Simulator Of Penicillin Fermentation Process In Matlab/Simulink Environment, Lingjian Ye, Jianghua Cheng Aug 2020

Simulator Of Penicillin Fermentation Process In Matlab/Simulink Environment, Lingjian Ye, Jianghua Cheng

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: For control and optimization of penicillin fermentation process, a suitable simulator should be developed. PenSim is a world-wide famous simulator for penicillin process, however, it can only generate process data for the purpose of analysis, but not applicable for the real-time control and production optimization. The internal models in Pensim were comprehensively investigated and a new penicillin fermentation simulator was developed in the environment of Matlab/Simulink. The simulator preserves highly kinetic identity with Pensim, yet allowing users to freely define the trajectories of control variables during operation (e.g. the feed rate of substrate), thus suitable for the study of …

Results show that the new approach can achieve simulation image of …

The Relationship Between Impact Energy And Glass Fracture Via .177 Caliber Steel Bbs, Jocenel Beach Aug 2020

The Relationship Between Impact Energy And Glass Fracture Via .177 Caliber Steel Bbs, Jocenel Beach

Student Theses

Fractured glass is often found at shooting scenes and can provide useful information for crime scene reconstruction. Mechanical glass fracture from a projectile impact can result in different types of fracture patterns. The degree of fracture depends on several factors including: type of glass, the thickness of the glass, curvature (if any), distance from the muzzle, contact angle, and type of projectile. Correlating impact energy to the degree of glass fracture can provide useful information regarding the muzzle-to-target distance for a particular firearm/ammunition combination. This research focuses on the projectile impact velocity of .177 steel BBs shot from a pneumatic …

Determining How Increasing Precipitation Intensity Will Impact Rangelands In Utah., Karen H. Beard, Andrew Kulmatiski

Browse all Datasets

As the atmosphere warms, precipitation events become larger, but less frequent. Yet, there is fundamental disagreement about how increased precipitation intensity will affect vegetation. Walter’s two-layer hypothesis and experiments testing it have demonstrated that precipitation intensity can increase woody plant growth. Observational studies have found the opposite pattern. Not only are the patterns contradictory, but inference is largely limited to grasslands and savannas. We tested the effects of increased precipitation intensity in a shrub-steppe ecosystem that receives >30% of its precipitation as snow. We used 11 (8 m x 8 m) shelters to collect and redeposit rain and snow as …

Estimation Of The Compaction Characteristics Of Soils Using The Static Compaction Method, Kamil Kayabali, Ramin Asadi̇, Mustafa Fener, Orhan Di̇kmen, Farhad Habi̇bzadeh, Özgür Aktürk Aug 2020

Estimation Of The Compaction Characteristics Of Soils Using The Static Compaction Method, Kamil Kayabali, Ramin Asadi̇, Mustafa Fener, Orhan Di̇kmen, Farhad Habi̇bzadeh, Özgür Aktürk

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

Ground improvement using mechanical stabilization is commonly applied by performing the standard Proctor compaction test, which requires a significant quantity of soil, usually obtained from open pits. A static compaction test is an alternative laboratory compaction test. Although researchers have shown that the results of miniature size static compaction tests are comparable with that of standard Proctor tests in terms of the maximum dry density and the optimum water content, no attempt has been made to compare the two fundamental properties of the compacted soil: undrained shear strength and hydraulic conductivity. The scope of this investigation was to estimate the …

Growing Season Air Mass Equivalent Temperature (TE) In The East Central Usa, Dolly Na-Yemeh, Rezaul Mahmood, Gregory Goodrich, Keri Younger, Kevin Cary, Joshua D. Durkee

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Equivalent temperature (TE), which incorporates both dry (surface air temperature, T) and moist heat content associated with atmospheric moisture, is a better indicator of overall atmospheric heat content compared to T alone. This paper investigates the impacts of different types of air masses on TE during the growing season (April–September). The study used data from the Kentucky Mesonet for this purpose. The growing season was divided into early (April–May), mid (June–July), and late (August–September). Analysis suggests that TE for moist tropical (MT) air mass was as high as 61 and 81 °C for the early and …

A Strategy To Predict The Global Warming Gas From Stock Farming —Potential Scaling Law Of The Released Methane From Livestock—, Toshiaki Nakashima, Tsuneyoshi Matsuoka, Yuji Nakamura

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

This work examines a scaling approach to predict the amount of methane released from the daily activity of livestock on farms. The subject animals are ruminants, i.e. having rumen or a ruminant stomach, that generates methane through digestion processes via several microbial fermentation steps. The produced methane is mixed into their breathing and released into the atmosphere. Existing data on methane released from various kinds of ruminant livestock were correlated as a power function of an animal’s weight, with an exponent near 0.92. This value is larger than a value of 0.75 which was related to the general metabolism rates …

Cracking During Flame Spread Over Pyrolyzing Solids, Yen Nguyen, Indrek S. Wichman, Thomas J. Pence Aug 2020

Cracking During Flame Spread Over Pyrolyzing Solids, Yen Nguyen, Indrek S. Wichman, Thomas J. Pence

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

A theoretical and numerical model for the degradation of solid materials in combustion is developed. As solid materials are heated by the flame, they undergo an internal thermo- chemical breakdown process known as pyrolysis. As the pyrolysis front propagates into the sample, a charring layer is left behind which contains voids, fractures and defects. Cracks propagate to release tensile stresses accumulated when the sample is losing mass. The crack front may precede the pyrolysis front into the sample. Crack patterns and fracture behaviors vary depending on material properties and heating level and distribution. Cracks cause loss of material integrity by …

The Model Area In Successful Lean Transformation And Scale Modeling, William Cooper, M. Abbot Maginnis, David Parsley, Kozo Saito

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

The True Lean System Program at the University of Kentucky was created in 1994 to study how the development of the Toyota Production System (TPS) contributes to Toyota’s success. This increased understanding of Toyota’s experience would provide useful guidance to Western companies taking on the challenges of replicating Toyota’s success within their own organizations. The common struggle point shared by the companies who come to us is their inability to establish sustainable TPS-based Lean transformations throughout their organizations. Our work with these companies along with our study of Toyota’s own experience in bringing TPS to its own American operations has …

Scale And Numerical Modeling To Determine Operating Points Of A Non-Clogging Vortecone Filter In Mining Operation, Ashish R. Kumar, Sampurna Arya, Adam Levy, Steven Schafrik, William C. Wedding, Kozo Saito

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

Numerical and scale modeling studies of Vortecone, a pressure-driven wet-scrubber device for the efficient capture of over-sprayed paint in the automobile industry, are presented. In this manuscript, Vortecone was tested for removing dust particles from underground mining operations. The pressures required to operate Vortecone and the airflow rates through the Vortecone are the two most important factors for mine ventilation systems. This study used dry, no-particle conditions to obtain relationship between these two parameters and then designed a Vortecone filter ventilation system for mining operations. Commercial software, SC/Flow, was used to generate the CFD model with unstructured meshes and a …

Scale Modeling Of Dust Capture Through A Flooded-Bed Dust Scrubber Integrated Within A Longwall Shearer, Sampurna Arya, Ashish Kumar, Kozo Saito, Thomas Novak, Adam Levy Aug 2020

Scale Modeling Of Dust Capture Through A Flooded-Bed Dust Scrubber Integrated Within A Longwall Shearer, Sampurna Arya, Ashish Kumar, Kozo Saito, Thomas Novak, Adam Levy

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

Meeting federal dust standards at a longwall mine face is among the more difficult challenges for a longwall mine operator. With recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The authors recommend the concept of controlling respirable and float dust, which is inherent in longwall mining, through the application of a flooded-bed dust scrubber to a longwall shearer. A full-scale physical model of a longwall shearer, modified with an integrated flooded-bed scrubber, was designed and fabricated at the University of Kentucky to measure the effects of a flooded-bed scrubber on dust capture …

The Behavior Of Micro Explosive Charge Underwater Explosion Near A Rigid Wall, Kazutaka Kitagawa, Atsushi Abe

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

The interactions between an underwater explosion and underwater structures is a research topic related to understanding strong impulsive forces for disaster preparation and prevention. This study is a part of series studying the behavior of underwater explosion bubbles near different boundaries and structures because understanding the boundary phases and the pulsation of bubbles could be a useful predictive tool. Micro explosive underwater explosions were conducted by detonating a very small amount of silver azide; the time evolution and attenuation of effects from the explosion were studied. Both numerical and experimental data were acquired and compared for underwater shock waves, gas …

Towards Scaling Laws For Ddt In Obstructed Channels, Elaine S. Oran, Vadim N. Gamezo Aug 2020

Towards Scaling Laws For Ddt In Obstructed Channels, Elaine S. Oran, Vadim N. Gamezo

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

In a coal mine, natural gas can leak through walls and accumulate in enclosed regions that are no longer being mined or ventilated. If there is an accidental spark in the region containing this gas, it can ignite a flame that may transition to detonation (DDT). An important problem is to assess if, when, and where DDT can occur, and thus provide information needed to design strong enough barriers to protect active mining areas. We describe results of numerical simulations of flame acceleration and DDT in obstacle-laden channels to find a scaling law for 𝐿DDT, the distance the …

Similitude Theory Applied To Plates In Vibroacoustic Field: A Review Up To 2020, Alessandro Casaburo, Giuseppe Petrone, Francesco Franco, Sergio De Rosa Aug 2020

Similitude Theory Applied To Plates In Vibroacoustic Field: A Review Up To 2020, Alessandro Casaburo, Giuseppe Petrone, Francesco Franco, Sergio De Rosa

Progress in Scale Modeling, an International Journal

Similitude methods are a set of tools which allow the design of scaled-up or scaled-down models of a full-scale structure called a prototype. In this way, the financial and temporal costs of experimental tests, and the problems associated with the set-up of too large (or small) test articles, may be overcome. This article provides a brief review of similitude methods applied to plates in a vibroacoustic field. Particularly, it is dedicated to a thorough analysis of similitude conditions and scaling laws for uncovering commonalities and differences, and physical interpretations, obtained from applying different scaling methods.

Ranking Comments: An Entropy-Based Method With Word Embedding Clustering, Yuyang Zhang Aug 2020

Ranking Comments: An Entropy-Based Method With Word Embedding Clustering, Yuyang Zhang

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Automatically ranking comments by their relevance plays an important role in text mining and text summarization area. In this thesis, firstly, we introduce a new text digitalization method: the bag of word clusters model. Unlike the traditional bag of words model that treats each word as an independent item, we group semantic-related words as clusters using pre-trained word2vec word embeddings and represent each comment as a distribution of word clusters. This method can extract both semantic and statistical information from texts. Next, we propose an unsupervised ranking algorithm that identifies relevant comments by their distance to the “ideal” comment. The …

Carbon Pricing Approaches For Climate Decisions In U.S. Higher Education: Proxy Carbon Prices For Deep Decarbonization, Alexander R. Barron, Breanna J. Parker, Susan Stratton Sayre, Shana S. Weber, Dano Weisbord

Environmental Science and Policy: Faculty Publications

Given the slow policy response by governments, climate leadership by other institutions has become an essential part of maintaining policy momentum, driving innovation, and fostering social dialogue. Despite growth in carbon pricing in government and the private sector, our review suggests low, but growing, adoption of internal carbon prices (ICPs) by higher education institutions (HEIs), who may be uniquely suited to implement and refine these tools. We analyze the range of ICP tools in use by eleven U.S. HEIs and discuss tradeoffs. Our analysis identifies several reasons why proxy carbon prices may be especially well-suited to decisions (especially at the …

Nano-fertilisers have only recently been introduced to intensify plant production, and there still remains inadequate scientific knowledge on their plant-related effects. This paper therefore compares the effects of two nano-fertilisers on common sunflower production under field conditions. The benefits arising from the foliar application of micronutrient-based zinc oxide fertiliser were compared with those from the titanium dioxide plant-growth enhancer. Both the zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) were delivered by foliar application in nano-size at a concentration of 2.6 mg·L−1. The foliar-applied nanoparticles (NPs) had good crystallinity and a mean size distribution under 30 nm. …
