Axiomatic Structure And The Method Of Analysis: Shifting Styles In The History Of Mathematics, Calvin Jongsma Jun 1979

Axiomatic Structure And The Method Of Analysis: Shifting Styles In The History Of Mathematics, Calvin Jongsma

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1979

This article surveys the different views of mathematical methodology that occurred from ancient Greek times through the early modern period up until its codification around 1900. After summarizing the axiomatic approach advocated by Aristotle and implemented in mathematics by Euclid, the talk explores the character of analysis in ancient Greek times, its development into a symbolic algebra by Viete and Descartes, and its expansion into a calculus of fluxions and differentials by Newton and Leibniz. The article concludes by touching on the recovery and transformation of the deductive ideal for mathematics by Pasch, Peano, and Hilbert during the late nineteenth …

Two Philosophical Problems About Mathematics, Stephen Barker Jun 1979

Two Philosophical Problems About Mathematics, Stephen Barker

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1979

Mathematics is a flourishing field of human endeavor, a field that is accorded great respect and high standing. For 2500 years or more, many of the best minds available have worked in this field; and the results produced have indirectly been of enormous value to other fields, such as physics, engineering, architecture, economics, and so on. But with is mathematics about? Physics studies moving bodies; engineering studies bridges; architecture studies buildings; economics studies commercial behavior: here there are phenomena we can point to that constitute the subject matter. But what does mathematics study? If you answer “Numbers”, or “Abstract types …

Co2 Laser-Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Jeffrey Joseph Rusik Jun 1979

Co2 Laser-Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Jeffrey Joseph Rusik

Honors Theses

Gasgeous freon 113, or CC12FCC1F2, was irradiated with a continous wave carbon dioxide infared laser. The rat of formation of CF2CC1F, a decomposition product, was monitored using an infared spectrometer. The initial rates or product formation were related to irradiation wavelength and power, and the laser induced reaction was related to pyrolysis decomposition. A computer program which calculates the temperatures in a laser beam is modified and applied to the irradiations performed. It is determined that bi- or triphotonic absorption is occuring and that the laser induced reactions are photocatalyzed. A reaction model is discussed which combines thermal excitation, multiphotonic …

Ozonolysis Of Certain Alpha, Beta-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds, Alan Howard Wynn Jun 1979

Ozonolysis Of Certain Alpha, Beta-Unsaturated Carbonyl Compounds, Alan Howard Wynn

Honors Theses

One of the intermediates in the ozonolysis of alkynes is the α carbonyl carbonyl oxide. The Hull rearrangment mechanism suggests that the α carbonyl carbonyl oxide can then rearrange via a rotation and cuclization to an anhydride.

Synthesis Of Sterically Hindered Disasters, Richard A. Bankowitz Jun 1979

Synthesis Of Sterically Hindered Disasters, Richard A. Bankowitz

Honors Theses

This thesis examines the synthesis of two sterically hindered diesters, neopentyl glycol dipivaloate and ditert-butyl 2, 2-diethylmalonate. The implications of this hinderance for hydrolysis in basic medium are discussed. The neopentyl glycol diester of 2,2-dimethylpropanoic acid is prepared with little difficulty by reaction of the glycol with the acid chloride in the presence of pyridine. The process gives the desired ester in approximately 66% yield. The preparation of the ditert-butyl ester of diethylmalonic acid is also attempted by means of the acid chloride in the presence of pyridine. Preparation of the diethylmalonyl dichloride using acetonitrile as a solvent in most …

Preparation And Kinetics Of Chloro-1,4,7-Triethyldiethylenetriamine Gold (Iii), Paul Lawrence Sargent

Honors Theses

The square-planar complex has been synthesized and its aqueous solution chemistry investigated. The rate of bromide substitution for chloride has been studied along with the rate of the chelate un-wrapping reaction for the bromo-complex. These results aer compared with work on previously studied gold complexes.

Calculation Of Mono-Cyclic Molecular Structures Using Mindo/3, Peter Mark Felker Jun 1979

Calculation Of Mono-Cyclic Molecular Structures Using Mindo/3, Peter Mark Felker

Honors Theses

Molecular geometries of selected, small cyclic compounds were calculated using the semi-epirical, S.C.F. molecular orbital method MINDO/3. Calculated geometries are compared with experiemental values to determine MINDO/3's effectiveness. It is found that the method has several systematic deficiencies. In Particular, carbon-oxygen single bond distances are calculated to be too short.

Study Of Cndo/2 For The Prediction Of Geometries Of Phosphorus-Containing Molecules, Mark A. Fraser

Honors Theses

The method of CNDO/2 is presently being used to study the mechanisms of hydrolysis of phosphate esters. The question, therefore, arises whether or not CNDO/2 can accurately predict the geometries of phosphorus containing molecules. Using an optimizer adapted from the method of Rosenbrock, 41 compounds were tested.

Examination Of The Acid Etching Process Used In Preventative Dentistry, Robert Charles Morgan Jun 1979

Examination Of The Acid Etching Process Used In Preventative Dentistry, Robert Charles Morgan

Honors Theses

Nuva-Seal is a bisphenol-A-glycidyl-methacrylate monomer which in its polymerized form seals a tooth to prevent carie formation. Prior to application the tooth surface is pretreated with an etching solution to increase the bond strength. The etchant solution is 50% by weight H3PO4 and 7% by weight Zn0. Previous investigations preformed at Union College have determined qualitatively that a substantial portion of enamel is removed by the acid pretreatment. In addition, an extensive literature search into the development of the etching process was performed in order to validate or repute its usefulness.

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Protection of the environment requires effective regulatory actions which are based on ssound technical and scientific information. This information must include the quantitative description and linking of pollutant sources, transport mechanisms, interactions, and resulting effects on man and his environment. Because of the complexities involved, assessment of specific pollutants in the environment requires a total systems approach which transcends the media of air, water, and land. The Environmental Monitoring and Support Laboratory-Las Vegas contributes to the formation and enhancement of a sound monitoring data base for exposure assessment through programs designed to:

  • develop and optimize systems and strategies for monitoring …

The magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams are reported. All magnetic measurements were recorded on a superconducting susceptometer. The bicritical points are 6.25 K, 14.5 kOe (A=Cs+), 9.75 K, 17.8 KOe (A=Rb+). …

A New Approach To Computer Oriented, Quasi-Quantum Mechanical Dynamics, Donald Greenspan Jun 1979

A New Approach To Computer Oriented, Quasi-Quantum Mechanical Dynamics, Donald Greenspan

Mathematics Technical Papers

A new approach to atomic and molecular dynamics is developed which combines both quantum and classical concepts. Applications are made to the hydrogen atom, the hydrogen ion, and the hydrogen molecule. An accurate computer technique for the approximation of bond lengths is developed and illustrative examples of electron motions are described and discussed. Uncertainty results naturally from a mathematical statement of total system energy, which is always quantized. Angular momentum can be zero and need not be quantized, thereby avoiding inconsistencies of Bohr-Sommerfeld type models.

Acute Biological Effects Of Chemically Dispersed Oil Spillage : Final Report To The American Petroleum Institute, George C. Grant, Howard I. Kator, Paul L. Zubkoff Jun 1979

Acute Biological Effects Of Chemically Dispersed Oil Spillage : Final Report To The American Petroleum Institute, George C. Grant, Howard I. Kator, Paul L. Zubkoff

Reports

Primary productivity, heterotrophic potential, chlorophyll i! and phaeophytin, ATP, and direct bacterial counts were measured in the sea surface layer under controlled spills of La Rosa and Murban crude oils following immediate dispersal with the EXXON dispersant, Corexit 9527. Tests were conducted off New York on November 9, 1978.

The response of productivity to dispersed oil appeared as an initial increase in rates, a reduction to minimal rates 1-2 hours after dispersion, and a return to pre-spill rates after 3 hours. Comparison of productivity measurements from the two tests suggested a more efficient and rapid dispersion of the somewhat lighter …

Geology, Characteristics, And Resource Potential Of The Low-Temperature Geothermal System Near Midway, Wasatch County, Utah, James F. Kohler Jun 1979

Geology, Characteristics, And Resource Potential Of The Low-Temperature Geothermal System Near Midway, Wasatch County, Utah, James F. Kohler

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Recent awareness of the finite nature of fossil-fuel resources has resulted in an increased interest in alternate sources of energy such as geothermal. To evaluate the geothermal energy potential of the hot springs system near Midway, Wasatch Co., Utah, consideration was given to heat flow, water chemistry, and structural controls.

Abnormal heat flow was indicated qualitatively by snow-melt patterns and quantitatively by heat-flow measurements that were obtained from two of four temperature-gradient wells drilled in the area. These measurements indicated that the area north of the town of Midway is characterized by heat flow equal to 321.75 mW/m2, which is …

Ab Initio Treatment Of Final-State Spin-Orbit Interactions: Photoionization Of The 6S Electron In Cesium, Keh-Ning Huang, Anthony F. Starace Jun 1979

Ab Initio Treatment Of Final-State Spin-Orbit Interactions: Photoionization Of The 6S Electron In Cesium, Keh-Ning Huang, Anthony F. Starace

Anthony F. Starace Publications

Ab initio theoretical calculations are presented for the cross section, photoelectron angular distribution, and photoelectron spin polarization resulting from photoionization of the 6s electron of cesium. Starting from an initial basis of nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock wave functions, the effect of final-state spin-orbit interaction in the Breit-Pauli approximation is treated exactly. The effect of core relaxation is also examined. Our calculated results agree with recent experimental measurements of the photoionization cross section and the photoelectron spin polarization. Comparison is made with other theoretical calculations. Finally, the length form of the electric dipole interaction operator is shown to be consistent with gauge invariance …

Treatment Of Persistent Open-Bite Malocclusions With Interarch Elastic Fixation, Kent L. Phillips Jun 1979

Treatment Of Persistent Open-Bite Malocclusions With Interarch Elastic Fixation, Kent L. Phillips

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the facial complex after treatment of persistent anterior open-bites with Dr. R. M. Ricketts' "squeeze treatment." This treatment method requires heavy elastic fixation for one month in conjunction with placement of T-loop arches.

Twelve open-bite patients were selected for the study. Quantative[sic] measurements from lateral cephalometric and laminagraphs of the temporomandibular joint were also evaluated. Qualitative observations were obtained from the periapical radiographs, models, and photos.

Tooth extrusion occurred in varying amounts followed by alveolar crest and apical repair.

Statistical significance was shown in the correction of incisor overbite, …

Fatigue Properties Of Orthodontic Wire, Kirkland B. Reuer Jun 1979

Fatigue Properties Of Orthodontic Wire, Kirkland B. Reuer

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Fracture of orthodontic appliances can be a problem because of the time involved to replace and repair them. It has been shown that most failures have been a result of fatigue fracture, i.e., failure resulting from cyclic loading.

The purpose of this study was to determine what effect variation of the type of orthodontic wire and heat treatment had on fatigue resistance. A device was constructed to put a cyclic load on a piece of wire until fracture. Two types of cobalt-chromium alloy wire (Blue and Green Elgiloy from Rocky Mountain Orthodontics) and three types of stain less steel wire …

The Effect Of Primary Nursing On Nurse Job Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Care, Karen Garrison Jun 1979

The Effect Of Primary Nursing On Nurse Job Satisfaction And Patient Satisfaction With Nursing Care, Karen Garrison

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nursing as a profession has seen the loss of large numbers of practitioners through job dissatisfaction. In addition, recent studies testing professional growth among new graduates have demonstrated negative findings. Lack of responsibility and accountability have been indicated as potential causes of these problems which confront professional nursing.

In nursing modalities such as functional, case method and team nursing the lack of autonomy in providing care is visible. The team nursing approach fragments patient care; a nurse in this system is responsible for team members rather than directly for patients. The registered nurse does not have enough personal contact in …
