Millipyde: A Cross-Platform Python Framework For Transparent Gpu Acceleration, James B. Asbury Dec 2021

Millipyde: A Cross-Platform Python Framework For Transparent Gpu Acceleration, James B. Asbury

Master's Theses

The prevalence of general-purpose GPU computing continues to grow and tackle a wider variety of problems that benefit from GPU-acceleration. This acceleration often suffers from a high barrier to entry, however, due to the complexity of software tools that closely map to the underlying GPU hardware, the fast-changing landscape of GPU environments, and the fragmentation of tools and languages that only support specific platforms. Because of this, new solutions will continue to be needed to make GPGPU acceleration more accessible to the developers that can benefit from it. AMD’s new cross-platform development ecosystem ROCm provides promise for developing applications and …

Plant Disease Detection Through Convolutional Neural Networks: A Survey Of Existing Literature, Best Practices, And Implementation, Kevin Label Dec 2021

Plant Disease Detection Through Convolutional Neural Networks: A Survey Of Existing Literature, Best Practices, And Implementation, Kevin Label

Master's Theses

In the United States alone, common diseases spread among plants account for billions of dollars lost in crop yield each year. This issue is exacerbated in countries with less infrastructure to defend against crop epidemics, and can lead to famine and forced migration. Farmers can seek the help of plant pathology experts to defend against diseases and detect crop irregularities early on. However, access to experts can be difficult, and even those trained in the field may miss symptoms before it is too late. To assist in early disease detection, a number of papers have been released on the potential …

Adapting Single-View View Synthesis With Multiplane Images For 3d Video Chat, Anurag Venkata Uppuluri

Master's Theses

Activities like one-on-one video chatting and video conferencing with multiple participants are more prevalent than ever today as we continue to tackle the pandemic. Bringing a 3D feel to video chat has always been a hot topic in Vision and Graphics communities. In this thesis, we have employed novel view synthesis in attempting to turn one-on-one video chatting into 3D. We have tuned the learning pipeline of Tucker and Snavely's single-view view synthesis paper — by retraining it on MannequinChallenge dataset — to better predict a layered representation of the scene viewed by either video chat participant at any given …

Vorticity And Kinematic Analysis Of The Cordillera Blanca Shear Zone, Peru, Corey Flynn Dec 2021

Vorticity And Kinematic Analysis Of The Cordillera Blanca Shear Zone, Peru, Corey Flynn

Masters Theses

Quantitative vorticity analyses applied to naturally deformed rocks are essential for studying kinematics in shear zones and can be performed using a range of methods, which have been developed over the last two decades. An understanding of vorticity, or the contribution of pure vs. simple shear, can permit for the modeling of shear zone development in a deformed region. Recent (5 Ma-present) deformation in the Cordillera Blanca Shear Zone of the Peruvian Andes has exposed sections of the middle crust at the surface, allowing for observation and analysis of shear zone processes. Oblique grain-shape (OGS) analysis and crystallographic vorticity analysis …

On The Mobility Of Small Aperture Telescopes For Initial Orbit Determination And Apparent Magnitude Derivation Of Low Earth Satellites, Jonathan Ian Hernandez Dec 2021

On The Mobility Of Small Aperture Telescopes For Initial Orbit Determination And Apparent Magnitude Derivation Of Low Earth Satellites, Jonathan Ian Hernandez

Master's Theses

Maintaining Space Domain Awareness (SDA) of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) requires effective methods of tracking and characterization. Optical measurements of these objects are generally sparse due to limited access intervals and high angular rates. Light pollution and geographic obstructions may also preclude consistent observations. However, a mobile small aperture telescope grants the ability to minimize such environmental effects, thereby increasing capture likelihoods for objects within this regime. By enhancing LEO satellite visibility in this way, extensive orbital and visual data are obtainable.

An 8-inch Meade LX200GPS telescope equipped with a Lumenera SKYnyx2-0M CCD camera comprises the system that …

Regulating New Tech: Problems, Pathways, And People, Cary Coglianese Dec 2021

Regulating New Tech: Problems, Pathways, And People, Cary Coglianese

All Faculty Scholarship

New technologies bring with them many promises, but also a series of new problems. Even though these problems are new, they are not unlike the types of problems that regulators have long addressed in other contexts. The lessons from regulation in the past can thus guide regulatory efforts today. Regulators must focus on understanding the problems they seek to address and the causal pathways that lead to these problems. Then they must undertake efforts to shape the behavior of those in industry so that private sector managers focus on their technologies’ problems and take actions to interrupt the causal pathways. …

Neurolkh: Combining Deep Learning Model With Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun Heuristic For Solving The Traveling Salesman Problem, Liang Xin, Wen Song, Zhiguang Cao, Jie Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present NeuroLKH, a novel algorithm that combines deep learning with the strong traditional heuristic Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun (LKH) for solving Traveling Salesman Problem. Specifically, we train a Sparse Graph Network (SGN) with supervised learning for edge scores and unsupervised learning for node penalties, both of which are critical for improving the performance of LKH. Based on the output of SGN, NeuroLKH creates the edge candidate set and transforms edge distances to guide the searching process of LKH. Extensive experiments firmly demonstrate that, by training one model on a wide range of problem sizes, NeuroLKH significantly outperforms LKH and generalizes well to …

Measure And Integration, Jeonghwan Lee

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Measure and Integral are important when dealing with abstract spaces such as function spaces and probability spaces. This thesis will cover Lebesgue Measure and Lebesgue integral. The Lebesgue integral is a generalized theory of Riemann integral learned in mathematics. The Riemann integral is centered on the domain of the function, but the Lebesgue integral is different in that it is centered on the range of the function, and uses the basic concept of analysis. Measure and integral have widely applied not only to mathematics but also to other fields.

Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman Dec 2021

Towards Long Term Colloid Suspension In A Vertically Rotated System., Md Mahmudur Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Within a colloidal suspension gravity may compromise the observation of governing physical interactions, especially those that are weak and/or take significant time to develop. Conducting the experiment in a long-term microgravity environment is a viable option to negate gravitational effects, though significant resources are required to do so. While it may not be possible to simulate long-term microgravity terrestrially, particles can resist quick sedimentation in a confined suspension system rotating vertically with appropriate rotation speed. The goal of the investigation is to demonstrate the existence of long-term particle suspension regime for a certain colloidal suspension while characterizing colloidal behavior due …

Local Feature Selection For Multiple Instance Learning With Applications., Aliasghar Shahrjooihaghighi Dec 2021

Local Feature Selection For Multiple Instance Learning With Applications., Aliasghar Shahrjooihaghighi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Feature selection is a data processing approach that has been successfully and effectively used in developing machine learning algorithms for various applications. It has been proven to effectively reduce the dimensionality of the data and increase the accuracy and interpretability of machine learning algorithms. Conventional feature selection algorithms assume that there is an optimal global subset of features for the whole sample space. Thus, only one global subset of relevant features is learned. An alternative approach is based on the concept of Local Feature Selection (LFS), where each training sample can have its own subset of relevant features. Multiple Instance …

Estimating Treatment Effect On Medical Cost And Examining Medical Cost Trajectory Using Splines And Change Point Techniques., Indranil Ghosh Dec 2021

Estimating Treatment Effect On Medical Cost And Examining Medical Cost Trajectory Using Splines And Change Point Techniques., Indranil Ghosh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the world of growing medical needs, other than the clinical outcomes, the cost of healthcare is one of the important aspects to evaluate. The cost of treatment could act as a decisive factor on which one to choose from two equally likely effective treatment options. In literature, the most used quantity for the cost of treatment is cumulative lifetime cost since the diagnosis of a disease. While it provides a bird' eye view of the treatment cost, it fails to capture the underlying pattern of the treatment cost trajectory. We developed a marginal structural functional model (MSFM) using an …

Decisive Neutrality, Restricted Decisive Neutrality, And Split Decisive Neutrality On Median Semilattices And Median Graphs., Ulf Högnäs

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Consensus functions on finite median semilattices and finite median graphs are studied from an axiomatic point of view. We start with a new axiomatic characterization of majority rule on a large class of median semilattices we call sufficient. A key axiom in this result is the restricted decisive neutrality condition. This condition is a restricted version of the more well-known axiom of decisive neutrality given in [4]. Our theorem is an extension of the main result given in [7]. Another main result is a complete characterization of the class of consensus on a finite median semilattice that satisfies the axioms …

Hybrid Feature Selection Approach To Identify Optimal Features Of Profile Metadata To Detect Social Bots In Twitter, Eiman Alothali, Kadhim Hayawi, Hany Alashwal

All Works

The last few years have revealed that social bots in social networks have become more sophisticated in design as they adapt their features to avoid detection systems. The deceptive nature of bots to mimic human users is due to the advancement of artificial intelligence and chatbots, where these bots learn and adjust very quickly. Therefore, finding the optimal features needed to detect them is an area for further investigation. In this paper, we propose a hybrid feature selection (FS) method to evaluate profile metadata features to find these optimal features, which are evaluated using random forest, naïve Bayes, support vector …
