Samer Alanani Dec 2021

Evaluating The Biological Activities Of Novel Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors (Hdaci) In Adherent And Nonadherent Tumor Cell Lines, Samer Alanani

Theses and Dissertations

Epigenetic dysregulations are linked to many human diseases including neurodegenerative disorders, immunodeficiencies, cardiac disease, and most notably cancer. Changes in the mechanisms of histone modifications have been recognized as hallmarks of carcinogenesis. One of these modifications is histone acetylation which is regulated by the activities of histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs). The reversible actions of these enzymes govern the acetylome and maintain its balance allowing for activation and repression of gene transcription. However, aberrant overexpression of HDACs in certain tumors is associated with decreased levels of transcription leading to tumor progression and survival. Hence, small-molecule histone deacetylase inhibitors …

Triple Oxygen Isotope Constraints On Atmospheric O2 And Biological Productivity During The Mid-Proterozoic, Peng Liu, Jingjin Liu, Aoshaung Ji, Christopher T. Reinhard, Noah J. Planavsky, Dmitri Babikov, Raymond G. Najjar, James F. Kasting

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Reconstructing the history of biological productivity and atmospheric oxygen partial pressure (pO2) is a fundamental goal of geobiology. Recently, the mass-independent fractionation of oxygen isotopes (O-MIF) has been used as a tool for estimating pO2 and productivity during the Proterozoic. O-MIF, reported as Δ′17O, is produced during the formation of ozone and destroyed by isotopic exchange with water by biological and chemical processes. Atmospheric O-MIF can be preserved in the geologic record when pyrite (FeS2) is oxidized during weathering, and the sulfur is redeposited as sulfate. Here, sedimentary sulfates from …

2d Covalent Organic Frameworks With An Incorporated Manganese Complex For Light Driven Carbon Dioxide Reduction, Denan Wang, Daniel Streater, Yun Peng, Jier Huang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have emerged as a novel class of crystalline porous photocatalytic materials due to their unique properties such as large surface area, tunable porosity, and rigid structure. In this work, we report the direct incorporation of a manganese CO2 molecular catalyst (MC) into COFs (Mn−TTA-COF) and the evaluation of its capability as photocatalyst for visible light driven CO2 reduction to form CO. We found that the photocatalytic activity of Mn−TTA-COF is quite low, which mainly results from the elimination of the CO ligand in the Mn MC upon light illumination, rendering its short duration in …

An Extension Of Asgeirsson's Mean Value Theorem For Solutions Of The Ultra-Hyperbolic Equation In Dimension Four, Guillem Cobos, Brendan Guilfoyle Dec 2021

An Extension Of Asgeirsson's Mean Value Theorem For Solutions Of The Ultra-Hyperbolic Equation In Dimension Four, Guillem Cobos, Brendan Guilfoyle

Publications

In 1937 Asgeirsson established a mean value property for solutions of the general ultra-hyperbolic equation in 2n variables. In the case of four variables, it states that the integrals of a solution over certain pairs of conjugate circles are the same. In this paper we extend this result to non-degenerate conjugate conics, which include the original case of conjugate circles and adds the new case of conjugate hyperbolae. The broader context of this result is the geometrization of Fritz John’s 1938 analysis of the ultra-hyperbolic equation. Solutions of the equation arise as the compatibility for functions on line space to …

American Burying Beetle, Plant Richness, And Soil Property Responses To Collapse Of Juniperus Virginiana Woodlands With Fire, Alison Ludwig

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Grasslands are declining in the Great Plains due to land use changes, woody plant encroachment, and loss of historic fire cycles. Prescribed burn associations have utilized prescribed fire to collapse invading woodlands and allow the restoration of grasslands. This fire is considered “extreme” because it is capable of changing the structure and function of an ecosystem. Our study site is the Loess Canyons Experimental Landscape, a long-term, ecoregion-scale experiment to apply prescribed fire across the region to restore grasslands. The Nebraska Natural Legacy Project established the Loess Canyons ecoregion as a Biologically-Unique Landscape in 2005 with the state’s wildlife action …
