Tdim Ionospheric Model Tec, Hmf2, And Nmf2 At Mid-Latitude Northern Hemisphere, Used In The Paper Titled "Is Tec A Viable Servo Input?", Jan J. Sojka
Browse all Datasets
The externally imposed vertical drift in the F region is an extremely important driver of ionospheric dynamics but is very difficult to measure or map. Ionospheric servo algorithms have used hmF2 as F-region observable to infer the vertical drift. However, an even more plentiful observable is the total electron content (TEC) whose coverage over northern mid-latitudes has both spatial and temporal availability that matches those of the probable mechanisms responsible for vertical drift dynamics.
This ionospheric, first principle physics, study shows that TEC is a viable servo parameter at mid-latitudes in the noon sector. The servo relationship is shown to …

Gearing Up Impact Assessment As A Vehicle For Achieving The Un Sustainable Development Goals, Angus Morrison-Saunders, Luis E. Sánchez, Francois Retief, John Sinclair, Meinhard Doelle, Megan Jones, Jan-Albert Wessels, Jenny Pope
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This article reflects on the potential for impact assessment (IA) to be a major vehicle for implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While it is acknowledged that the SDGs are intended to deliver broader outcomes than IA currently does, we nevertheless argue there is significant convergence between IA and the SDGs, which we explore utilising the key dimensions of sustainability assessment: comprehensiveness, strategicness and integratedness. We conclude that ‘geared up’ IA might be used as a major vehicle to facilitate achievement of the SDGs. However, IA must become more comprehensive and integrated, such that the full suite of SDGs …

Competition Between Solvent-Solvent And Solvent-Solute Interactions In The Microhydration Of The Hexafluorophosphate Anion, Pf6⁻(H2o)N=1,2, Yasmeen A. Abdo, Gregory S. Tschumper
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study systematically examines the interactions of the hexafluorophosphate anion (PF6-) with one or two solvent water molecules (PF6-(H2O)n where n = 1, 2). Full geometry optimizations and subsequent harmonic vibrational frequency computations are performed on each stationary point using a variety of common density functional theory methods (B3LYP, B3LYP-D3, M06-2X, and ωB97XD) and the MP2 and CCSD(T) ab initio methods with a triple-ζ correlation consistent basis set augmented with diffuse functions on all non-hydrogen atoms (cc-pVTZ for H and aug-cc-pVTZ for P, O, and F; denoted as haTZ). Five new stationary …

Laser Production And Characterization Of Zinc-Oxide Nanoparticles, Bijaya Ghorasainee, Sanjeev Regmi, John Sinko
SCSU Journal of Student Scholarship
ZnO nanoparticles exhibit attractive optical properties that are important in the realm of catalysis and nanotechnology involving the developments of solar cells, chemical sensors and other optoelectronic devices. The main objective of this project was to create zinc oxide nanoparticles of less than 10 nm size by using an Nd: YAG laser and characterize the particle diameter. Zinc oxide nanoparticles were prepared by vaporizing zinc in neat deionized water by laser ablation, aided by a physical 2D-motional micro-stage programmed by Arduino. The addition of surfactant was explored to reduce aggregation of the nanoparticles. Various purification methods were applied to this …

Novel N-phenylindazole based diarylureas have been designed, synthesized and evaluated as potential anticancer agents. In vitro cell viability studies of these derivatives illustrate good potency with IC50 values in the range of 0.4–50 μM in several cancer cell lines including murine metastatic breast cancer 4T1, murine glioblastoma GL261, human triple negative breast cancer MDA-MB-231, human pancreatic cancer MIAPaCa-2, and human colorectal cancer cell line WiDr. The ester group in the lead compound 8i was modified to incorporate amino-amides to increase solubility and stability while retaining biological activity. Further in vitro studies reveal that lead candidates inhibit tube length in HUVEC …

The Role Of Sediment-Induced Light Attenuation On Primary Production During Hurricane Gustav (2008), Zhengchen Zang, Z. George Xue, Kehui Xu, Samuel J. Bentley, Qin Chen, Eurico J. D'Sa, Le Zhang, Yanda Ou
Faculty Publications
We introduced a sediment-induced light attenuation algorithm into a biogeochemical model of the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system. A fully coupled ocean-atmospheric-sediment-biogeochemical simulation was carried out to assess the impact of sediment-induced light attenuation on primary production in the northern Gulf of Mexico during the passage of Hurricane Gustav in 2008. When compared with model results without sediment-induced light attenuation, our new model showed a better agreement with satellite data on both the magnitude of nearshore chlorophyll concentration and the spatial distribution of offshore bloom. When Hurricane Gustav approached, resuspended sediment shifted the inner shelf ecosystem from a nutrient-limited …

Situational Awareness And Public Wi-Fi Users' Self-Protective Behaviors, David Maimon, C. Jordan Howell, Scott Jacques, Robert Perkins
EBCS Articles
Accessing public Wi-Fi networks can be as dangerous as it is convenient. People who access a public Wi-Fi network should engage in self-protective behaviors to keep their data safe from malicious actors on the same network as well as persons looking over their shoulder, literally and proverbially. Using two independent research designs, we examined under what circumstances were people more likely to access an unsecured Wi-Fi network and engage in risky behavior on these networks. Findings from the first study, based on survey data, reveal that people who are more situationally aware are less likely to access personal accounts on …

Sandwich-type clusters with the planar fragment containing a heterometallic sheet have remained elusive. In this work, we introduce the [K(2,2,2-crypt)]4{(Ge9)2[η6-Ge(PdPPh3)3]} complex that contains a heterometallic sandwich fragment. The title compound is structurally characterized by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which reveals the presence of an unusual heteroatomic metal planar fragment Ge@Pd3. The planar fragment contains a rare formal zerovalent germanium core and a peculiar bonding mode of sp2-Ge@(PdPPh3)3 trigonal planar structure, whereas the nonagermanide fragments act as capping ligands. The …

Brown spot is a postharvest disease of grapes caused by Cladosporium species in the San Joaquin Valley of California. It spreads during cold storage and transport, resulting in severe economic losses to late table grape cultivars, which are grown mainly for export to countries such as China and Mexico. We examined the effect of temperature and sulfur dioxide (SO2) treatments on fungal growth and infection of Redglobe berries by three Cladosporium species: Cladosporium ramotenellum, C. cladosporioides and C. limoniforme. Redglobe is especially popular for export. Fungal colonies growing on potato dextrose agar in petri plates stored at −2°C grew slower …
Creating Evidence For Resilience: A Case Of Monsoon Floods Affected Communities In South Asia, Alark Saxena
Creating Evidence For Resilience: A Case Of Monsoon Floods Affected Communities In South Asia, Alark Saxena
Sustainability Seminar Series
The concept of resilience has been rapidly accepted across multiple disciplines and applied work, but operationalizing resilience poses several methodological challenges. Taking the case of two monsoon flood affected transboundary communities situated in the Gangetic plains of South Asia, we provide a framework and methodology to create evidence and evaluate resilience. We present and test two propositions focusing on the variation in wellbeing and the coping capacity that need to be simultaneously satisfied for increased resilience. The two propositions and the methodology are robust to a wide range of shocks and social-ecological systems.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a major scourge in skin and soft-tissue infections, expresses surface-bound haemoprotein receptors that can be exploited for the targeted delivery of photosensitizers. We have developed a nanosized agent for targeted antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), comprised of GaPpIX (a hemin analog with potent photosensitizer activity) encapsulated in haemoglobin (GaHb), mounted on 10 nm Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs). The average GaHb-AgNP contains 28 GaPpIX units stabilized by Hb αβ-dimer units. Eradication (>6-log reduction) of S. aureus and MRSA can be achieved by a 10-second exposure to 405 nm irradiation from a light-emitting diode (LED) array (140 mW cm−2), …
