High Mass Star Formation And Methanol Masers, Nathanael Wilson

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Class I and Class II methanol (CH3OH) masers are believed to be good indicators for regions where high mass stars are being formed. High mass stars are important because they inuence the evolution of the Galaxy, but many details of their formation remain unknown. I present an investigation into the association of Class I and Class II CH3OH masers with high mass star formation in our Galaxy, in particular the evolutionary stages at which they occur. To do so, I have compared data on high mass star forming regions from the ATLASGAL survey with catalogs of Class I and Class …

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces And Capacity Optimization: A Large System Analysis, Aris L. Moustakas, George C. Alexandropoulos, Mérouane Debbah

Machine Learning Faculty Publications

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), comprising large numbers of low-cost and almost passive metamaterials with tunable reflection properties, have been recently proposed as an enabling technology for programmable wireless propagation environments. In this paper, we present asymptotic closed-form expressions for the mean and variance of the mutual information metric for a multi-antenna transmitter-receiver pair in the presence of multiple RISs, using methods from statistical physics. While nominally valid in the large system limit, we show that the derived Gaussian approximation for the mutual information can be quite accurate, even for modest-sized antenna arrays and metasurfaces. The above results are particularly useful …

Forest Fire Effects On Landscape Snow Albedo Recovery And Decay, Max Gersh, Kelly E. Gleason, Anton Surunis

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Surface snow albedo (SSA) darkens immediately following a forest fire, while landscape snow albedo (LSA) brightens as more of the snow-covered surface becomes visible under the charred canopy. The duration and variability of the post-fire snow albedo recovery process remain unknown beyond a few years following the fire. We evaluated the temporal variability of post-fire snow albedo recovery relative to burn severity across a chronosequence of eight burned forests burned from 2000 to 2019, using pre- and post-fire daily, seasonal, and annual landscape snow albedo data derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MOD10A1). Post-fire annual LSA increased by 21% …

Rheological Characterization Of Blood-Mimicking Fluids For Use In Particle Image Velocimetry, Anorin S. Ali Aug 2022

Rheological Characterization Of Blood-Mimicking Fluids For Use In Particle Image Velocimetry, Anorin S. Ali

Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference

Blood-mimicking fluids (BMFs) are often used to investigate blood flow using physical replicas of vessels with cardiovascular disease. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is used with silicone poly-dimethyl siloxane (PDMS) vascular models to visualize this flow. The challenge is creating a blood-mimicking fluid that matches the viscosity profile, viscoelasticity, and density of whole blood while also matching the refractive index (RI) of PDMS. Water-glycerol solutions are commonly used with sodium iodide (NaI) added to increase the RI without changing viscosity. However, NaI is expensive, stains easily, and turns fluids from optically clear to yellow in less than a day. Furthermore, without …

Efficiency Of Singularity And Pca Mapping Of Mineralization-Related Geochemical Anomalies: A Comparative Study Using Bleg And <180Μm Stream Sediment Geochemical Data, Fatma Nuran Sönmez, Simay Koçkar, Hüseyin Yilmaz

Bulletin of the Mineral Research and Exploration

In gold (Au) exploration, the analysis of both bulk leach extractable gold (BLEG) and acid-extractable Au in the <180μm stream sediment fraction are the two most common approaches. The Eskişehir- Sivrihisar region in Western Türkiye hosts several orogenic type mineral deposits. The purpose of this study is to delineate geochemical anomalies of ore-related elements and track their dispersion, which may lead to discovery of unknown ore deposits. This research also compares the capability of conventional statistical and principal component analysis (PCA), with concentration area (C-A) and number-size/concentration (N-S/C) fractal methods as well as singularity index method to differentiate anomalous and background Au distributions. Known Au mineralization in the region of interest is strongly reflected in stream sediment BLEG Au patterns, which have robust singularity indices with C-A and N-S multifractal modeling and PCA. A hundred % of the Au deposits were detected using either BLEG Au and Ag singularity index mapping with C-A fractal analysis whereas the factor analysis of which revealed 85% efficiency. Several strong Au-Ag anomalies defined by the singularity index and factor analysis in this study requires further follow up for the discovery of new deposits.

The Missing Link Between Standing-And Traveling-Wave Resonators, Qi Zhong, Haoqi Zhao, Liang Feng, Kurt Busch, Sahin K. Özdemir, Ramy El-Ganainy

Michigan Tech Publications

Optical resonators are structures that utilize wave interference and feedback to confine light in all three dimensions. Depending on the feedback mechanism, resonators can support either standing-or traveling-wave modes. Over the years, the distinction between these two different types of modes has become so prevalent that nowadays it is one of the main characteristics for classifying optical resonators. Here, we show that an intermediate link between these two rather different groups exists. In particular, we introduce a new class of photonic resonators that supports a hybrid optical mode, i.e. at one location along the resonator the electromagnetic fields associated with …
