Digital Banking Accelerator: A Service-Oriented Architecture Starter Kit For Banks, Alan @ Ali Madjelisi Megargel, Shankararaman, Venky
Digital Banking Accelerator: A Service-Oriented Architecture Starter Kit For Banks, Alan @ Ali Madjelisi Megargel, Shankararaman, Venky
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Digital banking refers to the delivery of interactive financial services through online mechanisms which include web and mobile apps. The main barrier to digital banking for traditional banks, is the presence of legacy core banking systems. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is a key enabler to overcome this barrier, and a bank’s level of SOA maturity influences its time-to-market capability of delivering new innovative digital banking solutions. However, most traditional banks struggle with implementing an SOA due to a number of technology and organizational challenges, and the overall steep learning curve. This paper proposes a Digital Banking Accelerator, a “starter kit” …
Design And Synthesis Of Polymeric Metastable State Photoacid And Photo Co-Releasing Materials, Adnan Abdallah Muftah Elgattar
Design And Synthesis Of Polymeric Metastable State Photoacid And Photo Co-Releasing Materials, Adnan Abdallah Muftah Elgattar
Theses and Dissertations
Metastable state photoacids (mPAHs) are molecules that possess a photoinduced metastable state with high acidity and good reversibility. The metastable state lasts long enough to produce a high proton concentration, which can drive various proton transfer processes. MPAHs have been intensively studied in recent years and applied to different chemical, material, biomedical areas. Covalently linking many mPAHs in a polymer allows the generation of a local proton concentration higher than that of the overall system. This dissertation described my PhD work on the synthesis of mPAH polymers using different radical and ring-opening polymerization methods. These polymers can repeatedly produce a …

Many bacteria demonstrate population-density dependent gene expression, a phenomenon known as quorum sensing, to regulate phenotypes that, if expressed by an individual bacterium, would be ineffective. While some of these phenotypes are innocuous (e.g., exhibiting bioluminescence), certain bacteria employ quorum sensing regulated phenotypes in their pathogenesis. Traditionally, infections by these pathogens have been treated with antibiotic therapies. However, with the emergence of multidrug resistant strains, alternative strategies are being considered for attenuation of quorum sensing regulated traits that do not apply selective pressures. Macrocycles — in particular the cyclodextrins — that are capable of forming inclusion complexes with Gram-negative quorum …
Additive Noise Subtraction For Environmental Noise In Speech Recognition, Noof Nour Alrouqi
Additive Noise Subtraction For Environmental Noise In Speech Recognition, Noof Nour Alrouqi
Theses and Dissertations
Nowadays, technology encourages human beings to communicate by speech via quick voice notes through applications on cell phones. Environmental real white stationary noises impact speech intelligibility, cause the underperformance of voice production, create unclear speech recordings, and produce a disordered voice with problematic characteristics from the environmental real noises. This thesis addresses noise reduction and its major challenges, techniques, and evaluation methods and investigates relative literature by conducting a systematic classification and analyses of the selected papers, thereby proposing a framework based on additive noise subtraction for environmental-noise speech recognition called the ANSESR framework, which is supported with an automated …

Characterizing The Demographic Effects Relative To Race, Gender, And Skin Tone On The Accuracy Of Deep Convolutional Neural Network Based Face Recognition Systems, Krishnapriya Kottakkal Sugathan
Theses and Dissertations
Automated face recognition (AFR) is an important tool used in national security and public safety operations. Numerous cases exist in which AFR was successfully used to search large repositories containing millions of face images, such as identifying a suspect in a mass shooting, a victim of a crime, or even a person attempting to acquire a driver’s license under an assumed identity fraudulently. However, concerns have been raised about how this technology impacts privacy and civil liberty. The studies from the Georgetown Law Center on Privacy and Technology and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have noted different rates of …

Ground Truth: Towards Labeling On-Demand Iot Traffic, Daniel Jordan Campos
Theses and Dissertations
A lack of transparency has accompanied the rapid proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To this end, a growing body of work exists to classify IoT device traffic to identify unexpected or surreptitious device activity. However, this work requires fine-grained labeled datasets of device activity. This paper proposes a holistic approach for IoT device traffic collection and automated event labeling. Our work paves the way for future research by thoroughly examining different techniques for synthesizing and labeling on-demand traffic from IoT sensors and actuators. To demonstrate this approach, we instrumented a smart home environment consisting of 57 IoT devices …
Examining Summertime Melt And Temperatures In The North Pacific Cordillera, Ingalise Kindstedt
Examining Summertime Melt And Temperatures In The North Pacific Cordillera, Ingalise Kindstedt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Temperature changes in glaciated regions are of immediate concern for estimates of future sea level rise. Alaska and the surrounding region contain over 40 mm of potential sea level rise in its many alpine glaciers, which are experiencing some of the highest rates of mass loss globally. However, records of both past and present temperatures in the region’s alpine sectors are sparse and limited in temporal and spatial extent. Here I examine the application of MODIS land surface temperatures and layers of refrozen melt in ice cores as temperature indicators in the St. Elias and Alaska Ranges. First, I find …

Structural Re-Orientation Of Magmatic Fabrics And Layering In The Lower Oceanic Crust: Hole Gt1, Wadi Tayin Massif, Samail Ophiolite, Justin Guillot
Master's Theses
This thesis aims to re-orient borehole images of layered gabbros sampled beneath Hole GT1 in the Wadi Tayin massif of the Oman ophiolite by the Oman Drilling Project to better constrain models of crustal accretion. The gabbro glacier model proposes that crystallized basalt flows down and away from the crystallization site to form the lower crust while the sheeted sill model proposes that basaltic melt crystallizes at multiple levels in the crust through sills. Hole GT1 provides an unprecedented 400 m, 100% recovery, look at the lower oceanic crust. Cores lose their geographic orientation when drilled, requiring use of the …
Small-Scale Resuspension And Redistribution Of Surface Sediments In The Northeast Gulf Of Mexico, Austin Harris
Small-Scale Resuspension And Redistribution Of Surface Sediments In The Northeast Gulf Of Mexico, Austin Harris
Master's Theses
Following the release of ~4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico from the Macondo wellhead, a vast area of the seafloor contained recently deposited marine sediments contaminated by the oil spill. The initial deposition of these contaminated marine sediments was likely not the end of the journey for the particles. Downslope gravitational processes and events of increased current speed in the deep ocean setting can result in recently deposited sediments to resuspend and be moved laterally with the current flow, increasing the area effected by the oil spill. Erosion experiments performed in a closed-loop resuspension flume were …
Evaluating Marsh Restoration Success Using Structural And Trophic Metrics On Deer Island, Ms, Emelia Marshall
Evaluating Marsh Restoration Success Using Structural And Trophic Metrics On Deer Island, Ms, Emelia Marshall
Master's Theses
Coastal marshes in the northern Gulf of Mexico provide essential habitat for various consumer species, however, land loss has severely degraded marsh habitat in this region. Few studies have examined restored black needlerush (Juncus roemerianus) marshes, such as those found in Mississippi (MS), and how they affect faunal inhabitants.
Restoration of Juncus-dominated marshes on Deer Island, MS sought to reestablish ecological functions with the intention of supporting natural consumer assemblages. To test this, quadrat and minnow trap sampling were used to compare invertebrate and nekton abundance, species richness, and diversity of two restored marshes (5+ yrs and …
Application Of Machine Learning Techniques To Forecast Harmful Algal Blooms In Gulf Of Mexico, Bala Tripura Sundari Yerrapothu
Application Of Machine Learning Techniques To Forecast Harmful Algal Blooms In Gulf Of Mexico, Bala Tripura Sundari Yerrapothu
Master's Theses
The Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) forecast is crucial for the mitigation of health hazards and to inform actions for the protection of ecosystems and fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM). For the sake of simplicity of our application we assume ocean color satellite imagery from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as a proxy for HABs.
In this study we use a deep neural network trained on the 2-Dimensional time series proxy data to provide a forecast of the HABs’ manifestations in the GoM.Our approach analyzes between both spatial and temporal features simultaneously. In addition, the network also helps …

This research addressed the amount of electric power required to induce specific changes in lift force using a NACA 2127 airfoil with a chord length of ~28 mm, connected to a micro load cell, in a wind tunnel of 103 square centimeter cross-section. A DBD plasma actuator supplied by a ZVS driven high voltage pulsed DC circuit, operating at a frequency of 17.4 kHz, was utilized for voltages of up to 5000 V. Two configurations of electrode gapping were compared to determine the efficient use of power. The configuration with a gap of ~1 mm between the upstream and downstream …
Orbital Dynamics And Stability Of Circumbinary Planetary Systems And Small Bodies In The Solar System, Cheng Chen
Orbital Dynamics And Stability Of Circumbinary Planetary Systems And Small Bodies In The Solar System, Cheng Chen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
My main research focuses on the dynamics and stability of circumbinary planetary systems and of small bodies in the solar system. Unlike the two-body problem, the three-body problem is more complex as there are stronger interactions with two massive bodies in the system. In the outer solar system, the apsidal precession secular resonance with Neptune makes comets in the Kuiper belt unstable in the early stages of the solar system. This resonance a likely origin for the nitrogen-delivering comets that impacted the Earth bringing some of the nitrogen in the Earth’s atmosphere today. Beyond the solar system, we have observed …
Comparing A New Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem To Previous Deterministic And Stochastic Algorithms, Edward Friesema
Comparing A New Algorithm For The Traveling Salesman Problem To Previous Deterministic And Stochastic Algorithms, Edward Friesema
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The challenges of drone navigation have driven many advances in the development of autonomous systems. Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles(UAVs) operate in a rapidly changing flight space and have to balance a complex set of constraints and objectives. Many of these objectives can be represented in variations of the classic Traveling Salesman Problem. Numerous approximate solutions to TSP have been proposed over the years, but these approaches have difficulty when adding new constraints that require rapid recalculation of the solution. Either they are fast but do not provide solutions that are close to the optimum, or they provide excellent solutions but they …

An Introduction To Federated Learning And Its Analysis, Manjari Ganapathy
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
With the onset of the digital era, data privacy is one of the most predominant issues. Decentralized learning is becoming popular as the data can remain within local entities by maintaining privacy. Federated Learning is a decentralized machine learning approach, where multiple clients collaboratively learn a model, without sharing raw data. There are many practical challenges in solving Federated Learning, which include communication set up, data heterogeneity and computational capacity of clients. In this thesis, I explore recent methods of Federated Learning with various settings, such as data distributions and data variability, used in several applications. In addition, I, specifically, …
Exploring The Choiceless Cardinal Hierarchy, David Linkletter
Exploring The Choiceless Cardinal Hierarchy, David Linkletter
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In 1971, Kunen proved that the Axiom of Choice imposes a ceiling on the large cardinal hierarchy [7]. Much like the assumption V ≠ L unlocks measurable cardinals and beyond, dropping the Axiom of Choice enables Reinhardt cardinals and stronger cardinals to be explored. Some major notions of large cardinals beyond choice have recently been standardized by Woodin et. al. [2], with questions raised regarding their interconnectedness. Part 1 of this dissertation partially answers two of those questions, while conjecturing, with a partial solution, a much stronger answer which would simplify the existing cardinal charts - that Regular Berkeley Cardinals …
Food Insecurity And Risky Sexual Behaviors Among College Students, Bertille Octavie Mavegam Tango Assoumou M
Food Insecurity And Risky Sexual Behaviors Among College Students, Bertille Octavie Mavegam Tango Assoumou M
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Food insecurity and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are growing public health problems in the United States. Young people in general, and particularly college students, exhibit high prevalence of food insecurity, STIs, and risky sexual behaviors (RSB). Food insecurity and STIs among college students can have short- and long-term impacts on their academic success and their lives. Several studies have reported an association between food insecurity and some risky sexual behaviors among specific populations including HIV-infected people and homeless people. However, little is known about the relationship between food insecurity and RSB among college students. Given the high prevalence of food …
Chronicling Magma Transit Beneath Hawaiian Volcanoes: Every Isotope A Word, Every Crystal A Story, Jonathan Pinko
Chronicling Magma Transit Beneath Hawaiian Volcanoes: Every Isotope A Word, Every Crystal A Story, Jonathan Pinko
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
At many oceanic volcanoes, such as Hawaii, mantle-derived magmas migrate to crustal level magma chambers, where they accumulate before eruption. Understanding the magma chamber residence times, or the time gaps between the arrivals of new magmas and eruptions, is important in volcanic hazard mitigation. Here I apply iron and magnesium isotope effects in olivines to constrain these times at Hawaiian volcanoes. Combined with published data, I present bulk ?56Fe (-1.706 to 0.489) and ?26Mg (-0.400 to 0.356) in 108 Hawaiian olivines erupted from the pre-shield, shield, and post-shield stages. The Hawaiian olivine ?56Fe and ?26Mg represent the largest Fe-Mg isotope …
Estimation Of Spatial Change In Cropland Area And Evaluation Of Irrigation Performance In Imperial Valley Using Remotely Sensed Data, Usha Poudel
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Imperial Valley (IV) in the US is an extensively irrigated agricultural region, which includes multiple crops changing on an annual and semiannual basis. The valley is facing grave concerns about water management due to its semi-arid environment, water intensive crops, and limited water supply. A simple, inexpensive, and repeatable method to detect changes in cropping patterns may assist irrigation managers to understand crop diversification and associated consumptive use. In addition, a spatial assessment of existing water irrigation system performance and productivity is crucial to benchmark and improve current water management strategies. This thesis estimates the spatial pattern of change …
Linking Extreme High Air Temperature Events To Wildfire And Environmental Variation To Water Balance Partitioning In The Western Us, Neil Savage
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Chapter 1
Wildfire activity has increased across the western United States in recent decades, causing significant damage to ecosystem services and human communities. The Sierra Nevada region, in particular, has experienced substantial increases in the ignition frequency, severity, and extent of large wildfires. To partly disentangle the complex processes underlying wildfire risk, I developed a simple approach to link natural wildfire ignition patterns to changing seasonal temperatures and extreme high and low air temperature events across the Sierra Nevada region from 1992—2015. Extreme event analyses focused on the association between the magnitude and frequency of occurrence of extreme temperature events …

Does Social Support Moderate The Association Between Income And Food Security Status Among Seniors Living In Southern Nevada?, Adugna Teka Siweya
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Background: Income is the strongest predictor of food insecurity among seniors, and social support also an essential factor to help mitigate the effects of food insecurity. However, little is known about the potential role that social support may play as a moderator of the association between income and food insecurity. Thus, we aim to examine social support as a moderator for the relationship between income and food insecurity among seniors. Methods: Logistic regression models were used to analyze data collected in 2019 from seniors residing in Southern Nevada. Predictors of food insecurity, sociodemographic factors, social support variables, and income and …
Accretion And Debris Disc Dynamics Around Single And Higher-Order Star Systems, Jeremy L. Smallwood
Accretion And Debris Disc Dynamics Around Single And Higher-Order Star Systems, Jeremy L. Smallwood
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
My research deals with highly topical areas of astrophysics, such as planet habitability, stellar evolution, the origin of fast radio bursts, the evolution of debris discs, and the dynamics of accretion discs in binary and higher-order star systems. Accretion discs around binary star systems are ubiquitous in the galaxy and planet formation is thought to occur within these discs. Circumbinary discs are commonly observed to be misaligned with respect to the binary orbital plane. A misaligned circumbinary disc eventually evolve to a stable orientation, either coplanar or polar with the binary orbital plane. The process of disc alignment has important …
Distributions And Habitat Associations Of Blue Point Pyrgulopsis And Blue Point Tryonia, Chenoa Janine Wilcox
Distributions And Habitat Associations Of Blue Point Pyrgulopsis And Blue Point Tryonia, Chenoa Janine Wilcox
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Springsnails and other crenophilic species are often of conservation concern due to endemism, narrow habitat requirements, and susceptibility to habitat degradation. Because there is a distinct lack of natural history information for many of these organisms, management of species that are of concern is often based on data from non-target species related to the species of interest. In this thesis, I provide background information regarding springsnails in western North America (Chapter 1), describe a study investigating the distribution and habitat associations of two springsnails endemic to a single spring (Chapter 2), and provide supplemental information on habitat characteristics associated with …
Juvenile Conifer Growth And Regeneration Across Diverse Climatic And Environmental Conditions In The Southwestern United States, Nikki L. Pirtel
Juvenile Conifer Growth And Regeneration Across Diverse Climatic And Environmental Conditions In The Southwestern United States, Nikki L. Pirtel
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Juvenile conifer germination, growth, and survival will play important roles in the persistence of coniferous forests and woodlands in the southwestern United States (SWUS), yet it is unclear how juvenile conifers allocate aboveground and belowground early growth and if growth differs between conifer and ecosystem types. Descriptions of growth characteristics may allude to the types of stress juveniles experience in their environments, how they morphologically respond to stress, and how they may be able to survive stress to persist in their current locations or expand into new areas. In Chapter 1, I described the growth characteristics of 4 juvenile conifer …
Do You Need A Break From Environmental Duties? Apply The Norm Activation Theory To Examine Pro Environmental Behaviors, Yanjia Yang
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This study aimed at examining how social environmental norms affect tourists’ pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs) in the destination and home contexts by employing the focus theory of normative conduct and norm activation theory. It also tested the moderating effects of the belief of a vacation break from environmental duties and the mediating effect of personal norms in the relationships between social-environmental norms and PEBs. A total of 400 usable surveys was collected through an online survey. Both t-test and regression analysis techniques were employed to analyze the data. There were two major findings from this study. First, PEBs became weaker when …

A Comparison Of The Localized Aviation Mos Program (Lamp) And Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (Taf) Accuracy For General Aviation, Douglas D. Boyd, Thomas A. Guinn
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Background. For general aviation (GA) pilots, operations in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) carry an elevated risk of a fatal accident. As to whether a general aviation flight can be safely undertaken, aerodrome-specific forecasts (TAF, LAMP) provide guidance. Although LAMP forecasts are more common for GA-frequented aerodromes, nevertheless, the FAA recommends that for such aerodromes (and for which a TAF is not issued) the airman uses the TAF generated for the geographically closest airport for pre-flight weather evaluation. Herein, for non-TAF-issuing airports, the LAMP (sLAMP) predictive accuracy for visual (VFR) and instrument (IFR) flight rules flight category was determined.
Method. sLAMP …

BACKGROUND: DNA methylation (DNAm) is associated with gene regulation and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), a measure of kidney function. Decreased eGFR is more common among US Hispanics and African Americans. The causes for this are poorly understood. We aimed to identify trans-ethnic and ethnic-specific differentially methylated positions (DMPs) associated with eGFR using an agnostic, genome-wide approach.
METHODS: The study included up to 5428 participants from multi-ethnic studies for discovery and 8109 participants for replication. We tested the associations between whole blood DNAm and eGFR using beta values from Illumina 450K or EPIC arrays. Ethnicity-stratified analyses were performed using linear …

1. Climate change in the Arctic is altering the delivery of nutrients from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems. The impact of these changes on downstream lakes and rivers is influenced by the capacity of small streams to retain such inputs. Given the potential for nutrient limitation in oligotrophic Arctic streams, biotic demand should be high, unless harsh environmental conditions maintain low biomass standing stocks that limit nutrient uptake capacity.
2. We assessed the drivers of nutrient uptake in two contrasting headwater environments in Arctic Sweden: one stream draining upland tundra and the other draining an alluvial valley with birch forest. At …
