Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Harmful algal and bacterial blooms linked to deforestation, soil loss and global warming are increasingly frequent in lakes and rivers. We demonstrate that climate changes and deforestation can drive recurrent microbial blooms, inhibiting the recovery of freshwater ecosystems for hundreds of millennia. From the stratigraphic successions of the Sydney Basin, Australia, our fossil, sedimentary and geochemical data reveal bloom events following forest ecosystem collapse during the most severe mass extinction in Earth’s history, the end- Permian event (EPE; c. 252.2 Ma). Microbial communities proliferated in lowland fresh and brackish waterbodies, with algal concentrations typical of modern blooms. These initiated before …

Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Models and simulation engines provide services mainly in the format of executable files in cloud environment, thus plug-in-play pattern becomes the first choice of simulation, which needs necessitating interfaces to connect the model processing logics and the simulation engine control logics. A set of simulation object interfaces that covers the simulation full life cycle of initialization, event scheduling, processing and cancel, publish and processing of subscription, roll-back and termination is proposed, and then defined in C++ language. Two examples show the process of the interfaces and the effectiveness of constructing the simulation objects. With the instantiation and disposal …

Exploring Formal Model Transformation Techniques Within Model Driven Engineering, Zhu Zhi, Lei Sen, Yonglin Lei
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: With the increasing complexity of simulation system and the wide use of simulation models, the higher requirements of the efficiency and quality for simulation models are needed. Currently, model-driven engineering is mostly applied in many simulation software tools, which cannot really carry out the formal analysis at the model level. Based on model driven engineering, the domain specific language with metamodeling and engineering model continuity is designed. Taking a group fire control channel system as the example, the domain specific language is designed and the conceptual models are transformed into other precise semantics to carry out the final executable …

Using data samples of 89.5 and 711 fb-1 recorded at energies of s=10.52 and 10.58 GeV, respectively, with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider, we report measurements of branching fractions of semileptonic decays Ξc0→Ξ-ℓ+νℓ (ℓ=e or μ) and the CP-asymmetry parameter of Ξc0→Ξ-π+ decay. The branching fractions are measured to be B(Ξc0→Ξ-e+νe)=(1.31±0.04±0.07±0.38)% and B(Ξc0→Ξ-μ+νμ)=(1.27±0.06±0.10±0.37)%, and the decay parameter αΞπ is measured to be 0.63±0.03±0.01 with much improved precision compared with the current world average. The corresponding ratio B(Ξc0→Ξ-e+νe)/B(Ξc0→Ξ-μ+νμ) is 1.03±0.05±0.07, which is consistent with the expectation of lepton flavor universality. The first measured asymmetry parameter ACP=(αΞ-π++αΞ¯+π-)/(αΞ-π+-αΞ¯+π-)=0.024±0.052±0.014 is found …

World Health Organization (WHO) identified twenty tropical disease categories as neglected tropical diseases (NTDs)1. Chagas’ disease (also known as American trypanosomiasis) and leishmaniasis are two major classes of NTDs. The total number of mortality, morbidity, and disability attributed each year due to these two categories of diseases in magnitudes is much higher than the so-called elite diseases like cancer, diabetes, AIDS, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases. Impoverished communities around the world are the major victim of NTDs. The development of new and novel drugs in the battle against Chagas’ disease and leishmaniasis is highly anticipated. An easy and straightforward …

Learning In Convolutional Neural Networks Accelerated By Transfer Entropy, Adrian Moldovan, Angel Caţaron, Răzvan Andonie
Computer Science Faculty Scholarship
Recently, there is a growing interest in applying Transfer Entropy (TE) in quantifying the effective connectivity between artificial neurons. In a feedforward network, the TE can be used to quantify the relationships between neuron output pairs located in different layers. Our focus is on how to include the TE in the learning mechanisms of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architecture. We introduce a novel training mechanism for CNN architectures which integrates the TE feedback connections. Adding the TE feedback parameter accelerates the training process, as fewer epochs are needed. On the flip side, it adds computational overhead to each epoch. …

Workers’ Attitudes Toward Increased Surveillance During And After The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jessica Vitak, Michael Zimmer
Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the transition of many offices to remote work has led to new ways for employers to track workers’ movements, behavior, and productivity. Through their SSRC-funded research, Jessica Vitak and Michael Zimmer surveyed remote workers in the US about perceptions of current workplace monitoring practices. They argue that worker concerns about reductions in privacy and independence at work might have negative outcomes on worker productivity, satisfaction, and well-being.

We characterize commutative idempotent involutive residuated lattices as disjoint unions of Boolean algebras arranged over a distributive lattice. We use this description to introduce a new construction, called gluing, that allows us to build new members of this variety from other ones. In particular, all finite members can be constructed in this way from Boolean algebras. Finally, we apply our construction to prove that the fusion reduct of any finite member is a distributive semilattice, and to show that this variety is not locally finite.

infer implements an expressive grammar to perform statistical inference that adheres to the tidyverse design framework (Wickham et al., 2019). Rather than providing methods for specific statistical tests, this package consolidates the principles that are shared among common hypothesis tests and confidence intervals into a set of four main verbs (functions), supplemented with many utilities to visualize and extract value from their outputs.

The HD molecule is an important coolant in early universe chemistry models and a tracer of H2 in star-forming regions. Rate coefficients for collisional excitation and de-excitation of HD rotational and vibrational levels form important ingredients in astrophysical models. While collisions with He, H2, and H are the most important, available data for H + HD collisions are largely limited to temperatures less than 1000 K for the vibrational ground state, low-lying rotational levels of the v = 1 HD vibrational level, or computed without reactive contributions. Here, through explicit quantum scattering calculations, we report extensive data for rovibrational transitions …
