Zoogeography Of Tropical Western Atlantic Crinoidea (Echinodermata), David L. Meyer, Charles G. Messing, Donald B. Macurda Jr.

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Recent collections of crinoids from the intertidal zone to 1,650 m in the tropical western Atlantic have provided significant range extensions for more than half of the 44 comatulid and stalked species known from the region. Of the 34 comatulid species, over 60% are endemic to the region; of the 10 stalked species, 90% are endemic. At the familial level, this fauna has its strongest affinities with the tropical Indo-Pacific region. Comatulids are most abundant above 300 m, while stalked species occur primarily between 100 and 700 m. Species that occur primarily above 600 m (the deepest penetration of the …

Representation Of Ab Initio Energy Surfaces By Analytic Functions, R.L. Vance, Gordon A. Gallup Jul 1978

Representation Of Ab Initio Energy Surfaces By Analytic Functions, R.L. Vance, Gordon A. Gallup

Gordon Gallup Publications

A method for the analytical representation of ab initio energy surface results is described. For a three-atom surface, the potential function is written as a sum of atomic, two-body, and three-body terms. This allows an easy fitting of the whole surface, including the dissociated and united atom limits. The theory is applied to an H3 surface of limited accuracy calculated for these purposes. Comparisons are made, where possible, with more accurate calculations. Extensions to surfaces involving four or more atoms are also discussed.

Angular Differential Cross Sections For 25-, 50-, And 100-Kev-Proton Excitation Of Helium To The N=2 Level, John T. Park, Jacob M. George, Jerry Peacher, Judith E. Aldag Jul 1978

Angular Differential Cross Sections For 25-, 50-, And 100-Kev-Proton Excitation Of Helium To The N=2 Level, John T. Park, Jacob M. George, Jerry Peacher, Judith E. Aldag

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Differential cross sections for 25-, 50-, and 100-keV-proton excitation of helium to the n=2 level have been determined for center-of-mass scattering angles from 0 to 1.2 mrad. The cross sections were obtained from an analysis of the angular distribution of the scattered protons which had lost an energy corresponding to the excitation of the helium target to its n=2 level. The differential cross section is very sharply peaked in the forward direction and decreases by a factor of 45 in 1.0 mrad at 25 keV and by a factor of 650 in 1.0 mrad at 100 keV. The data are …

Existence And Comparison Theorems For Differential Equations In Banach Spaces, V. Lakshmikantham, K. Deimling

Mathematics Technical Papers

In our recent paper [3] we have studied the existence of maximal and minimal solutions to the IVP in a Banach space [see pdf for notation]. (1) [see pdf for notation] where [see pdf for notation] maps [see pdf for notation] into [see pdf for notation], with [see pdf for notation] and [see pdf for notation] a cone. The essential hypotheses have been that [see pdf for notation]f is quasimonotone with respect to [see pdf for notation] and that [see pdf for notation] and [see pdf for notation] have some natural properties. If such extremal solutions exist then it is …

The heat capacity of a sample of LaF3 was determined in the temperature range 5-350°K by aneroid adiabatic calorimetry and the enthalpy from 298.15 to 1477°K by drop calorimetry. The heat capacity at constant pressure C°p(298.15°K), the entropy S°(298.15°K), the enthalpy [H°(298.15°K)-H°(0)] and the Planck function -[G°(298.15°K)-H°(0)]/298.15°K; were found to be (90.29±0.09) J °K-1·mole-1, (106.98±0.11) J °K-1·mole-1, (16717±17) J mole-1, and (50.91±0.05) J °K -1·mole-1. The thermal functions from the present research were extended up to the melting temperature (1766°K) by combination with previously …

Spring Phytoplankton Composition And Distribution In Coastal Waters Between Nova Scotia And The Chesapeake Bay, Larry William Neal Jul 1978

Spring Phytoplankton Composition And Distribution In Coastal Waters Between Nova Scotia And The Chesapeake Bay, Larry William Neal

OES Theses and Dissertations

This investigation was directed toward satisfying a recognized lack of informat on regarding phytoplankton composition and density in shelf waters between Nova Scotia and the Chesapeake Bay. A sedimentation technique was used in determining the phytoplankton composition of 99 samples collected between 2 March and 3 April 1971. Chlorophyll-a samples collected concurrently were analyzed fluorometrically. Simple correlation analyses were utilized in describing distributional patterns of phytoplankton density and chlorophyll-a concentration with respect to water temperature, salinity, density, depth, distance from shore and latitude. Analysis of variance was employed in assessing regional differences in phytoplankton density and chlorophyll-a.

The phytoplankton flora …

Measurements Of Orbit-Lattice Coupling Of Er And Dy Impurities In Ag And Al Hosts, S. A. Dodds, Jeff Sanny Jul 1978

Measurements Of Orbit-Lattice Coupling Of Er And Dy Impurities In Ag And Al Hosts, S. A. Dodds, Jeff Sanny

Physics Faculty Works

The magnetic resonance of dilute Dy and Er impurities has been observed in thin polycrystalline Al and Ag films on two different substrates. The films are deposited at room temperature, and the measurements are made at liquid-helium temperatures. During cooling, the difference in thermal contraction between film and substrate produces an effectively uniaxial strain in the film. This results in an anisotropic g value, which we have used to obtain lower limits on the orbit-lattice coupling coefficient for these systems. We find values for V ( Γ 3g, 2 ) from 600 to 2000 cm − 1 , somewhat …

Theory Of Near-Adiabatic Collisions. Ii. Scattering Coordinate Method, W. R. Thorson, John B. Delos Jul 1978

Theory Of Near-Adiabatic Collisions. Ii. Scattering Coordinate Method, W. R. Thorson, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

A rigorously correct and fully quantum-mechanical theory of slow atomic collisions is presented, which removes the formal defects and spurious nonadiabatic couplings of perturbed-stationary-states theory, and arrives at coupled equations for the heavy-particle motion which are the same as those obtained in the preceding paper by the electron translation factor formulation. Here, however, the theory is formulated in terms of suitably defined scattering coordinates, and electron translation factors do not appear. A unified physical interpretation of both approaches can thereby be made, and smaller terms in the coupled equations, describing corrections of order mμ to electronic binding energies and to …

Theory Of Near-Adiabatic Collisions. I. Electron-Translation-Factor Method, W. R. Thorson, John B. Delos Jul 1978

Theory Of Near-Adiabatic Collisions. I. Electron-Translation-Factor Method, W. R. Thorson, John B. Delos

Arts & Sciences Articles

The theory of near-adiabatic collisions is formulated in a fully quantum-mechanical form, correctly taking into account the role of electron translation factors (ETF's). A general form for the ETF, using switching functions, is given for systems which are electrically either asymmetric or symmetric (with or without mass asymmetry). The main result is that the close-coupled scattering equations obtained in the perturbed-stationary-states theory must be replaced by equations of identical form, but having modified nonadiabatic coupling matrices. In general, the corrections involved are substantial; their nature, and effect on coupling matrices, is discussed, and conditions when they are likely to …

The Design And Construction Of A Nitrogen Laser And Its Use To Pump A Tunable Dye Laser To Measure The Multiphoton Ionization Spectrum Of Molecular Iodine, James Kintigh Jul 1978

The Design And Construction Of A Nitrogen Laser And Its Use To Pump A Tunable Dye Laser To Measure The Multiphoton Ionization Spectrum Of Molecular Iodine, James Kintigh

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A nitrogen laser was constructed for use in multiphoton ionization studies. The short pulse duration and highly intense pulse make the nitrogen laser ideal for pumping a dye laser.

By using the nitrogen laser to pump a tunable dye laser, the multiphoton ionization spectrum for molecular iodine vapor was obtained for the visible spectrum between 23,188 cm-1 (430 nm) and 16, 304 cm-1 (615 nm) using pulsed electronics and a parallel plate ionization chamber. The ionization occurs in this region upon the absorption of four or five photons. The ionization appears to take place via a three-step process. …

Mercury, Copper, And Zinc In Selected Ichthyofauna Of Lower Chesapeake Bay And Hampton Roads, Virginia, W. Bruce Aitenhead

OES Theses and Dissertations

Anchovys, croaker, spat, summer flounder and hogchokers were collected monthly to seasonally from November 1972 to October 1973 at three locations in the southern Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia.

The concentrations of mercury, copper and zinc were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in whole fishes. Metal concentration varied with species and location. Anchovys had the highest mean concentrations of mercury and zinc while hog- chokers had the highest mean copper concentration. Mercury levels exceeding O.5 ppm were observed in species from all three loca- tions, but maximum heavy metal concentrations per species were highest in Craney Island fishes.

Temporal variations …

The Distribution Of Several Metals And Cation Exchange Capacity In Sediment Fractions From An Artificial And Natural Marsh, James River, Virginia, William Nivens Jul 1978

The Distribution Of Several Metals And Cation Exchange Capacity In Sediment Fractions From An Artificial And Natural Marsh, James River, Virginia, William Nivens

OES Theses and Dissertations

In order to examine the mechanisms by which Fe, Mn, Ca, Zn, Cu, Ni and Pb are bound in sediments, a sequential selective extraction procedure was employed on sediment samples collected at an experimental dredge disposal marsh and a neighboring natural marsh located near Windmill Point, James River, Va. The metal concentrations were determined in six phases, interstitial water, exchangeable, easily reducible (oxides of Mn), organic, moderately, reducible (oxides of Fe), and residual fractions. In addition, the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the sediments was determined as well as the actual role of organics and colloidal iron coatings as they …

The Kinetics Of Solvent Reorientation In Hydroxylated Solvents From The Exciting-Wavelength Dependence Of Chromophore Emission Spectra, John Milton, Robert M. Purkey, William C. Galley Jun 1978

The Kinetics Of Solvent Reorientation In Hydroxylated Solvents From The Exciting-Wavelength Dependence Of Chromophore Emission Spectra, John Milton, Robert M. Purkey, William C. Galley

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

The disappearance of the exciting-wavelength dependence of the phosphorescence spectra of polar, aromatic chromophores in supercooled glycol–water mixtures is utilized to monitor the kinetics of solvent reorientation. Reorientation times in the nanosecond to second range are obtained for (3:2 v/v) glycerol–water and (1:1 v/v) ethylene glycol–water at 140–240 °K. The results suggest that the process is one involving a cluster of solvent molecules and in which the chromophore plays a relatively passive role. Steady-state data and direct measurements of phosphorescence shifts as a function of time indicate that the solvent reorientation process is nonexponential in nature. The decay function derived …
