Acta of Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent

Isomorphism Of Trees And Isometry Of Ultrametric Spaces, Oleksiy Dovgoshey
Isomorphism Of Trees And Isometry Of Ultrametric Spaces, Oleksiy Dovgoshey
Theory and Applications of Graphs
We study the conditions under which the isometry of spaces with metrics generated by weights given on the edges of finite trees is equivalent to the isomorphism of these trees. Similar questions are studied for ultrametric spaces generated by labelings given on the vertices of trees. The obtained results generalized some facts previously known for phylogenetic trees and for Gurvich---Vyalyi monotone trees.
Hybrid Density Functionals With Proper Exact Exchange, Liyuan Ye
Hybrid Density Functionals With Proper Exact Exchange, Liyuan Ye
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Hybrid density functionals have the best overall performance among standard density func-tional approximations (DFA). According to their original design, hybrid DFAs are supposedto use the exact exchange (EXX). However, when hybrid functionals were originally intro-duced, there was no simple method to compute EXX, so all of their practical implementationsstarted using the Hartree–Fock exchange (HFX), which can be computed easily and is simi-lar to but distinct from EXX. Recent development of an efficient method for computing EXXmade it possible to implement hybrid functionals in line with their original definition. Weimplemented EXX in the PBE0 functional and compared its performance with that …

Conductivity Reversal In Silicon Doped With S And Zn, Abdulaziz Shavkatovich Mavlyanov, Nurullo Zikrillayev, Maruf Khaqqulov, Erkin Khaltursunov, Farhod Shakarov
Acta of Turin Polytechnic University in Tashkent
Based on experimental results of investigation of type of conductivity of silicon samples doped with sulfur at Т=1250°С, and thereafter with zinc at T=1200°С, the authors put forward the hypothesis about self-assembly of “binary” elementary cells where atoms of elements of group II (Zn) and IV (S) allegedly form ZnS-type compounds in Si. The thermodynamic conditions required for buildup of such elementary cells and assembly of various associations in the basic lattice of silicon including self-assembly of ZnS clusters were theoretically determined and experimentally justified.

Rare Earth-Bearing Particles In Fly Ash Carbons: Examples From The Combustion Of Eastern Kentucky Coals, James C. Hower, John G. Groppo Jr.
Center for Applied Energy Research Faculty and Staff Publications
Graphitic carbons from the combustion of bituminous coals and, perhaps, other coal ranks, tend to capture iron and a number of hazardous elements, including As, Hg, and Se. Rare earth elements in fly ashes occur in minerals, such as monazite, xenotime, and davidite. They also occur in sub-nm particles, probably in a mineral form, within the Al–Si glass on the investigated fly ashes. Just as graphitic carbons can capture Fe and hazardous elements, the carbons surrounding the fly ash glass and magnetic particles captures or encapsulates a broad suite of rare earth elements.
Detecting Symptoms Of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease And Congestive Heart Failure Via Cough And Wheezing Sounds Using Smart-Phones And Machine Learning, Anthony Windmon
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) are progressive disorders, and major health concerns among today’s aging population. COPD causes a large mucus buildup in the lungs, leading to chronic cough and difficulty to breathe. CHF causes fluid buildup in the lower lungs due to the failing heart, causing cough and difficulty to breath. People who are clinically diagnosed with COPD or CHF are expected to regularly monitor their symptoms and follow complex medical recommendations in an effort to prevent exacerbation. In this dissertation, we elaborate upon three different machine learning based techniques that we developed for …

Aqueous Kinetics Of Α-Hydroxyhippuric Acid Derivatives Bearing Electron-Withdrawing Groups As A Function Of Ph And Buffer Catalysts, Mohamad Imad Rafie
Theses and Dissertations
It has been shown that carbinolamides are intermediates in the enzyme-catalyzed synthesis of -amidated peptides. Although carbinolamides are important intermediates in the production of these hormones and have roles in other biological venues, little attention has been given to their mechanisms of reaction in water, and, thus, it is difficult to speculate how their reaction would be enzymatically catalyzed. The purpose of the work presented here was to synthesize structural analogs of the biological intermediates and study their mechanism of breakdown in water. -Hydroxyhippuric acid, a substrate for the enzymatic system, provides an easily modified template for the study of …
Do Fungal Symbionts Of Salt Marsh Plants Affect Interspecies Competition?, Vanessa Robertson-Rojas
Do Fungal Symbionts Of Salt Marsh Plants Affect Interspecies Competition?, Vanessa Robertson-Rojas
Dissertations and Theses
The effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) as salt marsh plant symbionts may have significant effects on landscape scale distribution patterns and plant-related ecosystem functions that are important to estuarine habitats. This work investigates the effects AMF have on Phalaris arundinacea, Deschampsia cespitosa, and Juncus balticus when grown in a common garden experiment. Plants were grown with and without AMF inoculation in both polyculture and monoculture communities and examined for a variety of response variables that represent different competition strategies. Factorial ANOVA analysis revealed a significant three-way interaction among fungal treatment type, community type, and species for …
Chess As A Testing Grounds For The Oracle Approach To Ai Safety, James D. Miller, Roman Yampolskiy, Olle Häggström, Stuart Armstrong
Chess As A Testing Grounds For The Oracle Approach To Ai Safety, James D. Miller, Roman Yampolskiy, Olle Häggström, Stuart Armstrong
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
To reduce the danger of powerful super-intelligent AIs, we might make the first such AIs oracles that can only send and receive messages. This paper proposes a possibly practical means of using machine learning to create two classes of narrow AI oracles that would provide chess advice: those aligned with the player's interest, and those that want the player to lose and give deceptively bad advice. The player would be uncertain which type of oracle it was interacting with. As the oracles would be vastly more intelligent than the player in the domain of chess, experience with these oracles might …

Contrasting Cumulative Risk And Multiple Individual Risk Models Of The Relationship Between Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) And Adult Health Outcomes, Marianna Lanoue, Brandon George, Deborah L Helitzer, Scott W Keith
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: A very large body of research documents relationships between self-reported Adverse Childhood Experiences (srACEs) and adult health outcomes. Despite multiple assessment tools that use the same or similar questions, there is a great deal of inconsistency in the operationalization of self-reported childhood adversity for use as a predictor variable. Alternative conceptual models are rarely used and very limited evidence directly contrasts conceptual models to each other. Also, while a cumulative numeric 'ACE Score' is normative, there are differences in the way it is calculated and used in statistical models. We investigated differences in model fit and performance between the …

Systems Microbiology: From Genomes To Ecosystems, Jizhong Zhou
Sustainability Seminar Series
Twenty-first century microbiology faces several grand challenges, e.g., linking structure to functions, mechanisms controlling extremely high diversity, information scaling from genomes to ecosystems, modeling simulation and predictions. With the recent advances of omics technologies, microbiologists have begun to tackle some of these challenges. In this talk, I will report the most recently progresses in these areas at the Institute for Environmental Genomics, with respect to genomic technologies, global microbial diversity and biogeography of wastewater treatment plants, climate warming, community assembly and network tool development, and ecosystem modeling.

Some Topics Involving Derived Categories Over Noetherian Formal Schemes., Saurabh Singh Dr.
Doctoral Theses
There are two parts to this thesis and both the parts involve working with derived categories over noetherian formal schemes. Beyond this there is no overlap between them and we discuss them separately. The first part concerns Grothendieck duality on noetherian formal schemes.Grothendieck duality is a vast generalisation of Serreduality in algebraic geometry. The main statements in this theory are expressed in the language of derived categories. We begin with an important special case.Let f : X → Y be a proper map of noetherian schemes which is smooth of relative dimension n. For any G ∈ D+ qc(Y ) (where …

Detecting baggage threats is one of the most difficult tasks, even for expert officers. Many researchers have developed computer-aided screening systems to recognize these threats from the baggage X-ray scans. However, all of these frameworks are limited in identifying the contraband items under extreme occlusion. This paper presents a novel instance segmentation framework that utilizes trainable structure tensors to highlight the contours of the occluded and cluttered contraband items (by scanning multiple predominant orientations), while simultaneously suppressing the irrelevant baggage content. The proposed framework has been extensively tested on four publicly available X-ray datasets where it outperforms the state-of-the-art frameworks …

Single‐Molecule 3d Orientation Imaging Reveals Nanoscale Compositional Heterogeneity In Lipid Membranes, Jin Lu, Hesam Mazidi, Tianben Ding, Oumeng Zhang, Matthew D. Lew
Electrical & Systems Engineering Publications and Presentations
In soft matter, thermal energy causes molecules to continuously translate and rotate, even in crowded environments, thereby impacting the spatial organization and function of most molecular assemblies, such as lipid membranes. Directly measuring the orientation and spatial organization of large collections (>3000 molecules μm−2) of single molecules with nanoscale resolution remains elusive. In this paper, we utilize SMOLM, single‐molecule orientation localization microscopy, to directly measure the orientation spectra (3D orientation plus “wobble”) of lipophilic probes transiently bound to lipid membranes, revealing that Nile red's (NR) orientation spectra are extremely sensitive to membrane chemical composition. SMOLM images resolve …

The whitespotted eagle ray Aetobatus narinari is a tropical to warm‐temperate benthopelagic batoid that ranges widely throughout the western Atlantic Ocean. Despite conservation concerns for the species, its vertical habitat use and diving behaviour remain unknown. Patterns and drivers in depth distribution of A. narinari were investigated at two separate locations—western North Atlantic (Islands of Bermuda) and Eastern Gulf of Mexico (Sarasota, Florida, USA). Between 2010 and 2014, seven pop‐up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were attached to A. narinari using three methods: a through‐tail suture; external tail‐band; and through‐wing attachment. Retention time ranged from 0–180 days, with tags attached via …

We present a framework for an explainable and statistically validated ensemble clustering model applied to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The objective of our analysis is to identify patient injury severity subgroups and key phenotypes that delineate these subgroups using varied clinical and computed tomography data. Explainable and statistically-validated models are essential because a data-driven identification of subgroups is an inherently multidisciplinary undertaking. In our case, this procedure yielded six distinct patient subgroups with respect to mechanism of injury, severity of presentation, anatomy, psychometric, and functional outcome. This framework for ensemble cluster analysis fully integrates statistical methods at several stages of …

Coastal marshes and their valuable ecosystem services are feared to be lost by sea level rise, yet the mechanisms of marsh degradation into ponds and potential recovery are poorly understood. We quantified and analyzed elevations of marsh surfaces and pond bottoms along a marsh loss gradient (Blackwater River, Maryland, USA). Our analyses show that ponds deepen with increasing tidal channel width connecting the ponds to the river, indicating a new feedback mechanism where channels lead to enhanced tidal export of pond bottom material. Pond elevations also decrease with increasing pond size, consistent with previous work identifying a positive feedback between …
