Lesson Plan - Action In Urban Ecology, Center For Urban Resilience Apr 2021

Lesson Plan - Action In Urban Ecology, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 01: Introduction to Urban Ecology

Students will be provided with a framework for thinking about and planning for directed action based on the science of urban ecology. They will examine and discuss a case study that follows this framework, and will also have the opportunity to apply the framework in an example project, that of making the case for paper recycling in a fictional high school. This framework is a consistent feature of the curriculum, and is a part of every module. Each subsequent module will explore one aspect of the action planning framework in greater detail in conjunction with the understanding goals of the …

Experimental And Theoretical Investigation Of Regioselectivity For A Series Of Ketoimines With Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Density Functional Theory, Amanda Stahl, Joseph M. Fritsch, Kelsey R. Brereton Apr 2021

Experimental And Theoretical Investigation Of Regioselectivity For A Series Of Ketoimines With Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy And Density Functional Theory, Amanda Stahl, Joseph M. Fritsch, Kelsey R. Brereton

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

A series of ketoimines bearing pendant quinolyl substituents were prepared by Schiff base condensation of 1,3-diketones with two different substituents: trifluoromethyl and an alkyl/aryl group (e.g., Me, Et, iPr,tBu, Ph. Synthetic reactions of ketoimines with varying alkyl/aryl substituents altered the distribution of regioisomers as measured in isolated yields and detected by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy of crude reaction mixtures. Reaction with the least sterically encumbered diketone (CF3with Me) resulted in mixture of ketoimines with virtually quantitative formation of the ketoimine resulting from quinolyl addition to the carbonyl adjacent to the alkyl substituent. …

A Class Of Phase-Type Ageing Models And Their Lifetime Distributions, Boquan Cheng Apr 2021

A Class Of Phase-Type Ageing Models And Their Lifetime Distributions, Boquan Cheng

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Ageing is a universal and ever-present biological phenomenon. Yet, describing the ageing mechanism in formal mathematical terms — in particular, capturing the ageing pattern and quantifying the ageing rate — has remained a challenging actuarial modelling endeavour. In this thesis, we propose a class of Coxian-type Markovian models. This class enables a quantitative description of the well-known characteristics of ageing, which is a genetically determined, progressive, and essentially irreversible process. The unique structure of our model features the transition rate for the ageing process and a functional form for the relationship between ageing and death with a shape parameter that …

Lesson Plan - Solutions For Garbage And Hazardous Wastes, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 04: Hazardous Waste

The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to develop a sense of duty and possibility that garbage and hazardous wastes can be successfully addressed, even if at a local scale. Students will learn about the Three-R’s (and composting), and then develop an action plan to deal with garbage at a local level, such as in the school offices or cafeteria, or through the local community or neighborhood. Students will explore and discuss traditional and innovative approaches to hazardous and material waste problems, learn to think about presenting information appropriately for their audience, and develop and action plan to …

Lesson Plan - Is The Earth's Climate Changing?, Center For Urban Resilience Apr 2021

Lesson Plan - Is The Earth's Climate Changing?, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 03: Energy & Climate Change

The main purpose of this lesson is to introduce the concept of climate change and to reexamine the earth as an energy system. The lesson begins by students watching short video clips with different perspectives on global climate change. The class then discusses whether or not they believe the climate is changing and what would count as evidence of climate change. Finally, the class analyzes temperature data from the past 120 years and then the past 1000 years that illustrates how the climate has become warmer over time. In the next lesson, students will explore why that climate change is …

Lesson Plan - The Greenhouse Effect, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 03: Energy & Climate Change

This lesson presents students with a review of the greenhouse effect and the overall energy gains by the earth due to the enhancement of this process. To illustrate the ideas presented, the class will do an investigation logging the temperatures inside and outside of an aquarium, with and without vegetation. The molecular level interactions between light energy and gases will then be presented with a PowerPoint in order for students to better understand the proposed mechanism for the greenhouse effect.

Lesson Plan - Why Should We Care About Climate Change?, Center For Urban Resilience Apr 2021

Lesson Plan - Why Should We Care About Climate Change?, Center For Urban Resilience

Module 03: Energy & Climate Change

This lesson explores the connection between global warming, climate change and weather, with a special examination of the influence of climate change on the changing energetics of storms. The big idea is that global climate change is having a significant impact on a planetary scale and the most visible impact of that is on ocean temperatures. The lesson begins with brainstorming possible effects of global warming and allows students to analyze real weather data. There is special attention paid to how these climate and weather changes may affect students’ own neighborhoods.
