Does Use Of Gypsum Improve Soil Structure In Kentucky?, V. P. Evangelou, Kenneth L. Wells

Soil Science News and Views

Gypsum is sometimes recommended as a soil amendment in order to improve structure. Although this practice is often used for reclamation of sodic soils (Na+ saturated) in the western USA, it's value in improving soil structure in Kentucky is questionable. The following discussion explains way.

The Optimal Trajectory Modelling Of Robot Manipulators, Mary Claire Miller, Chung You Ho, Arlan R. Dekock May 1984

The Optimal Trajectory Modelling Of Robot Manipulators, Mary Claire Miller, Chung You Ho, Arlan R. Dekock

Computer Science Technical Reports

Greater robot capability can be achieved through the use of robot manipulator control systems. Crucial to the success of these control systems is the optimal trajectory modelling of the path traced by the end- effector. To create this optimal path the utilization of B-Spline curve functions will be investigated, and compared to Cubic Spline curve functions.

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen, Arlan R. Dekock, John Bruce Prater May 1984

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Modularity On Resource Consumption In Software Development, Alan D. Christiansen, Arlan R. Dekock, John Bruce Prater

Computer Science Technical Reports

Many authors have encouraged the use of modular programming techniques in software development. In fact, there is almost total agreement within industrial and academic circles that modularity is a desirable feature of any software package. Unfortunately, the desirability of modular design is almost always voiced without support from experimental evidence.

This paper consists of an experiment comparing the resource consumption of programmers based on the modularity practices employed during the design and programming phases of software development. The experiment tests the effectiveness of modularity in reducing psychological complexity of software.

The results of the research show that in some cases …

Temperature-Dependent Resistivity Of Highly Disordered Ni-Cr-Al Alloys , R. Hight, C. Plough, David J. Sellmyer May 1984

Temperature-Dependent Resistivity Of Highly Disordered Ni-Cr-Al Alloys , R. Hight, C. Plough, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Measurements are reported on the electrical resistivity of highly disordered Ni-Cr-Al films between 4.2 and 300 K. X-ray diffraction measurements show the films to be crystalline with a bcc structure. Negative temperature coefficients are observed and the resistivity data above about 50 K can be fitted by the expression ρ(T)=ρ0 [1-cln(T22)], where Δ depends on the heat treatment of the sample.

Critical Points In Low-Energy Positron-Atom Scattering, J. M. Wadehra, T. S. Stein, W. E. Kauppila May 1984

Critical Points In Low-Energy Positron-Atom Scattering, J. M. Wadehra, T. S. Stein, W. E. Kauppila

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Critical points, which represent minima in differential scattering cross sections as a function of scattering angle and incident projectile energy, are theoretically predicted for elastic scattering of low-energy positrons by Ar, Kr, and Xe. It is demonstrated that these points arise due to low-energy positron diffraction effects.

Short-Range And Infinite-Range Bond Percolation, Miron Kaufman, Mehran Kardar May 1984

Short-Range And Infinite-Range Bond Percolation, Miron Kaufman, Mehran Kardar

Miron Kaufman

A method for generalizing bond-percolation problems to include the possibility of infinite-range (equivalent-neighbor) bonds is presented. On Bravais lattices the crossover from nonclassical to classical (mean-field) percolation criticality in the presence of such bonds is described. The Cayley tree with nearest-neighbor and equivalent-neighbor bonds is solved exactly, and a nonuniversal line of percolation transitions with exponents dependent on nearest-neighbor bond occupation probability is observed. Points of logarithmic and exponential singularity are also encountered, and the behavior is interpreted as dimensional reduction due to the breaking of translational invariance by bonds of Cayley-tree connectivity.

Unbalanced Analysis Of Variance Comparing Standard And Proposed Approximation Techniques For Estimating The Variance Components, James P. Pugsley May 1984

Unbalanced Analysis Of Variance Comparing Standard And Proposed Approximation Techniques For Estimating The Variance Components, James P. Pugsley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper considers the estimation of the components of variation for a two-factor unbalanced nested design and compares standard techniques with proposed approximation procedures. Current procedures are complicated and assume the unbalanced sample size to be fixed. This paper tests some simpler techniques, assuming sample sizes are random variables. Monte Carlo techniques were used to generate data for testing of these new procedures.

Coral Reef Islands And Their Problems, Peter C. Schroeder May 1984

Coral Reef Islands And Their Problems, Peter C. Schroeder

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Small islands and in particular those more or less dependent on their reefs as a resource were often self-contained units, maintaining a fragile equilibrium in which even small changes could and have wrought fatal disturbances. The pressures of the modern world have endangered these vulnerable units economically, socially, and biologically. In all instances the "'population factor has played an important role. Coral reef islands appear to be more susceptible to the side effects of rapidly growing modernization than other types of islands. No clear answer or solution to this problem can be given but recognition of the threats to them …

The Emerging Regime Of Islands As Archipelagic States, Frank Gable May 1984

The Emerging Regime Of Islands As Archipelagic States, Frank Gable

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

This essay will discuss the significance of islands as archipelagos, i.e. any two or more islands identified politically as one entity. Within the body of this report will be references regarding the historical background to archipelagos and how they emerged into international topics of law. Further, the differences international law affords coastal archipelagos as opposed to outlying mid-ocean archipelagos will be interpreted. These differences include, for instance, the design of baselines used to enclose territorial waters. As the paper progresses, the reader will being to see how the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS (III) …

Seasonal And Spatial Heterogeneity In The Limnetic Zooplankton Community Of Lake Mead, Gene Robert Wilde May 1984

Seasonal And Spatial Heterogeneity In The Limnetic Zooplankton Community Of Lake Mead, Gene Robert Wilde

Publications (WR)

Zooplankton samples collected from throughout Lake Mead, in 1981-1982, demonstrate the presence of a statistically significant seasonal and spatial heterogeneity in zooplankton densities. Seasonally, the major zooplankton groups were most abundant in the spring and fall, coincident with maxima in chlorophyll-a concentrations. Successions among the various rotifers, cladocerans and copepods present in the reservoir were influenced by food availability, diapause, predation by planktivorous fish and, possibly, water temperatures.

Spatial heterogeneity in zooplankton densities was unrelated to water temperature, pH, conductivity and dissolved oxygen concentrations, but was related to the abundance of phytoplankton (chlorophyll-a concentrations) and fish. Statistical analyses indicate that …

The Role Of Nannoplankton In The Phytoplankton Dynamics Of Four Colorado River Reservoirs (Lakes Powell, Mead, Mohave, And Havasu), Jeffrey John Janik May 1984

The Role Of Nannoplankton In The Phytoplankton Dynamics Of Four Colorado River Reservoirs (Lakes Powell, Mead, Mohave, And Havasu), Jeffrey John Janik

Publications (WR)

Phytoplankton species composition and community size structure were studied in four warm-monomictic Colorado River reservoirs; lakes Powell, Mead, Mohave, and Havasu from March 1981 to February 1982. Sampling was done at approximately monthly intervals from several stations in each reservoir. The Utermohl technique was used to enumerate phytoplankton. The phytoplankton assemblage was divided into the following six size classes using microscopic techniques; netplankton (>64 um), and nannoplankton (>5, 5-11, 12-21, 22-44, and 45-64 um).

Total phytoplankton biomass and community size structure were different among these four reservoirs with considerable spatial and temporal variation present. Average reservoir-wide areal weighted …

A physiological ecologist, as the name suggests, focuses on the interface between plant physiology and the ecology of individual organisms. Yet, one in this field should know something about disciplines ranging from physiology, or in the case of the subject of this lecture, even photochemistry, to the study of entire ecosystems.

Particle Simulation Of Compression Waves, Donald Greenspan May 1984

Particle Simulation Of Compression Waves, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

Compression waves are studied using a quasi-molecular, particle approach. Explosive type disturbances are simulated to generate such waves, which propagate by the interaction of each particle with its immediate neighbors. Obstacles to wave motions are studied by the introduction of variable densities. Computer examples are described and discussed.
