We have measured fully momentum-analyzed recoiling target ions and scattered projectiles, produced in ionization of He and H2 by 75 keV proton impact, in coincidence. The momentum of the ejected electrons was deduced from momentum conservation. From the data we extracted fully differential ionization cross sections as a function of the polar electron emission angle (for fixed electron energies) and as a function of the electron energy (for fixed electron emission angles). Comparison between experiment and various distorted wave calculations confirms that under kinematic conditions where the post-collision interaction plays an important role, the few-body dynamics underlying the ionization …

We constructed a sample of 13,798 stars with Teff , log g, [Fe/H], radial velocity, proper motions and parallaxes from LAMOST DR5 and Gaia DR2 in the LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) at the Southern Galactic Cap consisting of areas A and B. Using the distributions in both proper motions and radial velocity, we detected very significant overdensi- ties in these two areas. These substructures most likely are portions of Sagittarius (Sgr) stream. With the Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (DBSCAN) algorithm, 220 candidates stream members were identified. Based upon distance to the Sun and …

We report on the cancellation of quantum backaction noise in an optomechanical cavity. We perform measurements of the displacement of the microresonator, one in reflection of the cavity and one in transmission of the cavity. We show that measuring the amplitude quadrature of the light transmitted by the optomechanical cavity allows us to cancel the backaction noise between 2 and 50 kHz as a consequence of the strong optical spring present in the detuned cavity. This cancellation yields a more sensitive measurement of the microresonator's position with a 2 dB increase in sensitivity. To confirm that the backaction is eliminated, …

Top Hadrons In Lorentz-Violating Field Theory, Brett David Altschul
Faculty Publications
If there is Lorentz symmetry violation in the t quark sector of the standard model, changes to particles’ dispersion relations might allow for the existence of stable top-flavored hadrons. Observations of the survival of high-energy γ-rays over astrophysical distances can be used to place constraints on Lorentz violation coefficients in the t sector at ∼10−4–10−6 levels of precision.
Ruggedized Color Measurement For Beer, Wort, And Malt, Roger Barth, Randall H. Reiger, Yuki Kim
Ruggedized Color Measurement For Beer, Wort, And Malt, Roger Barth, Randall H. Reiger, Yuki Kim
Chemistry Faculty Publications
The standard instrument for measuring malt, wort, and beer color is the spectrophotometer. Spectrophotometers are not rugged; they have critically aligned collimators, monochromators, lenses, slits, and mirrors that make them difficult to use and maintain in a production environment. Our research shows that wort and beer color can be measured accurately with rugged equipment based on light emitting diodes (LEDs) with results in agreement with those of a spectrophotometer. Two or more colored diodes were used. LED-based apparatus does not require critical alignment, is not highly sensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature, moisture, dust, and vibration, and can be …

The rare earth element (REE) composition of a fossil bone reflects its chemical alteration during diagenesis. Consequently, fossils presenting low REE concentrations and/or REE profiles indicative of simple diffusion, signifying minimal alteration, have been proposed as ideal candidates for paleomolecular investigation. We directly tested this prediction by conducting multiple biomolecular assays on a well-preserved fibula of the dinosaur Edmontosaurus from the Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation previously found to exhibit low REE concentrations and steeply-declining REE profiles. Gel electrophoresis identified the presence of organic material in this specimen, and subsequent immunofluorescence and enzyme-linked immunosorbant assays identified preservation of epitopes of the …
Theoretical Investigation Of Pressure-Induced Structural Transformations Of Ethylenediamine Bisborane, Rongfeng Guan
Theoretical Investigation Of Pressure-Induced Structural Transformations Of Ethylenediamine Bisborane, Rongfeng Guan
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
High-pressure experiments on hydrogen-rich compounds provide crucial data for the rational design of hydrogen storage materials. Ethylenediamine bisborane (EDAB), BH3·NH2CH2CH2NH2·BH3, is one of the prime candidates for this role due to its high hydrogen content (10 wt%) and good kinetic stability under ambient conditions. Previous studies of EDAB using in situ Fourier-transform infrared (IR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques suggested that EDAB undergoes two possible phase transitions in the pressure range of 0 to 17 GPa. However, the crystal structures of the two new …

In vegetated landscapes, rain must pass through plant canopies and litter to enter soils. As a result, some rainwater is returned to the atmosphere (i.e., interception, I) and the remainder is partitioned into a canopy (and gap) drip flux (i.e., throughfall) or drained down the stem (i.e., stemflow). Current theoretical and numerical modeling frameworks for this process are almost exclusively based on data from woody overstory plants. However, herbaceous plants often populate the understory and are the primary cover for important ecosystems (e.g., grasslands and croplands). This study investigates how overstory throughfall (PT,o) is partitioned into …

Explicit consideration of microbial physiology in soil biogeochemical models that represent coupled carbon–nitrogen dynamics presents opportunities to deepen understanding of ecosystem responses to environmental change. The MIcrobial-MIneral Carbon Stabilization (MIMICS) model explicitly represents microbial physiology and physicochemical stabilization of soil carbon (C) on regional and global scales. Here we present a new version of MIMICS with coupled C and nitrogen (N) cycling through litter, microbial, and soil organic matter (SOM) pools. The model was parameterized and validated against C and N data from the Long-Term Inter-site Decomposition Experiment Team (LIDET; six litter types, 10 years of observations, and 13 sites …

Nuclei Near The Boundary Of Neutron Stability, Yu. E. Penionzhkevich
Eurasian Journal of Physics and Functional Materials
This article is devoted to the description of the properties of the lightest nuclei with a large excess of neutrons. Light nuclei have always attracted attention due to the wide variety of their properties. While the structural characteristics of medium and heavy nuclei vary fairly smoothly, only single deviations are observed, the structure of light nuclei varies sharply, two neighboring light nuclei are often completely different from each other. This, on the one hand, makes their study a very interesting task, and on the other hand it makes it difficult to identify common trends. Our interest in light neutron-rich nuclei …

Eurasian Journal of Physics and Functional Materials
The three-body wave function built on the basis of the Gaussian function, calculated using the three-body Hamiltonian with the Pauli blocking operator is studied. As an example, the wave function of the ground state of the 9 Be was taken. Analytical expressions are presented for the overlap matrix elements of the basis function for both basic and alternative set of relative Jacobi coordinates. The correlation densities of the wave function are calculated and illustrated depending on the set of orbital quantum numbers.

The paper presents the results of changes in the strength characteristics of thin film coatings based on compounds of copper-bismuth, copper-magnesium, copper-nickel. The dependences of the influence of the phase composition on the strength characteristics, such as the coefficient of friction, bending strength and impact coefficient, are established. The effect of irradiation with helium ions with a high radiation dose of 1015-1017 ion/cm2 on the strength characteristics is evaluated. It is shown that an increase in the radiation dose leads to a decrease in strength properties due to the appearance of a large concentration of defects …

In work considers the results of studies of the phase composition and mechanical-tribological properties of Ni-Cr detonation coatings obtained at different values of the volume of filling the detonation barrel with an explosive acetylene-oxygen mixture. Analysis of the obtained experimental results indicates that the phase composition and properties of detonation coatings strongly depend on the technological parameters of spraying. When the barrel is filled with an explosive gas mixture of 40%, the coating is not dense enough, with noticeable boundaries between individual particles, which may be the result of insufficient heating and acceleration of the particles of the sprayed powder. …

Nano-dimensional crystalline cadmium sulfide is a semiconductor that exhibits size-dependent opto-electronic properties, determined by the effects of quantum confinement. Due to these effects, it is possible to adjust the optical properties of the final cadmium sulfide clusters by varying their size. In this work we report the results of a theoretical study of CdS nanoparticles with the methods of the density functional tight-binding (DFTB) and the time-dependent density functional theory TD DFT. The calculations of the electronic absorption spectra of CdS crystals were performed on cadmium sulfide nanoparticles with an amount of from 5 to 137 atoms. The DFTB method …

A ternary nanocomposite material based on TiO 2 , graphene oxide and core-shell nanostructures of Ag/TiO2 composition was obtained by a two-step hydrothermal method. The formation of a dual TiO2-GO nanocomposite was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy data, where the nanocomposite spec- tra contain peaks characteristic of both TiO 2 and graphene oxide. Studies of electrophysical character- istics have shown that the addition of plasmon nanoparticles leads to an improvement in the charge-transfer characteristics of the synthesized material. This is due to the fact that the charge transfer resistance of a ternary nanocomposite material TiO2-GO-Ag is …

The Operational Choi-Jamio Lkowski Isomorphism, Emily Adlam
Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research
In this article, I use an operational formulation of the Choi–Jamiołkowski isomorphism to explore an approach to quantum mechanics in which the state is not the fundamental object. I first situate this project in the context of generalized probabilistic theories and argue that this framework may be understood as a means of drawing conclusions about the intratheoretic causal structure of quantum mechanics which are independent of any specific ontological picture. I then give an operational formulation of the Choi–Jamiołkowski isomorphism and show that, in an operational theory which exhibits this isomorphism, several features of the theory which are usually regarded …

We establish a connection between quantum phase transitions (QPTs) and energy band theory in an extended Dicke-Hubbard lattice, where the periodical critical curves modulated by wave number k leads to rich equilibrium dynamics. Interestingly, the chiral-symmetry-protected flat band and the localization that it engenders exclusively occurs in the normal phase and disappears in the superradiant phase. This originates from the QPT induced simultaneous breaking up of the on-site resonance condition and off-site chiral symmetry of the system, which prohibits the destructive interference for obtaining a flat band. Our work offers an approach to identify different phases of the lattice via …

Perovskite oxides are an important and effective class of mixed oxides which play a significant role in the fields of energy storage and conversion systems. Here we present a series of cobaltite perovskite LaCoO3 particles which have been doped with 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30% of Sr2C and have been synthesized by a combined sol– gel and molten-salt synthesis procedure, which provides a regular morphology of the particles. These Sr2C-doped LaCoO3 particles have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, these Sr2C doped LaCoO3 particles have been demonstrated …

The Internet has made several giant leaps over the years, from a fixed to a mobile Internet, then to the Internet of Things, and now to a Tactile Internet. The Tactile Internet goes far beyond data, audio and video delivery over fixed and mobile networks, and even beyond allowing communication and collaboration among things. It is expected to enable haptic communications and allow skill set delivery over networks. Some examples of potential applications are tele-surgery, vehicle fleets, augmented reality and industrial process automation. Several papers already cover many of the Tactile Internet-related concepts and technologies, such as haptic codecs, applications, …
