African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

This paper sought to identify and compare disciplinary emphases in data science curricula across South Africa’s 26 public universities using a website scoping review method. The key findings reveal that only 12 of the 26 universities offer data science programmes that are publicly accessible on their websites. Of those 12, only 5 offer data science at the undergraduate level, and these undergraduate programmes are objectified (entirely leaning) to the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Only seven of the universities offer a few non-STEM subjects with only one offering more non-STEM subjects compared to STEM subjects. The implications are …

Towards A Conceptual Model For Developing A Career Prediction System For Students’ Subject Selection At Secondary School Level, Moses Kamondo Tuhame, Gilbert Maiga, Annabella Habinka, Barbara Kayondo

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

Career choice prediction has been a complex phenomenon both in developed and developing countries. Though various theories that describe career prediction have emerged, their practical implementation in the form of a system has been hampered by the shortfalls that come along with each of them. However, there is no existing theoretically based holistic model that merges various theories that can inform the development of such a system in the developing world context. This paper, therefore, aims at proposing a holistic conceptual model that integrates a number of variables to inform the development of a career prediction system in the developing …

Towards The Development Of A Cost-Effective Image-Sensing-Smart-Parking Systems (Isensmap), Aakriti Sharma

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Finding parking in a busy city has been a major daily problem in today’s busy life. Researchers have proposed various parking spot detection systems to overcome the problem of spending a long time searching for a parking spot. These works include a wide variety of sensors to detect the presence of a vehicle in a parking spot. These approaches are expensive to implement and ineffective in extreme weather conditions in an outdoor parking environment. As a result, a cost-effective, dependable, and time-saving parking solution is much more desirable. In this thesis, we proposed and developed an image processing-based real-time parking-spot …

Inclusive design in information and communication technology (ICT) is the development of information and communication technology artifacts that are accessible and easy to use for as many people as possible. Human diversities must be considered when producing these inclusive design artifacts. It is not only important for abled people but also extends to people with disabilities, the elderly and anybody challenged with using these artifacts. Yet, few designers and developers adopt inclusive design methodologies in their practice. This study seeks to identify and understand the factors that influence the implementation of inclusive design practices in organisations. The methodology was based …

Proving Dirichlet's Theorem On Arithmetic Progressions, Owen T. Abma Aug 2022

Proving Dirichlet's Theorem On Arithmetic Progressions, Owen T. Abma

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

First proved by German mathematician Dirichlet in 1837, this important theorem states that for coprime integers a, m, there are an infinite number of primes p such that p = a (mod m). This is one of many extensions of Euclid’s theorem that there are infinitely many prime numbers. In this paper, we will formulate a rather elegant proof of Dirichlet’s theorem using ideas from complex analysis and group theory.

Institute for Earth and Space Exploration White Papers

Much like outer space, our legal system consists of many unknowns. This is especially true for new developments in emerging technologies, particularly those related to the exploration, exploitation, and utilization of space resources. The recently developed technical feasibility of space mining has advanced ahead of existing international space treaties. While certain articles of the major UN treaties can be interpreted to adapt to the utilization of space resources, most of these provisions were not originally designed to be applied to a space mining regime.

Keeping in mind this context, this paper sets out the current international law landscape, including the …

Mechanologic: Designing Mechanical Devices That Compute, Michelle Berry Aug 2022

Mechanologic: Designing Mechanical Devices That Compute, Michelle Berry

Dissertations - ALL

Despite their initial success and impact on the development of the modern computer, mechanical computers were quickly replaced once electronic computers became viable. Recently, there has been increased interest in designing devices that compute using modern and unconventional materials. In this dissertation, we investigate multiple ways to realize a mechanical device that can compute, with a main focus on designing mechanical equivalents for wires and transistors. For our first approach at designing mechanical wires, we present results on the propagation of signals in a soft mechanical wire composed of bistable elements. When we send a signal along bistable wires that …

Protection Against Contagion In Complex Networks, Pegah Hozhabrierdi Aug 2022

Protection Against Contagion In Complex Networks, Pegah Hozhabrierdi

Dissertations - ALL

In real-world complex networks, harmful spreads, commonly known as contagions, are common and can potentially lead to catastrophic events if uncontrolled. Some examples include pandemics, network attacks on crucial infrastructure systems, and the propagation of misinformation or radical ideas. Thus, it is critical to study the protective measures that inhibit or eliminate contagion in these networks. This is known as the network protection problem.

The network protection problem investigates the most efficient graph manipulations (e.g., node and/or edge removal or addition) to protect a certain set of nodes known as critical nodes. There are two types of critical nodes: (1) …

Science and Technology Department Faculty Journal Articles

Record of long-term land temperature changes remains ephemeral, discontinuous, and isolated, thus leaving the common view that Pleistocene land temperature evolution should have followed ocean temperatures unconfirmed. Here, we present a continuous land surface temperature reconstruction in the Asian monsoon region over the past 3.0 Myr based on the distribution of soil bacterial lipids from the Chinese Loess Plateau. The land temperature record indicates an unexpected warming trend over the Pleistocene, which is opposite to the cooling trend in Pleistocene ocean temperatures, resulting in increased land-sea thermal contrast. We propose that the previously unrecognized increase of land-sea thermal contrast during …

Distortion Estimates For Conformal Maps Predicated On Geometric Properties Of A Domain, Christopher G. Donohue Aug 2022

Distortion Estimates For Conformal Maps Predicated On Geometric Properties Of A Domain, Christopher G. Donohue

Dissertations - ALL

Geometric properties of a domain in the complex plane reflect important informationabout the conformal maps to and from the domain. We examine a variety of geometric properties and use them to construct explicit global distortion bounds for both the compression and stretching of conformal map. Compressive distortion is controlled when the modulus of the derivative of a complex function is bounded from below, expansive distortion when it is bounded above. For the initial set of results, we quantify the degree to which a convex domain is nearly round with two parameters; radii of the largest inscribed disk and smallest circumscribed …

Metalloproteins are the proteins that utilize metals or metal complexes as cofactors and exhibit a wide range of functions from oxygen transport and regulation of transcription to hydroxylation of alkanes and water splitting, even though they employ a limited set of metals and metal-binding ligands. The investigation of metalloprotein amino acid sequence, structure and function relationships can uncover the principles behind natural metalloprotein design and opens the possibility of their implication as scaffolds for the design of novel catalysts and biomaterials. Protein engineering is a set of techniques that allows to install new functionalities into existing proteins or to design …

Geometry Of Discrete And Continuous Bounded Surfaces, Kyung Eun Kim Aug 2022

Geometry Of Discrete And Continuous Bounded Surfaces, Kyung Eun Kim

Dissertations - ALL

We work on reconstructing discrete and continuous surfaces with boundaries using length constraints. First, for a bounded discrete surface, we discuss the rigidity and number of embeddings in three-dimensional space, modulo rigid transformations, for given real edge lengths. Our work mainly considers the maximal number of embeddings of rigid graphs in three-dimensional space for specific geometries (annulus, strip). We modify a commonly used semi-algebraic, geometrical formulation using Bézout's theorem, from Euclidean distances corresponding to edge lengths. We suggest a simple way to construct a rigid graph having a finite upper bound. We also implement a generalization of counting embeddings for …

Investigation Of Holographic Lattice Theories, Muhammad Asaduzzaman Aug 2022

Investigation Of Holographic Lattice Theories, Muhammad Asaduzzaman

Dissertations - ALL

The Anti-de Sitter/Conformal Field theory (AdS/CFT) correspondence, also known as holography, has been the focus of a great deal of interest and research for the last two decades. It has improved our understanding of general relativity and quantum field theories simultaneously through the interplay between these two different kinds of theories. However, there are still many aspects of holography that we do not understand or demand further analysis. Perturbative quantum field theory and perturbative metric expansion techniques are not equipped to investigate holography in some of the most interesting regimes such as the strongly interacting gravitational theory in anti-de Sitter …

Characterization Of End-Users’ Engagement And Interaction Experience With Social Media Technologies, Yemisi Oyedele, Darelle Van Greunen Aug 2022

Characterization Of End-Users’ Engagement And Interaction Experience With Social Media Technologies, Yemisi Oyedele, Darelle Van Greunen

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

People, particularly digital citizens, gain more technological experiences from their frequent usage of social media technologies. Their experience as end-users occurs before, during, and after their engagement and interaction with the technologies and is popularly described using behaviour-related definitions. However, an end-user's experience with technologies goes beyond the 'click-and-type" definition. This prompts the question, "what are the user experience elements that define and characterise end-users' engagement and interaction with social media technologies?". Using a case study-based approach, end-users' engagement and interaction with social media technologies were identified. The study's findings indicated that several user experience elements were characterised by emotions, …

Before Perseverance, Jezero crater's floor was variably hypothesized to have a lacustrine, lava, volcanic airfall, or aeolian origin. SuperCam observations in the first 286 Mars days on Mars revealed a volcanic and intrusive terrain with compositional and density stratification. The dominant lithology along the traverse is basaltic, with plagioclase enrichment in stratigraphically higher locations. Stratigraphically lower, layered rocks are richer in normative pyroxene. The lowest observed unit has the highest inferred density and is olivine-rich with coarse (1.5 millimeters) euhedral, relatively unweathered grains, suggesting a cumulate origin. This is the first martian cumulate and shows similarities to martian meteorites, which also …
