The Concentration And Speciation Of Sugars In Natural Waters, Minoo Shakerin Sweet May 1979

The Concentration And Speciation Of Sugars In Natural Waters, Minoo Shakerin Sweet

Dissertations and Theses

Due to the importance of carbohydrates in biological systems, many efforts have been made to develop a quantitative method for analysis of carbohydrates in natural waters. The low concentrations of dissolved sugars in natural waters require a sensitive analytical method. In this study, gas chromatography of alditol acetate derivatives of sugars was investigated for quantitative and qualitative analysis of individual dissolved sugars in natural waters. The alditol acetate derivatives of sugars give only one derivative for each sugar, yielding qualitative and quantitative results.

The detection limit was 25 nM for each sugar. Because of this very low detection limit, only …

Surface Tensions Of Molten Salt Mixtures, Jerry Goodisman May 1979

Surface Tensions Of Molten Salt Mixtures, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

It is always found that the surface tension of a mixture of molten salts lies below the mean of the surface tensions of the pure components, weighted by mole fractions. Part of this effect is certainly due to the well-known fact that the composition near the surface is enriched in the component of lower surface tension. We show that an effect of the long-range forces, present for fluids involving Coulombic interactions, is of greater importance. The effect is due to the electroneutrality constraint on the distribution functions. As we show by separate calculations, both effects must be considered to obtain …

Geology Of The Galisteo Formation, Hagan Basin, New Mexico, Timothy Walker Gorham May 1979

Geology Of The Galisteo Formation, Hagan Basin, New Mexico, Timothy Walker Gorham

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

In north-central New Mexico the Hagan basin contains the thickest (261 to 1,295 m) and least deformed section of the Eocene Galisteo Formation. The Galisteo unconformably overlies sandstone and carbonaceous shale of the Mesaverde Group (Upper Cretaceous) and provides a record of late Laramide (Eocene) tectonics in this part of the Rocky Mountains.

The Galisteo Formation contains a complex fluvial sequence of abundant red to green mudstone, with varying amounts of red to white laterally continuous and discontinuous sandstone, and buff to white conglomeratic sandstone. Sedimentary structures and facies relationships in seven coarse-grained Galisteo members indicate that the Galisteo Formation …

Resonant Contributions To Single Charge Transfer Between He++ And He, J. N. Bardsley, James S. Cohen, J. M. Wadehra

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Energy levels and lifetimes are calculated for the resonant states that are important in radiative single charge transfer in He2+-He collisions at thermal energies. The resonant contribution to the charge-transfer rate decreases with increasing temperature and is approximately 12% of the total rate at 300 K.

The Matrix Of Unequilibrated Ordinary Chondrites: Implications For The Origin And Subsequent History Of Chondrites, Gary Robert Huss May 1979

The Matrix Of Unequilibrated Ordinary Chondrites: Implications For The Origin And Subsequent History Of Chondrites, Gary Robert Huss

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

The matrices of fourteen unequilibrated (type 3 and 3, 4) ordinary chondrites (all witnessed falls) were analyzed using transmitted and reflected light microscopy, electron microprobe analysis, and instrumental neutron activation analysis. The matrix is defined as the fine-grained silicate material between chondrules, chondrule fragments, other distinct silicate grains, and Fe-Ni and troilite grains. It makes up about 13 percent of each meteorite. Although all meteorites in this study have been altered to some extent since their formation, those with least alteration indicate that the unaltered matrix had submicron grain size, a clastic texture, and was friable even though interstitial pore …

Magnetic Properties Of Iron-Doped Layer-Structure Dichalcogenides , S.J. Hillenius, R.V. Coleman, E.R. Domb, David J. Sellmyer

David Sellmyer Publications

Magnetic-susceptibility measurements have been made on dilute excess Fe alloys of the layer-structure crystals TaSe2, NbSe2, and TaS2. The 2H selenides show local-moment formation and obey a Curie-Weiss law in the range 300-30 K with effective moments in the range (2.5-4.5)μB. For 2H-FexTaSe2 a strong susceptibility maximum is observed at low temperature and at low fields the maximum has a cusplike shape characteristic of a "spin-glass" type transition. The temperature of the maximum scales approximately linearly with Fe concentration and reaches 13 K for x=0.10. …

Estimation Of Floods When Runoff Originates From Nonhomogeneous Sources, David Ray Olson May 1979

Estimation Of Floods When Runoff Originates From Nonhomogeneous Sources, David Ray Olson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Extreme value theory is used as a basis for deriving a distribution function for flood frequency analysis when runoff originates from nonhomogeneous sources. A modified least squares technique is used to estimate the parameters of the distribution function for eleven rivers. Goodness-of-fit statistics are computed and the distribution function is found to fit the data very well.

The derived distribution function is recommended as a base method for flood frequency analysis for rivers exhibiting nonhomogeneous sources of runoff if further investigation also proves to be positive.

Information Transfer And Regulation In A Model Ecosystem With Environmental Stochasticity, M. Mckee May 1979

Information Transfer And Regulation In A Model Ecosystem With Environmental Stochasticity, M. Mckee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The concept of regulation in ecosystems has been given considerable attention in the ecological literature, but no formal treatment has been offered. This study proposes a rigorous definition of regulation which is derived from the mathematics of information and communication theory. A theoretical, mathematical equivalent of the definition is also offered which implies serious limitations as to the value of most traditional laboratory population studies and deterministic population models in understanding regulation in ecosystems. The empirical validity of this theoretical equivalence is tested through use of a competition model of two diatoms. Other observations concerning the relationship between environmental variability …

Charged Membrane, Low Pressure Ultrafiltration To Treat Acid Mine Drainage Waters, Dibakar Bhattacharyya, Robert B. Grieves, Shiela Shelton

KWRRI Research Reports

Low-pressure ultrafiltration with negatively-charged, non-cellulosic membranes is shown to be a feasible process in terms of achieving the simultaneous separation of dissolved metals (and sulfate) and of suspended solids from acid mine drainage water. The process is evaluated in terms of the simultaneous achievement of good water flux without membrane fouling and of adequate ultrafiltrate quality at high water recovery for water reuse operation.

At a transmembrane pressure of 5.6 x 105 N/m2, water fluxes in the range of 5.8 x 10-4 cm/sec to 12.5 x 10-4 cm/sec could be obtained at 97% water recovery. …

Gloucerstermen: Before And After "The Law", William S. Weber May 1979

Gloucerstermen: Before And After "The Law", William S. Weber

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

Gloucester has been renowned for its leadership in the fishing industry since colonial days. From the first failure of the Dorchester Company at Stage Fort to the subsequent glories of the schooner fleets, the story has been told in fact, fiction, poetry, and painting. The literature brings to life the beauty of the place, the dangers of the sea,and the character building of those who contested life in the North Atlantic. Most of our recorded material deals with the exploits of Yankees, Portuguese, Scandinavians, and Nova Scotians. Today, and in the immediate past, it is the Italian-American fishermen who dominate …

The western Ambler Schist Belt is located in the southern Brooks Range of Alaska and is defined in this study as that part of the Brooks Range schist belt which contains abundant bimodal volcanic, volcaniclastic and related carbonate sediments. The schist belt appears to be the basinal part of Middle Devonian through Mississippian shelf-slope-basin sequence. To the south of the schist belt are upper Paleozoic-Mesozoic (?) ophiolite overlain by Cretaceous greywackes and calc-alkalic intrusives and related extrusives. These two distinct terrains are juxtaposed along a suspected continental suture, the Angayucham-Cosmos Hills-Jade Mountain belt, on with a minimum of 115 km …

The Use Of The Welsh Language As A Measurement Of The Dimensions Of "Welshness", Jerry Clyde Phillips May 1979

The Use Of The Welsh Language As A Measurement Of The Dimensions Of "Welshness", Jerry Clyde Phillips

Geography ETDs

The idea that Welsh speakers and non-Welsh speakers will respond differently to questions designed to measure the degree of feelings of "Welshness" of the two groups was investigated. The data were gathered by the use of a specially designed questionnaire administered to 404 randomly selected respondents. Four assumptions were considered: (1) Welsh speakers will identify more closely with other Welsh speakers, they will show a preference for writers who write in the Welsh language, and they will show a heightened sense of a feeling defined as "Welshness"; (2) Welsh speakers will more vigorously support the use of the Welsh language …

Some Effects Of A Grazer, Hyalella Azteca On Ecosystem Level Properties In Aquatic Microcosms, Martin D. Werner May 1979

Some Effects Of A Grazer, Hyalella Azteca On Ecosystem Level Properties In Aquatic Microcosms, Martin D. Werner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A study to determine some ecosystem level effects of an aquatic invertebrate grazer, Hyalella azteca, was performed in aquatic ix microcosms. Impact of the grazer was assessed in three general areas: 1) inorganic nutrient levels of the microcosm water column, 2) productivity and respiration of the biotic community, and 3) plant community composition in the microcosms.

The grazing amphipod caused inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen (except ammonia) levels to be elevated in the microcosms. The increase was due, at least partially, to excretion of nutrients into the water by the amphipod. The presence of H. azteca did not significantly …
