Evolution Of A Deep Fluid In A Surficial Environment Using Stable Isotopes Of Carbon And Sulfur: Case Of The Transitional Section Of The Edwards Aquifer, Abongwa T. Pride, Walter Den

Water Resources Science and Technology Faculty Publications

The Edwards Aquifer in south central Texas (USA) features a distinct fault line defining the freshwater and saline water zones. We aim to elucidate the evolutionary behavior of carbon and sulfur emanating from deep environments and flowing in surficial environment so as to better understand the cycling of these metals in water environments. To characterize the evolution of carbon and sulfur species in surficial environment as the fluid emanates from a deep saline aquifer, we monitored the chemical and isotopic (δ13CDIC and δ34SSO4) parameters over a 700-m stretch on a streampond system situated on the saline-freshwater line of the Edwards …

Roller Coaster Acceleration, Olivia Briggs May 2021

Roller Coaster Acceleration, Olivia Briggs

Honors Program Theses and Projects

In classical mechanics, Newton’s Second Law (NSL) is often used when talking about acceleration. NSL states that the acceleration of an object is directly related to the net force and inversely related to its mass. It can be written as F~ = m~a. This concept can be applied to many real life situations, one of them being roller coasters. Passengers on roller coasters can accelerate in all directions. Some accelerations are due to gravity while others are due to launch systems that apply a mechanical force to a train. Roller coasters are often described by how many G forces riders …

Enhanced Atmospheric Oxidation Capacity And Associated Ozone Increases During Covid-19 Lockdown In The Yangtze River Delta, Yu Wang, Shengqiang Zhu, Jinlong Ma, Juanyong Shen, Pengfei Wang, Peng Wang, Hongliang Zhang

Faculty Publications

Aggressive air pollution control in China since 2013 has achieved sharp decreases in fine particulate matter (PM2.5), along with increased ozone (O-3) concentrations. Due to the pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), China imposed nationwide restriction, leading to large reductions in economic activities and associated emissions. In particular, large decreases were found in nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions (>50%) from transportation. However, O-3 increased in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), which cannot be fully explained by changes in NOx and volatile organic compound (VOCs) emissions. In this study, the Community Multi-scale Air Quality model was used to investigate O-3 increase …

Federated Learning For Secure Sensor Cloud, Viraaji Mothukuri May 2021

Federated Learning For Secure Sensor Cloud, Viraaji Mothukuri

Master of Science in Software Engineering Theses

Intelligent sensing solutions bridge the gap between the physical world and the cyber world by digitizing the sensor data collected from sensor devices. Sensor cloud networks provide resources to physical and virtual sensing devices and enable uninterrupted intelligent solutions to end-users. Thanks to advancements in machine learning algorithms and big data, the automation of mundane tasks with artificial intelligence is becoming a more reliable smart option. However, existing approaches based on centralized Machine Learning (ML) on sensor cloud networks fail to ensure data privacy. Moreover, centralized ML works with the pre-requisite to have the entire training dataset from end-devices transferred …

The Social Market Economy As A Formula For Peace, Prosperity, And Sustainability, Almuth D. Merkel May 2021

The Social Market Economy As A Formula For Peace, Prosperity, And Sustainability, Almuth D. Merkel

Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations

The social market economy was developed in Germany during the interwar period amidst political and economic turmoil. With clear demarcation lines differentiating it from socialism and laissez-faire capitalism, the social market economy became a formula for peace and prosperity for post WWII Germany. Since then, the success of the social market economy has inspired many other countries to adopt its principles. Drawing on evidence from economic history and the history of economic thought, this thesis first reviews the evolution of the fundamental principles that form the foundation of social-market economic thought. Blending the micro-economic utility maximization framework with traditional growth …

Comparison Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors Between Coves Of Varying Connection To Harlan County Reservoir, Nebraska, Brian Edward Mason May 2021

Comparison Of Abiotic And Biotic Factors Between Coves Of Varying Connection To Harlan County Reservoir, Nebraska, Brian Edward Mason

Biology Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

Sediment berms of various heights have developed in the mouths of several coves within Harlan County Reservoir due to a combination of sediment deposition and lateral drift of eroded sediments. These berms can isolate coves from the main reservoir if the berm height is greater than the water elevation of the reservoir. Disconnection of coves may impact water quality, zooplankton, and fish within the isolated reservoir habitats. This study will examine differences in water quality parameters, zooplankton communities, and fish assemblages between disconnected coves, connected coves and the main reservoir. Water quality parameters related to water clarity and productivity differed …

Designing A Reactive Warhead To Bind And Inhibit Pseudomonas Aeruginosa’S Periplasmic Protein, Inhibitor Of Vertebrate Lysozyme, Leah Greinke May 2021

Designing A Reactive Warhead To Bind And Inhibit Pseudomonas Aeruginosa’S Periplasmic Protein, Inhibitor Of Vertebrate Lysozyme, Leah Greinke

Master of Science in Chemical Sciences Theses

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram-negative bacterium commonly found throughout the environment. It is a significant cause of disease and mortality in immunodeficient patients such as those suffering from cystic fibrosis (CF). Due to the emerging antibiotic resistance of P. aeruginosa, it is becoming increasingly more challenging to treat an infection by traditional means. Further complicating treatment, P. aeruginosa secretes a protein known as Inhibitor of Vertebrate Lysozyme (PaIVY) that binds to and inhibits C-type lysozyme, thus preventing the degradation of the bacterium. A reactive chemical warhead was synthesized from a rhenium(I) tricarbonyl derivative inorder to bind to and irreversibly …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Overpopulation of free-roaming cats is a major problem leading to negative impacts on animal health and welfare, public nuisance, transmission of zoonotic diseases, and well-documented harm to wildlife. Surgical sterilization had failed to provide a practical solution to free-roaming cats’ overpopulation under field conditions; therefore, efficient and safe non-surgical immunocontraception methods are aspired. Rabies is a deadly virus that may infect people and animals. However, the safety and efficacy of combined vaccination with anti-GnRH and rabies vaccines in feral cats, which often suffer from disrupted health conditions and experienced high stress level, has never been studied. Therefore, our objective was …

Study Of Parity Sheaves Arising From Graded Lie Algebras, Tamanna Chatterjee May 2021

Study Of Parity Sheaves Arising From Graded Lie Algebras, Tamanna Chatterjee

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Let $G$ be a complex, connected, reductive, algebraic group, and $\chi:\mb{C}^\times \to G$ be a fixed cocharacter that defines a grading on $\mf{g}$, the Lie algebra of $G$. Let $G_0$ be the centralizer of $\chi(\mb{C}^\times)$. In this dissertation, we study $G_0$-equivariant parity sheaves on $\mf{g}_n$, under some assumptions on the field $\Bbbk$ and the group $G$. The assumption on $G$ holds for $GL_n$ and for any $G$, it recovers results of Lusztig\cite{Lu} in characteristic $0$. The main result is that every parity sheaf occurs as a direct summand of the parabolic induction of some cuspidal pair.
