Mathematics and Statistics: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Lack of blood flow to the brain, i.e., ischemic stroke, results in loss of nerve cells and therefore loss of function in the effected brain regions. There is no effective treatment to improve lost function except restoring blood flow within the first several hours. Rehabilitation strategies are widely used with limited success. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of electrical stimulation on the impaired upper extremity to improve functional recovery after stroke. We developed a rodent model using an electrode cuff implant onto a single peripheral nerve (median nerve) of the paretic forelimb and applied daily …

Clay Mineralogy And Paleoclimatic Properties Of The Neogene Deposits In Sinanpaşa Basin (Afyon-Western Anatolia), Elif Akiska, Zehra Karakaş Apr 2021

Clay Mineralogy And Paleoclimatic Properties Of The Neogene Deposits In Sinanpaşa Basin (Afyon-Western Anatolia), Elif Akiska, Zehra Karakaş

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

The Sinanpaşa basin, one of the Neogene basins formed in the extensional tectonic regime in Western Anatolia, is located on the eastern margin of Western Anatolia basins containing different types of evaporites, lignite, uranium and clay minerals. Miocene sequence was initiated with alluvial fanfluvial units and followed by lacustrine sediments. River floodplains and lakeshore marshes locally contain economic coal levels. Since middle-late Miocene, the products of Afyon volcanism were deposited into a subaerial or a subaqueous environment alternating with lake sediments. Dominant clay minerals are illite and smectite within the sediments coexistence with the volcanics. These minerals were accompanied by …

On Tests Of Independence Among Multiplerandom Vectors Of Arbitrary Dimensions., Angshuman Roy Dr. Apr 2021

On Tests Of Independence Among Multiplerandom Vectors Of Arbitrary Dimensions., Angshuman Roy Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Measures of dependence among several random vectors and associated tests of independence play a major role in different statistical applications. Blind source separation or independent component analysis (see, e.g., Hyv¨arinen et al., 2001; Shen et al., 2009), feature selection and feature extraction (see, e.g., Li et al., 2012), detection of serial correlation in time series (see, e.g., Ghoudi et al., 2001) and finding the causal relationships among the variables (see, e.g., Chakraborty and Zhang, 2019) are some examples of their wide-spread applications. Tests of independence has vast applications in other areas of sciences as well. For instance, to characterize the …

Integrating Common Data Analytics Tools Into Non-Technical Undergraduate Curricula, Kurt Kirstein Apr 2021

Integrating Common Data Analytics Tools Into Non-Technical Undergraduate Curricula, Kurt Kirstein

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Education and Professional Studies

Aside from statistics courses, accessible data analytics skills are often excluded from traditional non-technical university programs. These are topics that are typically the domain of programs that focus on math, statistics and computer science. Yet the need for these skills in non-technical disciplines is changing. A rapid expansion of data-related processes in organizations of many types requires individuals who have at least a working knowledge of common analytic tools. This article briefly describes three categories of data analytics tools that can be useful for graduates in any discipline. The first category covers descriptive tools that allow students to learn what …

Oit Web App, Stanley Ritsema

Honors Theses

The goal of this project was to create a web app to assist WMU’s help desk in handling various user issues relating to Office365 and WebEx. The three issues of unblocking email, enabling live-streaming, and changing the URL of a personal meeting room all require administrative access but the OIT department wanted to empower front desk staff to handle such requests. The project was designed using a web server that takes user input from a help desk employee and executes java functions that make API calls. In the end, we were able to successfully create this proof-of-concept prototype for two …

Edmms Temperature Controller, Anthony Kirkland Apr 2021

Edmms Temperature Controller, Anthony Kirkland

Honors Theses

Temperature control systems in consumer appliances like that of a thermostat interfacing with HVAC systems, refrigerators and ovens are oscillatory in nature. There is a temperature at which the machine that causes the change in the system comes on and a different temperature at which it comes off. While sufficient for humans, welding, metal casting, and other metallurgical processes require precise temperature control, more precise than the hysteresis of a consumer system.

Proportional integral derivative (PID) provides a better way of monitoring the way temperature changes when the entity that changes the environment comes on and renders changes in system …

An Ensemble Of The Icluster Method To Analyze Longitudinal Lncrna Expression Data For Psoriasis Patients, Suyan Tian, Chi Wang Apr 2021

An Ensemble Of The Icluster Method To Analyze Longitudinal Lncrna Expression Data For Psoriasis Patients, Suyan Tian, Chi Wang

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Psoriasis is an immune-mediated, inflammatory disorder of the skin with chronic inflammation and hyper-proliferation of the epidermis. Since psoriasis has genetic components and the diseased tissue of psoriasis is very easily accessible, it is natural to use high-throughput technologies to characterize psoriasis and thus seek targeted therapies. Transcriptional profiles change correspondingly after an intervention. Unlike cross-sectional gene expression data, longitudinal gene expression data can capture the dynamic changes and thus facilitate causal inference.

METHODS: Using the iCluster method as a building block, an ensemble method was proposed and applied to a longitudinal gene expression dataset for psoriasis, with the …

Construct Linear Quasi-Interpolants On Infinite Intervals, Johara Farah Albaliwi Apr 2021

Construct Linear Quasi-Interpolants On Infinite Intervals, Johara Farah Albaliwi

Dissertations

In solving the data interpolation problem, which is fundamental in data analysis, we typically deal with the data samples spread in a finite interval [a, b], which results in the operations involving finite-dimensional matrices. There are many interesting results developed under this framework. However, when the data samples are given from an infinite interval [a, ∞) (for certain special types of real-world applications), many existing results would not work anymore due to the special properties of the infinite data samples. A new framework should be established to support the infinite data samples.

In this dissertation, we develop a special tool …

Exploring Ai And Multiplayer In Java, Ronni Kurtzhals

Student Academic Conference

I conducted research into three topics: artificial intelligence, package deployment, and multiplayer servers in Java. This research came together to form my project presentation on the implementation of these topics, which I felt accurately demonstrated the various things I have learned from my courses at Moorhead State University. Several resources were consulted throughout the project, including the work of W3Schools and StackOverflow as well as relevant assignments and textbooks from previous classes. I found this project relevant to computer science and information systems for several reasons, such as the AI component and use of SQL data tables; but it was …

Mlatticeabc: Generic Lattice Constant Prediction Of Crystal Materials Using Machine Learning, Yuxin Li, Wenhui Yang, Rongzhi Dong, Jianjun Hu

Faculty Publications

Lattice constants such as unit cell edge lengths and plane angles are important parameters of the periodic structures of crystal materials. Predicting crystal lattice constants has wide applications in crystal structure prediction and materials property prediction. Previous work has used machine learning models such as neural networks and support vector machines combined with composition features for lattice constant prediction and has achieved a maximum performance for cubic structures with an average coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.82. Other models tailored for special materials family of a fixed form such as ABX3 perovskites can achieve much higher performance due …

Mathematics And Enterprise Innovation, Pingwen Zhang Apr 2021

Mathematics And Enterprise Innovation, Pingwen Zhang

Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)

The innovation and development of China are inseparable from mathematics. The development of applied mathematics, embodied in scientific discovery, national defense construction and enterprise innovation, is mainly driven by national demand. At present, China's economy has entered into a period of innovation driven development. Enterprises, as the main participants of national economic activities, need the support of mathematics for innovation and development. Regarding how to promote enterprise innovation through mathematics, this paper puts forward four aspects that we need to pay attention to and improve on: posing problems, solving problems, reporting results, and evaluating results. At the end, the paper …

Exploring Manifoldlike Causal Sets And Their Dimensions, Santosh Bhandari Apr 2021

Exploring Manifoldlike Causal Sets And Their Dimensions, Santosh Bhandari

Honors Theses

Causal Set Theory is an approach to quantum gravity that tries to replace the continuum spacetime structure of general relativity with the spacetime that has the property of discreteness and causality. From the standpoint of causal set theory, our spacetime is made up of discrete points that are causally related to one another. A causal set is said to be manifoldlike if it can be faithfully embedded in a Lorentzian manifold. In this thesis, some of the fundamental properties of causal sets are discussed. The first chapter is devoted to the historical background of quantum gravity with a discussion of …

Climatic Controls On The Kinematics Of The Hooskanaden Landslide, Curry County, Oregon, Kara Kingen Apr 2021

Climatic Controls On The Kinematics Of The Hooskanaden Landslide, Curry County, Oregon, Kara Kingen

Dissertations and Theses

Slow-moving earthflows represent major sources of sediment transport and erosion and are problematic for the management of critical infrastructure. The Hooskanaden Landslide -- a slow-moving earthflow on the southwest coast of Oregon -- crosses US Highway 101 and has been a site of continued interest to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) due to the weak lithology, erosive environment, and recurrent surge behavior (every ~15 years). Past surges, including the most recent (2019), have occurred during the winter, suggesting that velocity changes are predominantly controlled by climatic inputs. To examine the response of the Hooskanaden Landslide to seasonal and other …

Microbially-Mediated Carbonate Dissolution And Precipitation; Towards A Protocol For Ex-Situ, Cave-Analogue Cultivation Experiments, Vanessa E. Johnston, Andrea Martín-Pérez, Sara Skok, Janez Mulec Apr 2021

Microbially-Mediated Carbonate Dissolution And Precipitation; Towards A Protocol For Ex-Situ, Cave-Analogue Cultivation Experiments, Vanessa E. Johnston, Andrea Martín-Pérez, Sara Skok, Janez Mulec

International Journal of Speleology

Subterranean calcite dissolution and precipitation are often considered as strictly geochemical processes. The active involvement of microbes in these processes is commonly underestimated in the literature due to general oligotrophic conditions in caves, except in particular cave conditions, such as sulfidic caves and moonmilk deposits, where the presence of microbes likely plays a key role in mineral deposition. Here, we study the possible involvement of microbes from Postojna Cave, Slovenia, in carbonate dissolution (litholysis) and precipitation (lithogenesis). Microbes were sampled from small pools below hydrologically diverse drip sites and incubated on polished limestone tablets at 10 and 20°C for 2 …

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) delivers a variety of products and tools that support the mitigation of coastal hazards, including protecting life and property. Our Coastal Change Hazards (CCH) programmatic focus was born from a goal to better serve communities’ needs using the best science available to support effective coastal management and inform decision making from local …

Viability Of Consumer Grade Hardware For Learning Computer Forensics Principles, Lazaro A. Herrera Apr 2021

Viability Of Consumer Grade Hardware For Learning Computer Forensics Principles, Lazaro A. Herrera

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

We propose utilizing budget consumer hardware and software to teach computer forensics principles and for non-case work, research and developing new techniques. Consumer grade hardware and free / open source software is more easily accessible in most developing markets and can be used as a first purchase for education, technique development and even when developing new techniques. These techniques should allow for small forensics laboratories or classroom settings to have the tooling and framework for trying existing forensics techniques or creating new forensics techniques on consumer grade hardware. We'll be testing how viable each individual piece of hardware is as …
