Module 03: Energy & Climate Change
In this lesson, students will use their knowledge about major and alternative sources of energy to create a public service announcement (PSA) that makes a convincing argument for increasing their community’s use of alternative energy sources. In constructing the argument, students must refer to specific scientifically-based evidence and facts that support their claims about alternative sources. The main point of this lesson is to highlight how the understanding science and envisioning possibilities steps of the action plan process can be utilized to take action. After completing their PSA, students will present their work to the class

A Lightweight And Explainable Citation Recommendation System, Juncheng Yin
A Lightweight And Explainable Citation Recommendation System, Juncheng Yin
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The increased pressure of publications makes it more and more difficult for researchers to find appropriate papers to cite quickly and accurately. Context-aware citation recommendation, which can provide users suggestions mainly based on local citation contexts, has been shown to be helpful to alleviate this problem. However, previous works mainly use RNN models and their variance, which tend to be highly complicated with heavy-weight computation. In this paper, we propose a lightweight and explainable model that is quick to train and obtains high performance. Our model is based on a pre-trained sentence embedding model and trained with triplet loss. Quantitative …
Investigating The Angular Momentum Of Dusty Plasma Multi-Rings, Isaac M. Long, Kiser Z. Colley
Investigating The Angular Momentum Of Dusty Plasma Multi-Rings, Isaac M. Long, Kiser Z. Colley
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Multi-ring dusty plasma systems were created using a grooved rf electrode. These complex plasma systems had distinct sections consisting of a certain number of rings (1 ring section, 2 ring section, 3 ring section, 4 ring section). These rings had the tendency to rotate azimuthally about the center of the electrode, which allowed for a sectional angular velocity (ω) to be calculated. It was determined that as the number of dust rings (therefore the mass) increased, ω decreased which agrees with conservation of angular momentum. The pressure was also varied and it was found that as pressure increased, the width …

Simulation Of Optical Properties Of Dielectric Layers From Visible To Near Infrared Spectral Range, Andrew Cochran, Cory Conkel
ONU Student Research Colloquium
Optical properties of dielectrics play a critical role in various applications including the design and manufacture of optical components & devices such as detectors, filters, imagers, lenses, optical coatings, photonic crystals, sensors and waveguides, and solar cells. Radiative properties of varying thicknesses of different dielectrics such as Aluminum Oxide (Al2O3), Silicon Dioxide (SiO2), Indium Tin Oxide (ITO), Magnesium Fluoride (MgF2) and Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) have been simulated and compared in the range of visible to near infrared by mathematical modelling using MATLAB simulations. The results of the evolution of the radiative properties, as a function of dielectric material thickness, on …

Dynamic Microclimate Boundaries Across A Sharp Tropical Rainforest–Clearing Edge, Eric A. Graham, Mark Hansen, William J. Kaiser, Yeung Lam, Eric Yuen, Philip W. Rundel
Biology Faculty Scholarship
As landscapes become increasingly fragmented, research into impacts from disturbance and how edges affect vegetation and community structure has become more important. Descriptive studies on how microclimate changes across sharp transition zones have long existed in the literature and recently more attention has been focused on understanding the dynamic patterns of microclimate associated with forest edges. Increasing concern about forest fragmentation has led to new technologies for modeling forest microclimates. However, forest boundaries pose important challenges to not only microclimate modeling but also sampling regimes in order to capture the diurnal and seasonal dynamic aspects of microclimate along forest edges. …

Celebration of Scholarship 2021
We explore two main concepts in relation to truncated composition matrices: the conditions required for the binormal and commutative properties. Both of these topics are important in linear algebra due to their connection with diagonalization.
We begin with the normal solution before moving onto the more complex binormal solutions. Then we cover conditions for the composition matrix to commute with the general matrix. Finally, we end with ongoing questions for future work.
Diversity – Independent Factors Predict Elevated Extinction Rates, Dustin Perriguey
Diversity – Independent Factors Predict Elevated Extinction Rates, Dustin Perriguey
Earth and Planetary Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
Multiple linear regression was used to determine the relationships between diversity-independent factors (i.e., abiotic, climatic) 2, 5, and 10 Myrs-prior to the most elevated Phanerozoic extinctions. We constructed five abiotic variables from Phanerozoic proxy records1–5 to compare to extinction rates: mean temperature, temperature instability, carbon cycle instability, continental weathering rates, and habitat instability. All three models were statistically significant (P < 0.05) and explained > 70% of the variation in Alroy’s6 three-timer generic extinction rates. However, the 2 Myr-prior model explained the most variance in extinction rates and had the most predictive power, based on adjusted and predictive R2 (~ 72% and 41%, respectively). Carbon …

Temperature Scale Influence On Perceptions Of Climate Risk, Chelsea Spaman
Honors Theses
This study explored how the use of the temperature scales Fahrenheit and Celsius in climate science communication affects climate change concern. The study specifically targeted Americans due to their familiarity with the Fahrenheit scale, which is not the primary temperature scale used in scientific communication. The study employed a survey, in which the anonymous participants read a short introduction about climate change and temperature rise and then answered a series of questions regarding levels of climate change concern. These questions covered concerns about climate change in general and its potential to harm individual survey participants, flora and fauna, future generations, …

Control Over Skies: Survivability, Coverage, And Mobility Laws For Hierarchical Aerial Base Stations, Vishal Sharma, Navuday Sharma, Mubashir Husain Rehmani, Haris Pervaiz
Publications
Aerial Base Stations (ABSs) have gained significant importance in the next generation of wireless networks for accommodating mobile ground users and flash crowds with high convenience and quality. However, to achieve an efficient ABS network, many factors pertaining to ABS flight, governing laws and information transmissions must be studied. In this article, multi-drone communications are studied in three major aspects, survivability, coverage, and mobility laws, which optimize the multitier ABS network to avoid issues related to inter-cell interference, deficient energy, frequent handovers, and lifetime. The article includes simulation results of hierarchical ABS allocations for handling a set of users over …

Role Of The Cretaceous Normal Faults On The Formation Of The Eocene (Pontide) Fold-Thrust Belt Structures In Offshore Akçakoca-Amasra Area, Western Black Sea Basin, Turkey, Özgür Türkmen, İbrahim Çemen
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
The Western Black Sea basin formed during therifting of the Moesian Platform in Early Cretaceous. The closure of the Neotethys Ocean in the Middle Eocene resulted in the formation of the Pontide fold and thrust belt in northern Turkey. During this study, eight seismic reflection profiles were interpreted to determine the subsurface structural geometry and tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the offshore Akçakoca-Amasra area. The stratigraphy of the study area is determined based on a composite wireline well log of the Akçakoca-1 wildcat well, which was also used to construct a velocity model based onsonic data. We suggest that a major décollement …

We Unravel The Many-Body Dynamics Of A Harmonically Trapped Impurity Colliding With A Bosonic Medium Confined In A Double Well Upon Quenching The Initially Displaced Harmonic Trap To The Center Of The Double Well. We Reveal That The Emerging Correlation Dynamics Crucially Depends On The Impurity-Medium Interaction Strength Allowing For A Classification Into Different Dynamical Response Regimes. For Strong Attractive Impurity-Medium Couplings The Impurity Is Bound To The Bosonic Bath, While For Intermediate Attractions It Undergoes An Effective Tunneling. In The Case Of Weak Attractive Or Repulsive Couplings The Impurity Penetrates The Bosonic Bath And Performs A Dissipative Oscillatory Motion. …

In recent years, real-valued neural networks have demonstrated promising, and often striking, results across a broad range of domains. This has driven a surge of applications utilizing high-dimensional datasets. While many techniques exist to alleviate issues of high-dimensionality, they all induce a cost in terms of network size or computational runtime. This work examines the use of quaternions, a form of hypercomplex numbers, in neural networks. The constructed networks demonstrate the ability of quaternions to encode high-dimensional data in an efficient neural network structure, showing that hypercomplex neural networks reduce the number of total trainable parameters compared to their real-valued …

Fireworks degrade air quality, reduce visibility, alter atmospheric chemistry, and cause short-term adverse health effects. However, there have not been any comprehensive physicochemical and optical measurements of fireworks and their associated impacts in a Southeast Asia megacity, where fireworks are a regular part of the culture. Size-resolved particulate matter (PM) measurements were made before, during, and after New Year 2019 at the Manila Observatory in Quezon City, Philippines, as part of the Cloud, Aerosol, and Monsoon Processes Philippines Experiment (CAMP2Ex). A high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) recorded a substantial increase in backscattered signal associated with high aerosol loading ∼440 m above the …
The Analysis Of Groundwater Recharge In Mongolia Using Vadose Zone Modeling, Khulan Batsukh
The Analysis Of Groundwater Recharge In Mongolia Using Vadose Zone Modeling, Khulan Batsukh
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Knowledge of groundwater recharge (GR) is vital for optimal water resources management under an arid continental climate. However, in vast territories such as Mongolia, direct measurements of GR are unfeasible because they mandate excessive costs, stemming from time-consuming and labor-demanding efforts. A valid alternative to direct measurements is numerical models based on the monitoring of precipitation (P) and evapotranspiration (ET) for simulating GR. While direct measurements of ET are logistically problematic and unpractical for large-scale applications, a reliable prediction may be derived from crop reference evapotranspiration (ET0) which is calculable …
Sensible/Latent Hybrid Thermal Energy Storage For The Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Brayton Cycle, Kelly Osterman
Sensible/Latent Hybrid Thermal Energy Storage For The Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Brayton Cycle, Kelly Osterman
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Mitigating the effects of climate change will require rapid deployment of a carbon-free electricity system that includes all available forms of zero-carbon energy. Both renewables and nuclear show great promise, but both come with drawbacks. Power production from wind and solar is limited to times when their respective resources are available, while nuclear is limited in its ability to adjust its output according to the ever-varying demand for electricity. Additionally, the systems must be affordable. One way to reduce the cost of thermal power plants (concentrated solar power and nuclear) is to use new power cycles, such as the supercritical …
Optimization Of Grow-Out Of Bouldering Coral Microfragments: Land Vs. Offshore Nursery, Ashlee A. Steinberg
Optimization Of Grow-Out Of Bouldering Coral Microfragments: Land Vs. Offshore Nursery, Ashlee A. Steinberg
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Corals along the Florida Reef Tract and the wider Caribbean have been declining for decades. Low densities of adult colonies hinder the ability of corals to replenish themselves through sexual reproduction, thus reef managers are focusing on restoration actions that increase coral biomass. Microfragmentation is a way to quickly increase the biomass of bouldering corals by cutting the coral into small pieces which forces the coral to allocate its resources away from reproduction and back into growth, increasing its growth rate. This study assessed the optimal location for grow-out (land vs. offshore nursery) and its synergy with size of fragment …
Synthesis Of Halogenated Glyoximes, Nickie Tiwari
Synthesis Of Halogenated Glyoximes, Nickie Tiwari
Honors Theses
Dr. Huang is a chemical engineering professor at the University of Alabama. He is interested in using alpha-Halogenated glyoximes to better understand impurity incorporation of organic additives. Various alpha-Halogenated glyoximes are being synthesized for his study. In this project, bromodimethylglyoxime is being synthesized. This is a two-step reaction. The first reaction converts diacetlymonoxime to bromodimethylglyoxalmonoxime through bromination. The product is then reacted with hydroxylammonium chloride to form bromodimethylglyoxime. Ultimately, there has been success in forming bromodimethylglyoxalmonoxime. For this reaction, solvent ratios of methanol must be proportional to literature values. However, there have been difficulties in converting bromomonoxime to bromodimethylglyoxime. There …

Studies have been done to see if abundance of neutrinos have an effect on the decay rate of radioactive nuclei. Questions regarding the proximity of the sun and the concentration of the flux of neutrinos as a result, have emerged due to there being more counts in the winter when the sun is closer versus there being less counts in the summer when the sun is farther away. Other studies say that the cause of the difference in counts are more local, as in the environmental conditions like temperature and various background radiation that interferes with the counts of the …
