Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality
The purpose of this investigation is to have students understand the causes and impact of air pollution especially as it relates to ground level ozone and air particles as well as the role of cities in producing air pollution. Students will read a brochure about ground level ozone created by the Environmental Protection Agency. They will then run a simulation controlling for different factors in a city and recording how changes affect the air pollution within a given location. Lastly, students will analyze ground level ozone data for the New England area from 1983 – 2007 in order to determine …

Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality
In this activity, you are playing the role of a Public Health Investigator (PHI) assigned to a case. In your city, there has been a recent outbreak of sickness that is affecting dozens of people. The doctors report that the illness is caused by a bacterial infection. All of these people have reported a similar illness over the past 24 hours. They have reported nausea, diarrhea, fever and chills. However, the infection is generally not transferable from person-to-person. Therefore, people who are sickened by the bacteria must be acquiring the infection from a source.

Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality
Students will explore the relationship between the availability of affordable, high quality (nutritious and fresh) food and health by watching a You Tube video and reading a narrative about food deserts. Students will then investigate the food options which are available to them and consider their daily food choices in light of that which is recommended for healthy living. To end the lesson, student will consider some factors associated with cardiovascular disease and reflect on their food choices in light of that information. Given their food choices, students will be asked to reflect on what factors most influence the food …

Lesson Plan: Green Space And Public Health, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality
The purpose of this lesson is to continue exploring characteristics of urban areas that promote public health. Specifically, this lesson focuses on how green space improves neighborhood health by providing space for recreation, which decreases obesity. The lesson begins by having students brainstorm how they typically spend their time during a day off on a snowy day in the winter and a sunny day in the summer. Next, students work in groups either by making calculations using a website or looking at data tables to investigate how living near green space can affect an individual’s activities and the number of …

Lesson Plan: Green Space, Social Networks And Crime, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 05: Public Health & Water Quality
The purpose of this lesson is to investigate how green space influences the interactions between people in cities. Specifically, the lesson focuses on the idea that increased green space provides a location where social networks can be established and supported. Social networks affect health by improving collaboration and the transmission of knowledge. Green space can also reduce conflict and stress in the neighborhood, which can reduce crime. The lesson starts with students brainstorming what they think is the relationship between the amount of available green space and the interactions between people in cities. The students conduct an activity that focuses …
