The Effect Of Changing Substrate On Arctic Aquatic Invertebrates Abundance, Tom Dolman Apr 2021

The Effect Of Changing Substrate On Arctic Aquatic Invertebrates Abundance, Tom Dolman

Michael D. Wilson Symposium

Climate change is directly affecting tundra ecosystems in northern regions, and warming temperatures have caused discontinuous permafrost and thawing sediments across the region. This project investigates how increasing erosion and the foraging patterns of migratory snow geese may degrade habitat for aquatic invertebrates in the upper Mast River, located in Wapusk National Park, Manitoba, Canada. In the past two decades, many of the important species of aquatic invertebrates have shown declines. Declining invertebrate populations are predicted to affect aquatic ecosystems and decrease the resources available to shorebirds and waterfowl, which breed and migrate through this area.

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Solution processed organic field effect transistors can become ubiquitous in flexible optoelectronics. While progress in material and device design has been astonishing, low environmental and operational stabilities remain longstanding problems obstructing their immediate deployment in real world applications. Here, we introduce a strategy to identify the most probable and severe degradation pathways in organic transistors and then implement a method to eliminate the main sources of instabilities. Real time monitoring of the energetic distribution and transformation of electronic trap states during device operation, in conjunction with simulations, revealed the nature of traps responsible for performance degradation. With this information, we …

Informing Drought Mitigation Policy By Estimating The Value Of Water For Crop Production, Renata Rimsaite, Justin Gibson, Nicholas Brozovic Apr 2021

Informing Drought Mitigation Policy By Estimating The Value Of Water For Crop Production, Renata Rimsaite, Justin Gibson, Nicholas Brozovic

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Farmers use irrigation to mitigate drought risk and reduce yield uncertainty. A clear understanding of the monetary value of irrigation water and how it varies across time and space can help to inform farmers and policymakers about the potential impacts of water shortages and reduce uncertainty in decision making. Here, we introduce a framework for understanding the economic value of water used to produce corn in the central High Plains region during the period 2010–2017. Our analysis uses publicly available data for corn price and for irrigated and non-irrigated yields and incorporates irrigation requirement adjustments to account for the hydrologic …

A Divergent Strategy For The Synthesis Of Redox-Active Verdazyl Radical Polymers, Francois Magnan, Jasveer S. Dhindsa, Michael Anghel, Paul Bazylweski, Giovanni Fanchini, Joe Gilroy

Chemistry Publications

Stable radical polymers have attracted significant attention due to their use as magnetic materials, (co)catalysts in organic synthesis, and as functional components of organic electronics including batteries and memory devices. Despite their importance, a relatively narrow range of synthetic strategies exist for their production. The most common examples involve the transition-metal catalyzed polymerization of radical-containing monomers or the sequential polymerization of monomers containing radical precursors and their post-polymerization conversion to radicals. Post-polymerization installation of stable radicals is not commonly reported. Copper-assisted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) chemistry has seen limited use in this regard, but only for the production of p-conjugated and …

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Plant–soil water isotopic dynamics in northern forests have been understudied relative to other forest types; nevertheless, such information can provide insight into how such forests may respond to hydroclimatic change. This study examines the co-evolution of xylem water and soil water stable isotopic compositions in a northern mixed forest in Ontario, Canada. Gross precipitation, bulk soil water and xylem water were sampled from pre-leaf out to post-senescence in 2016 for eastern white cedar, eastern hemlock, red oak and eastern white pine. Near-bole soil water contents and mobile soil water isotopic compositions were measured for the last three species. Mobile soil …

Using Information Theory To Extract Patterns From Categorical Raster Data, David Percy Apr 2021

Using Information Theory To Extract Patterns From Categorical Raster Data, David Percy

Systems Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Information theory -- Reconstructability Analysis (RA) implemented in the Occam software -- was used to extract patterns from National Land Cover Data. The aim was to predict temporal change in evergreen forests from time-lagged and spatially adjacent states. The NLCD satellite data were preprocessed with Python and submitted to Occam for analysis, and Occam output was also explored with R-studio. The effectiveness of RA methodology for the analysis of this type of categorical space-time grid data was demonstrated.

Robust Wavefront Dislocations Of Friedel Oscillations In Gapped Graphene, Shu-Hui Zhang, Jin Yang, Ding-Fu Shao, Zhenhua Wu, Wen Yang Apr 2021

Robust Wavefront Dislocations Of Friedel Oscillations In Gapped Graphene, Shu-Hui Zhang, Jin Yang, Ding-Fu Shao, Zhenhua Wu, Wen Yang

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Friedel oscillation is a well-known wave phenomenon which represents the oscillatory response of electron waves to imperfection. By utilizing the pseudospin-momentum locking in gapless graphene, two recent experiments demonstrate the measurement of the topological Berry phase by corresponding to the unique number of wavefront dislocations in Friedel oscillations. Here, we study the Friedel oscillations in gapped graphene, in which the pseudospin-momentum locking is broken. Unusually, the wavefront dislocations do occur like that in gapless graphene, which requires immediate verification in the current experimental condition. The number of wavefront dislocations is ascribed to the invariant pseudospin winding number in gapped and …

Analysis Of Winter Weather Conditions And Their Relationship To Crashes In Nebraska, John Cecava Apr 2021

Analysis Of Winter Weather Conditions And Their Relationship To Crashes In Nebraska, John Cecava

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Adverse weather conditions: such as changes in visibility, precipitation, wind speed, temperature, and road surface conditions, substantially impact highway and interstate safety. Therefore, an investigation into the winter weather conditions during highway and interstate crashes in Nebraska was conducted. Crash data were obtained from the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) for the years 2008 to 2018. In order to separate the non-winter weather related crashes and the winter weather related crashes, six filtrations were applied to make this possible. These filters were based on a few crash parameters: road classification, alcohol, and crash severity, and weather parameters within the crash …

The Use Of Mayflies, Stoneflies And Caddisflies As Indicators Of Fine Sediment Pollution In Salmon-Bearing Streams Of The Pacific Northwest, Cory Michael Mccaffrey Apr 2021

The Use Of Mayflies, Stoneflies And Caddisflies As Indicators Of Fine Sediment Pollution In Salmon-Bearing Streams Of The Pacific Northwest, Cory Michael Mccaffrey

Dissertations and Theses

Fine sediment (particles < 2 mm in diameter) deposition is a natural component of streams but in excess amounts it is harmful to aquatic biota. Fine sediment is the main cause of impairment in streams and rivers of the Pacific Northwest and it can lead to unsuitable spawning and rearing habitat for Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed Salmon and steelhead. From a regulatory perspective, fine sediment presents a challenge because it is difficult to measure in situ and to establish criteria that would indicate stream impairment. Consequently, there is considerable effort to develop biocriteria using stream macroinvertebrates that would help regulators determine if a stream is impaired by excessive fine sediment.

Stream macroinvertebrates are widely used to monitor and assess stream degradation because they are affected by the physical, chemical and biological conditions in a stream. In particular, the stream insects known as mayflies (Ephemeroptera, E), stoneflies (Plecoptera, P) and caddisflies (Trichoptera, T) are commonly used as a metric referred to as EPT richness. EPT taxa are well known as pollutant intolerant …

Cosmological Inflation In N-Dimensional Gaussian Random Fields With Algorithmic Data Compression, Connor Painter Apr 2021

Cosmological Inflation In N-Dimensional Gaussian Random Fields With Algorithmic Data Compression, Connor Painter

Arts & Sciences Student Symposium

The leading theories of inflation are increasingly multi-dimensional. In this project, we consider a natural hypothesis that the inflaton potential, the theorized mechanism behind accelerated expansion in the early universe, is maximally random. We present a program that simulates random potentials, solves equations of motion, and catalogues predictions for observable quantities, such as perturbation spectra.
