This lesson presents students with a review of the greenhouse effect and the overall energy gains by the earth due to the enhancement of this process. To illustrate the ideas presented, the class will do an investigation logging the temperatures inside and outside of an aquarium, with and without vegetation. The molecular level interactions between light energy and gases will then be presented with a PowerPoint in order for students to better understand the proposed mechanism for the greenhouse effect.

This lesson explores the connection between global warming, climate change and weather, with a special examination of the influence of climate change on the changing energetics of storms. The big idea is that global climate change is having a significant impact on a planetary scale and the most visible impact of that is on ocean temperatures. The lesson begins with brainstorming possible effects of global warming and allows students to analyze real weather data. There is special attention paid to how these climate and weather changes may affect students’ own neighborhoods.

Students will review the carbon cycle focusing on its qualities as a system. The lesson begins with a class discussion in order to illicit students’ prior ideas about the carbon cycle in terms of where it comes from and where it goes in the earth’s system. The purpose of this lesson is for students to consider where they currently obtain their energy from and their subsequent impact on the carbon cycle. The goal is to help students understand that humans extract energy from a variety of sources including carbon based resources (e.g. wood, coal and petroleum). Many of the activities and decisions that humans make everyday impact the amount of greenhouses gases (particularly carbon dioxide) that they produce. The goal of this lesson is for students to explore their greenhouse gas emissions and potential alternative energy sources. Using an online simulation, students explore the economic and environmental impacts of these different sources and recognize that no single alternative energy source will currently provide enough power for a city. However, by combining power from a number of sources, they can minimize the impact on the environment. Students will also discuss the strengths and limitations of this simulation. Finally students will discuss what alternative energy sources might be most viable in their own area.

Students will learn about the process and importance of carbon sequestration by trees. In this process, excess carbon is removed from the carbon cycle by trees. Next, students engage in a series of review activities in which they recall the major concepts that were covered throughout the climate change module and connect them in groups to the lenses/aspects/parts of the Ecosystems Services Model as described in Lesson 6 of Module 1. Students will also participate in a round robin to discuss and explain the reasoning behind why they categorized these concepts the way they did to other groups.
