We conducted a range-wide investigation of the dynamics of site-level reproductive rate of northern spotted owls using survey data from 11 study areas across the subspecies geographic range collected during 1993–2018. Our analytical approach accounted for imperfect detection of owl pairs and misclassification of successful reproduction (i.e., at least one young fledged) and contributed further insights into northern spotted owl population ecology and dynamics. Both nondetection and state misclassification were important, especially because factors affecting these sources of error also affected focal ecological parameters. Annual probabilities of site occupancy were greatest at sites with successful reproduction in the previous year …

Coal Geology & Exploration
The technological concept of sand fracturing at the high pressure side is proposed against the present situation where the coal mine downhole operation space is small, the power and water supply capacities are limited, and the surface sand fracturing equipment cannot be applied directly in the coal mine downhole. On the basis of the principle of sand mixing and carrying through hydrodynamic impact, the continuous hydraulic sand fracturing equipment at the high pressure side was developed. Such equipment requires no external power source for sand mixing. It forms cyclone impact through the changes in the flow regime and flow field …

Coal Geology & Exploration
With the rapid development of mining, drilling and other technologies in the field of coal mine and the increasing demand for enhancing production and profit in the coal mine, the demand is increasingly urgent for detection of coal seam gas content in the initial stage. In recent years, the gas content measurement technology of underground long borehole high-pressure water sealed coring has been applied in the medium hard coal seam mining area with remarkable effects, but its application is limited in broken-soft coal seam. A number of issues are encountered that easy breakup of coal core sample, easy wall collapse …

Coal Geology & Exploration
Abstract: The deformation and destruction characteristics of frozen rock is a basic mechanical problem encountered during the construction using the freezing method. Under the action of load, the mechanical characteristics and deformation characteristics are greatly different for the rock with different freezing temperatures, which significantly affects the safety and stability of the freezing wall. Therefore, the study of the damage constitutive relation of the frozen rock is significant for instructing the freezing method design and construction. In order to analyze the whole process of the frozen rock deformation and destruction under load action, the Weibull distribution was adopted to describe …

Experimental Study On Power Matching Of Modular Double Pumping Stations Of Tunnel Drilling Rig, Lu Feifei, Fan Dong, Tian Hongliang
Coal Geology & Exploration
In order to solve the problems of heavy weight, relocation and transportation of the power pumping station of tunnel drilling rigs, it is proposed to divide the pumping station through modular design, and adopt the solution of small-displacement, dual-power and dual-pump confluence, effectively reducing the transportation size and weight of a single pump station. A single-pump station or a double-pump confluence is chosen according to the working conditions to improve the flexibility of the drilling rig and reduce energy consumption. The load-sensing system has the advantages of energy saving, good load adaptability, and convenient speed regulation. However, when the dual-load-sensing …

Collateral Damage From Agricultural Netting To Open-Country Bird Populations In Thailand, Rongrong Angkaew, Philip D. Round, Dusit Ngoprasert, Larkin A. Powell
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Nets are used across a wide variety of food production landscapes to control avian pests typically resulting in deaths of entangled birds. However, the impact of nets on bird populations is a human–wildlife conflict that remains mostly unquantified. Here, we examined the scale of netting in the central plains of Thailand, a region dominated by ricefields, among which aquaculture ponds are increasingly interspersed. Nets/exclusion types, number of individual birds and species caught were recorded on 1312 road-survey transects (2-km length × 0.4-km width). We also interviewed 104 local farmers. The transect sampling took place in late- September 2020, and from …

Entity resolutions the problem of finding duplicate data in a dataset and resolving possible differences and inconsistencies. ER is a long-standing data management and information retrieval problem and a core data integration and cleaning task. There are diverse solutions for ER that apply rule-based techniques, pairwise binary classification, clustering, and probabilistic inference, among other techniques. Deep learning (DL) has been extensively used for ER and has shown competitive performance compared to conventional ER solutions. The state-of-the-art (SOTA) ER solutions using DL are based on pairwise comparison and binary classification. They transform pairs of records into a latent space that can …
A Survey Of Stapling Methods To Increase The Affinity, Activity And Stability Of Ghrelin Analogues, Juan Esteban
A Survey Of Stapling Methods To Increase The Affinity, Activity And Stability Of Ghrelin Analogues, Juan Esteban
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The growth hormone secretagogue receptor (GHSR) is a G protein-coupled receptor which regulates various important physiological and pathophysiological processes in the body. Ghrelin is the primary high affinity endogenous ligand for GHSR and has limited secondary structure in solution, which makes it proteolytically unstable. This inherent instability in ghrelin can be overcome by incorporating helix-inducing staples that stabilize its structure and improve affinity and activity. We present an analysis of different stapling methods at positions 12 and 16 of ghrelin(1-20) analogues with the goal of increasing proteolytic stability and to retain or improve affinity and activity towards GHSR. Ghrelin(1-20) analogues …

As 3 billion pounds of herbicides are sprayed over farmlands every year, it is essential to advance our understanding how pesticides may influence neurological health and physiology of both humans and other animals. Studies are often one-dimensional as the majority examine glyphosate by itself. Farmers and the public use commercial products, like Roundup, containing a myriad of chemicals in addition to glyphosate. Currently, there are no neurological targets proposed for glyphosate and little comparison to Roundup. To investigate this, we compared how glyphosate and Roundup affect convulsant behavior in C. elegans and found that glyphosate and Roundup increased seizure-like behavior. …

We are creating a suite of tools and techniques based on optics to be used for teaching a variety of engineering topics. Each tool is intended for non-expert use and without the need for high-end equipment such as vibration-free optical tables. Here we report progress on three such tools: image-plane digital holography for measuring mechanical deformation; schlieren imaging of convective flows using a smart phone; and a simple optical communication protocol using LabVIEW. We will present the designs of the tools and preliminary results from teaching engineering labs and projects with these tools. Specific courses impacted to date include Fluid …
Duality For Asymptotic Invariants Of Graded Families, Michael Dipasquale, Thái Thành Nguyễn, Alexandra Seceleanu
Duality For Asymptotic Invariants Of Graded Families, Michael Dipasquale, Thái Thành Nguyễn, Alexandra Seceleanu
Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications
The starting point of this paper is a duality for sequences of natural numbers which, under mild hypotheses, interchanges subadditive and superadditive sequences and inverts their asymptotic growth constants.
We are motivated to explore this sequence duality since it arises naturally in at least two important algebraic-geometric contexts. The first context is Macaulay- Matlis duality, where the sequence of initial degrees of the family of symbolic powers of a radical ideal is dual to the sequence of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity values of a quotient by ideals generated by powers of linear forms. This philosophy is drawn from an influential paper of …

Separation Efficiency Of Different Methods In Treatment Of A Low-Grade Iron Ore, Özgür Özcan
Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration
In the present study, characterization and beneficiation tests were performed on an iron ore sample for the evaluation of separation efficiency (SE) of different methods. Results showed that the decrease in feed size fraction increases the SE irrespective of to beneficiation method. It was determined from the liberation analyses that the increase in SE values at finer size fractions is related with higher liberation. Calculated SE values revealed that operational parameters significantly affect the SE of all methods and the net forces acting on particles play an important role on SE of different size fractions. Mean SE of different size …
