Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present a framework for an explainable and statistically validated ensemble clustering model applied to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The objective of our analysis is to identify patient injury severity subgroups and key phenotypes that delineate these subgroups using varied clinical and computed tomography data. Explainable and statistically-validated models are essential because a data-driven identification of subgroups is an inherently multidisciplinary undertaking. In our case, this procedure yielded six distinct patient subgroups with respect to mechanism of injury, severity of presentation, anatomy, psychometric, and functional outcome. This framework for ensemble cluster analysis fully integrates statistical methods at several stages of …

Coastal Marsh Degradation Into Ponds Induces Irreversible Elevation Loss Relative To Sea Level In A Microtidal System, Lennert Schepers, Patrick Brennand, Matthew L. Kirwan, Glenn Guntenspergen, Stijn Temmerman

VIMS Articles

Coastal marshes and their valuable ecosystem services are feared to be lost by sea level rise, yet the mechanisms of marsh degradation into ponds and potential recovery are poorly understood. We quantified and analyzed elevations of marsh surfaces and pond bottoms along a marsh loss gradient (Blackwater River, Maryland, USA). Our analyses show that ponds deepen with increasing tidal channel width connecting the ponds to the river, indicating a new feedback mechanism where channels lead to enhanced tidal export of pond bottom material. Pond elevations also decrease with increasing pond size, consistent with previous work identifying a positive feedback between …

Indoor Air Quality Impacts Of A Woodstove Exchange Program In Washington County, Oregon, Matthew Forrest Survilo Sep 2020

Indoor Air Quality Impacts Of A Woodstove Exchange Program In Washington County, Oregon, Matthew Forrest Survilo

Dissertations and Theses

More than six million people in the United States use wood stoves as their primary heat source. Wood stoves emit air pollutants that may impact health, e.g., wood combustion products are associated with premature death and aggravation of pulmonary and cardiovascular conditions. There are few studies investigating the efficacy of wood stove exchange programs (WSEPs) as a method to improve indoor air quality (IAQ). In partnership with Washington County Department of Health and Human Services we conducted an air quality study to measure the impact of a WSEP on indoor and neighborhood levels of wood combustion products. Twenty households engaged …

Radiology Faculty Publications

Optimal use of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) can identify key MRI parameters and provide unique tissue signatures defining phenotypes of breast cancer. We have developed and implemented a new machine-learning informatic system, termed Informatics Radiomics Integration System (IRIS) that integrates clinical variables, derived from imaging and electronic medical health records (EHR) with multiparametric radiomics (mpRad) for identifying potential risk of local or systemic recurrence in breast cancer patients. We tested the model in patients (n = 80) who had Estrogen Receptor positive disease and underwent OncotypeDX gene testing, radiomic analysis, and breast mpMRI. The IRIS method was trained …

Qualitative Features Of A Nonlinear, Nonlocal, Agent-Based Pde Model With Applications To Homelessness, Michael R. Lindstrom, Andrea L. Bertozzi Sep 2020

Qualitative Features Of A Nonlinear, Nonlocal, Agent-Based Pde Model With Applications To Homelessness, Michael R. Lindstrom, Andrea L. Bertozzi

School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we develop a continuum model for the movement of agents on a lattice, taking into account location desirability, local and far-range migration, and localized entry and exit rates. Specifically, our motivation is to qualitatively describe the homeless population in Los Angeles. The model takes the form of a fully nonlinear, nonlocal, non-degenerate parabolic partial differential equation. We derive the model and prove useful properties of smooth solutions, including uniqueness and L2 -stability under certain hypotheses. We also illustrate numerical solutions to the model and find that a simple model can be qualitatively similar in behavior to observed …

Approaches To Interdisciplinary Mixed Methods Research In Land Change Science And Environmental Management, Eva Kinnebrew, Elizabeth Shoffner, Aldo Farah-Pérez, Megan Mills-Novoa, Katherine Siegel

Peer-Reviewed Studies

Combining qualitative and quantitative methods and data is crucial to understanding the complex dynamics and often interdisciplinary nature of conservation. Many conservation scientists use mixed methods, but there are a variety of mixed methods approaches, a lack of shared vocabulary, and few methodological frameworks. We reviewed articles from 2 conservation-related fields that often incorporate qualitative and quantitative methods: land-change science (n= 16) and environmental management (n= 16). We examined how authors of these studies approached mixed-methods research by coding key methodological characteristics, including relationships between method objectives, extent of integration, iterative interactions between methods, and justification for use of mixed …

RAS proteins function as highly regulated molecular switches that control cellular growth. In addition to regulatory proteins, RAS undergoes a number of posttranslational modifications (PTMs) that regulate its activity. Lysine 104, a hot spot for multiple PTMs, is a highly conserved residue that forms key interactions that stabilize the RAS helix-2(H2)/helix-3(H3) interface. Mutation at 104 attenuates interaction with guanine nucleotide exchange factors (GEFs), whereas ubiquitination at lysine 104 retains GEF regulation. To elucidate how ubiquitination modulates RAS function, we generated monoubiquitinated KRAS at 104 using chemical biology approaches and conducted biochemical, NMR, and computational analyses. We find that ubiquitination promotes …

Logistic Regression Under Sparse Data Conditions, David A. Walker, Thomas J. Smith Sep 2020

Logistic Regression Under Sparse Data Conditions, David A. Walker, Thomas J. Smith

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The impact of sparse data conditions was examined among one or more predictor variables in logistic regression and assessed the effectiveness of the Firth (1993) procedure in reducing potential parameter estimation bias. Results indicated sparseness in binary predictors introduces bias that is substantial with small sample sizes, and the Firth procedure can effectively correct this bias.

Topological And H^Q Equivalence Of Cyclic N-Gonal Actions On Riemann Surfaces - Part Ii, Sean A. Broughton Sep 2020

Topological And H^Q Equivalence Of Cyclic N-Gonal Actions On Riemann Surfaces - Part Ii, Sean A. Broughton

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

We consider conformal actions of the finite group G on a closed Riemann surface S, as well as algebraic actions of G on smooth, complete, algebraic curves over an arbitrary, algebraically closed field. There are several notions of equivalence of actions, the most studied of which is topological equivalence, because of its close relationship to the branch locus of moduli space. A second important equivalence relation is that induced by representation of G on spaces of holomorphic q-differentials. The notion of topological equivalence does not work well in positive characteristic. We shall discuss an alternative to topological equivalence, …

A Big Data Lake For Multilevel Streaming Analytics, Ruoran Liu, Haruna Isah, Farhana Zulkernine

Publications and Scholarship

Large organizations are seeking to create new architectures and scalable platforms to effectively handle data management challenges due to the explosive nature of data rarely seen in the past. These data management challenges are largely posed by the availability of streaming data at high velocity from various sources in multiple formats. The changes in data paradigm have led to the emergence of new data analytics and management architecture. This paper focuses on storing high volume, velocity and variety data in the raw formats in a data storage architecture called a data lake. First, we present our study on the limitations …

Towards A Natural Language Query Processing System, Chantal Montgomery, Haruna Isah, Farhana Zulkernine

Publications and Scholarship

Tackling the information retrieval gap between non-technical database end-users and those with the knowledge of formal query languages has been an interesting area of data management and analytics research. The use of natural language interfaces to query information from databases offers the opportunity to bridge the communication challenges between end-users and systems that use formal query languages. Previous research efforts mainly focused on developing structured query interfaces to relational databases. However, the evolution of unstructured big data such as text, images, and video has exposed the limitations of traditional structured query interfaces. While the existing web search tools prove the …

Feature Selection Via Random Subsets Of Uncorrelated Features, Long Kim Dang Sep 2020

Feature Selection Via Random Subsets Of Uncorrelated Features, Long Kim Dang

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The role of feature selection is crucial in many applications. A few of these include computational biology, image classification and risk management. In biology, gene expression micro array data sets have been used extensively in many areas of research. These data sets typically suffer from an important problem: the ratio between the number of features over the number of examples is very high. This problem mainly affects prediction accuracy because it is best to collect more labeled examples than features. A correlation based random subspace ensemble feature selector (CCC_RSM) was proposed to handle this problem [5]. In this approach, first …
