Coupled Oscillators: Protein And Acoustics, Angelique N. Mcfarlane

Theses

This work encompassed three different vibrational energy transfer studies of coupled resonators (metal, topological, and microtubule comparison) inspired by the lattices of microtubules from regular and cancerous cells. COMSOL Multiphysics 5.4 was utilized to design the experiment. The simulation starts with an acoustic pressure study to examine the vibrational modes present in coupled cylinders, representing α-, β-tubulin heterodimers. The Metal Study consisted of 3 models (monomer, dimer, and trimer) to choose the correct height (40 mm) and mode (Mode 1) for study. The Topological Study was run to predict and understand how the lattice structure changes over a parametric sweep …

Edge Assignment And Data Valuation In Federated Learning, Thuy T. Do Aug 2022

Edge Assignment And Data Valuation In Federated Learning, Thuy T. Do

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations

Federated Learning (FL) is a recent Machine Learning method for training with private data separately stored in local machines without gathering them into one place for central learning. It was born to address the following challenges when applying Machine Learning in practice: (1) Communication cost: Most real-world data that can be useful for training are locally collected; to bring them all to one place for central learning can be expensive, especially in real-time learning applications when time is of the essence, for example, predicting the next word when texting on a smartphone; and (2) Privacy protection: Many applications must protect …

Efficient And Scalable Triangle Centrality Algorithms In The Arkouda Framework, Joseph Thomas Patchett Aug 2022

Efficient And Scalable Triangle Centrality Algorithms In The Arkouda Framework, Joseph Thomas Patchett

Theses

Graph data structures provide a unique challenge for both analysis and algorithm development. These data structures are irregular in that memory accesses are not known a priori and accesses to these structures tend to lack locality.

Despite these challenges, graph data structures are a natural way to represent relationships between entities and to exhibit unique features about these relationships. The network created from these relationships can create unique local structures that can describe the behavior between members of these structures. Graphs can be analyzed in a number of different ways including at a high level in community detection and at …

Influence Of Oyster Genetic Background On Levels Of Human-Pathogenic Vibrio Spp., Corinne Audemard, Kimberly S. Reece, Robert J. Latour, Lydia M. Bienlien, Ryan B. Carnegie

VIMS Articles

Human-pathogenic Vibrio bacteria are common inhabitants of oyster tissues, but our understanding of factors driving the wide range of concentrations found in individual oysters is extremely limited. We examined the influence of oyster sex and parasitism in light of their profound effects on oyster tissues against a backdrop of eastern oysters, Crassostrea virginica, from two diploid and two triploid aquacultured lines. This allowed us to examine not only the effect of oyster ploidy but also of oyster genetics, a factor never investigated with regard to human-pathogenic Vibrio species. We measured levels of total Vibrio vulnificus (vvhA), and of …

Frobenius Objects In The Category Of Spans, Ivan Contreras, Molly Keller, Rajan Amit Mehta Aug 2022

Frobenius Objects In The Category Of Spans, Ivan Contreras, Molly Keller, Rajan Amit Mehta

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

We consider Frobenius objects in the category Span, where the objects are sets and the morphisms are isomorphism classes of spans of sets. We show that such structures are in correspondence with data that can be characterized in terms of simplicial sets. An interesting class of examples comes from groupoids.

Our primary motivation is that Span can be viewed as a set-theoretic model for the symplectic category, and thus Frobenius objects in Span provide set-theoretic models for classical topological field theories. The paper includes an explanation of this relationship.

Given a finite commutative Frobenius object in Span, one can obtain …

A New Technique For Solving Neutral Delay Differential Equations Based On Euler Wavelets, Mutaz Mohammad, Alexander Trounev Aug 2022

A New Technique For Solving Neutral Delay Differential Equations Based On Euler Wavelets, Mutaz Mohammad, Alexander Trounev

All Works

An effective numerical scheme based on Euler wavelets is proposed for numerically solving a class of neutral delay differential equations. The technique explores the numerical solution via Euler wavelet truncated series generated by a set of functions and matrix inversion of some collocation points. Based on the operational matrix, the neutral delay differential equations are reduced to a system of algebraic equations, which is solved through a numerical algorithm. The effectiveness and efficiency of the technique have been illustrated by several examples of neutral delay differential equations. The main advantages and key role of using the Euler wavelets in this …

Exploiting Higher-Order Derivatives In Convex Optimization Methods, Dmitry Kamzolov, Alexander Gasnikov, Pavel Dvurechensky, Artem Agafonov, Martin Takac

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Exploiting higher-order derivatives in convex optimization is known at least since 1970’s. In each iteration higher-order (also called tensor) methods minimize a regularized Taylor expansion of the objective function, which leads to faster convergence rates if the corresponding higher-order derivative is Lipschitz-continuous. Recently a series of lower iteration complexity bounds for such methods were proved, and a gap between upper an lower complexity bounds was revealed. Moreover, it was shown that such methods can be implementable since the appropriately regularized Taylor expansion of a convex function is also convex and, thus, can be minimized in polynomial time. Only very recently …

Facile One-Step Solid-State Synthesis Of Ni-Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes For Lithium-Ion Batteries, Jing-Yue Wang, Rui Wang, Shi-Qi Wang, Li-Fan Wang, Chun Zhan

Journal of Electrochemistry

Nickel-rich layered oxide is one of the dominate cathode materials in the lithium ion batteries, due to its high specific energy density meeting the range requirement of the electric vehicles. Typically, the commercial Ni-rich layered oxides are synthesized from co-precipitated precursors, while precision control is required in the co-precipitation process to ensure the atomic level mixing of the cations such as Ni, Co and Mn, et.al. In this work, a one-step solid-state method was successfully applied to synthesize the Ni-rich layered oxide materials with ultra-high Ni content. By choosing the nickel hydroxides as the precursor with layered structure similar to …

Properties Of Meromorphic Spiral-Like Functions Associated With Symmetric Functions, Daniel Breaz, Luminița-Ioana Cotîrlă, Elangho Umadevi, Kadhavoor R. Karthikeyan

All Works

To consolidate or adapt to many studies on meromorphic functions, we define a new subclass of meromorphic functions of complex order involving a differential operator. The defined function class combines the concept of spiral-like functions with other studies pertaining to subclasses of multivalent meromorphic functions. Inclusion relations, integral representation, geometrical interpretation, coefficient estimates and solution to the Fekete-Szegö problem of the defined classes are the highlights of this present study. Further to keep up with the present direction of research, we extend the study using quantum calculus. Applications of our main results are given as corollaries.

Optimized Electrochemical Performance Of Si@C Prepared By Hydrothermal Reaction And Glucose Carbon Source, Si Chen, Song-Sheng Zheng, Lei-Ming Zheng, Ye-Han Zhang, Zhao-Lin Wang Aug 2022

Optimized Electrochemical Performance Of Si@C Prepared By Hydrothermal Reaction And Glucose Carbon Source, Si Chen, Song-Sheng Zheng, Lei-Ming Zheng, Ye-Han Zhang, Zhao-Lin Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Silicon (Si) has been considered as the potential material for the next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for its high capacity (4200 mAh·g-1, Li22Si5) and suitable working voltage (about 0.25 V vs. Li/Li+). However, the cycling stability and electrochemical performance of Si anode become significant challenges because of low intrinsic conductivity and huge volume variation (about 400%) during cycling processes. In addition, the repeated formation and destruction of surface solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film will continuously consume the electrolyte and cause damage to LIBs. Carbon (C) materials, such as graphite, carbon spheres and tubes, …

Morphological Network: Network With Morphological Neurons., Ranjan Mondal Dr. Aug 2022

Morphological Network: Network With Morphological Neurons., Ranjan Mondal Dr.

Doctoral Theses

Image processing with traditional approaches mainly use the tools of linear systems. However, linear approaches are not well suited and may even fail to solve problems involving geometrical aspects of the image. Thus, nonlinear geometric approaches like morphological operations are very popular in those cases. Morphological operations are nonlinear operations based on a set and lattice-theoretic methodology for image analysis that are capable of describing the geometrical structure of image objects quantitatively. It is suitable for various problems in image processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition. While solving problems with morphology, a particular structuring element is defined. Structuring elements have …

Constructions And Analyses Of Efficient Symmetric-Key Primitives For Authentication And Encryption., Sebati Ghosh Dr. Aug 2022

Constructions And Analyses Of Efficient Symmetric-Key Primitives For Authentication And Encryption., Sebati Ghosh Dr.

Doctoral Theses

In symmetric key cryptography there are two fundamental objectives, viz. 1. confidentiality or secrecy of message from unexpected party and 2. authentication of message which includes authenticating the source of the message as well as integrity of the message against any unwanted modification. Let us first concentrate on confidentiality. In classical symmetric key cryptography two parties, say Alice and Bob, first secretly exchange a key-pair (e, d). Later, if Alice wishes to send a secret message m ∈ M to Bob, she computes c = Ee(m) and transmits c to Bob. Upon receiving c, Bob computes Dd(c) = m and …

Quantitative Lithium Composite As 3d Lithium Foam Anode For Lithium Metal Battery, Hu-Dong Li, Wei-Shang Jia, Xin-Xiu Yan, Yao-Yue Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Lithium (Li) metal as an anode material for batteries has extremely high specific capacity and extremely low redox potential, which can significantly improve the energy density of the battery. However, the main problems faced by the use of Li metal anodes are Li dendrite growth, interfacial side reaction and volumetric change of electrode. Herein, a strategy to prepare the three-dimensional (3D) Li foam by combining 3D scaffold with quantitative Li was proposed to suppress Li dendrites growth and alleviate electrode volumetric change. The 3D Li foam facilitated the efficient utilization of Li metal by suppressing the Li dendrite growth, mitigating …

A Novel Electrochemical Sensor Based On Au/Rgo/Feooh For One-Step Detection Of Nitrite, Da-Juan Luo, Bing-Qian Liu, Meng-Yan Qin, Rong Gao, Li-Xia Su, Yong-Huan Su

Journal of Electrochemistry

Nitrite, a widespread raw material, is harmful to human health for long-term consumption. At present, the detection methods of nitrite mainly include chemical analysis, fluorescence, ultraviolet spectrophotometry and chromatography. These methods have ideal sensitivity and selectivity, but also have some characteristics: cumbersome operation, expensive equipment and professional personnel. Therefore, the development of a simple and sensitive nitrite assay is of great significance. In this paper, the Au/rGO/FeOOH composite materials, which revealed good synergistic catalytic performance among the three elements in the composite, were prepared by simple hydrothermal method and reduction method for the first time with large specific surface area …

Low-Crystallinity And Heterostructured Aupt-Ru@Cnts As Highly Efficient Multifunctional Electrocatalyst, Tuan-Jie Gan, Jian-Ping Wu, Shi Liu, Wen-Jun Ou, Bin-Ling Bin-Ling, Xiong-Wu Kang

Journal of Electrochemistry

The catalytic activity of the catalysts is strongly dependent on the structure of the catalysts, and the exploration of their correlation and structure-controlled synthesis of the high-performance catalysts are always at the central. Currently, platinum (Pt) is the optimum catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and alcohol oxidation reaction, while ruthenium (Ru) behaves as the champion catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during water splitting. Preparing alloy catalysts with these precious metals can modulate the catalytic activity of these catalysts from the perspective of strain effect, ensemble effect and ligand effect. Here, we developed a strategy …

Sr-Dcsk Cooperative Communication System With Code Index Modulation: A New Design For 6g New Radios, Yi Fang, Wang Chen, Pingping Chen, Yiwei Tao, Mohsen Guizani

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

This paper proposes a high-throughput short reference differential chaos shift keying cooperative communication system with the aid of code index modulation, referred to as CIM-SR-DCSK-CC system. In the proposed CIM-SR-DCSK-CC system, the source transmits information bits to both the relay and destination in the first time slot, while the relay not only forwards the source information bits but also sends new information bits to the destination in the second time slot. To be specific, the relay employs an N-order Walsh code to carry additional log2N information bits, which are superimposed onto the SR-DCSK signal carrying the decoded source information bits. …
