Water Mass Structure And Variability North Of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, As Observed During The Summer Of 1977 For Otec Assessment, Thomas N. Lee, Robert S.C. Munier, Sherman Chiu

RSMAS Technical Reports

Variability of the water mass structure north of St. Croix in the Virgin Islands Basin was observed during a 2.5 month study of corrosion and biofouling on OTEC heat exchanger performance in the summer of 1977. Daily STD profiles and weekly hydrocasts were taken of the upper 1500m from a Tracor Marine barge moored 15 km north of St. Croix in 3600m water depth. The largest temporal fluctuation in water properties occurred ín the Tropical Surface Waters of the upper 100m due primariìy to advection of this spatially inhomogeneous water mass past the moor. Currents in the upper layer were …

Infrared Spectral Detectivity Of Cr‐Doped Gaas, David C. Look Jun 1978

Infrared Spectral Detectivity Of Cr‐Doped Gaas, David C. Look

Physics Faculty Publications

The room‐temperature spectral detectivity of Cr‐doped GaAs has been examined in the impurity excitation region out to 1.7 μ, a range which includes the wavelengths of several important lasers as well as low‐loss optical fibers. The results include values of D∗ greater than 1011 cm Hz1/2/W in the photoconductive mode, and 1010 cm Hz1/2/W in the photomagnetoelectric mode. Small carrier lifetimes, ∼10−8 sec, offer the potential of high‐speed operation; however, the measured response times are much larger, ∼10−3–10−2 sec, because of very high input impedances. Formulas are presented to …

A Study Of The Acid Etch Pretreatment Used With The Nuva-Seal" Dental Process, Judith Ann Komoroski Jun 1978

A Study Of The Acid Etch Pretreatment Used With The Nuva-Seal" Dental Process, Judith Ann Komoroski

Honors Theses

Nuva-Seal, a bisphenol-A-glycidyl-methacrylate polymer, is applied to the occlusal surface of teeth to prevent tooth decay. Before application of the sealant, the enamel surface is etched for one minute by a 50 percent by weight solution of phosphoric acid containing seven percent by weight of zinc oxide. This treatment renders the tooth surface more porous and surface active to insure a strong bond between tooth and sealant. Past studies at Union College have shown that the etching treatment removes much of the enamel from the tooth. In the current work the amount of tooth removed by acid etching was determined …

The Decomposition Of Azibenzil In The Presence Of Oxygen, Nancy C. Westby Jun 1978

The Decomposition Of Azibenzil In The Presence Of Oxygen, Nancy C. Westby

Honors Theses

The ozonolysis of acetylenes is thought to proceed through the formation of ∝-carbonyl carbonyl oxide intermediates. This reaction has been shown to parallel the effect of molecular oxygen on ketocarbenes. Azibenzil, a diazo-ketone, will decompose to a ketocarbene by the action of heat, light or catalyst. The ketocarbene may decompose by two pathways: Wolff rearrangement and non-rearrangement. The Wolff rearrangement route will produce methyldiphenylacetate (upon addition of methanol), benzophenone, tetraphenylglycolide and possibly other high molecular weight polymeric species. The non-rearrangement pathway will presumably produce ∝-carbonyl carbonyl oxides which will decompose under varying circumstances to produce benzyl, benzoic anhydride, benzophenone, tetraphenylglycolide …

The Addition Of Singlet Oxygen To N, N-Diethyl-1-Propynylamine, Kenneth S. Zimmerman Jun 1978

The Addition Of Singlet Oxygen To N, N-Diethyl-1-Propynylamine, Kenneth S. Zimmerman

Honors Theses

The addition of singlet oxygen to N, N-diethyl-1-pro-pynylamine produced 60-75% yields of N, N-diethyl pyruvamide and various carbon dioxide contamination products under several conditions. Products under several conditions. Product formation was independent of solvent and photosensitizer and was shown to proceed via a singlet oxygen addition mechanism with no free radical involvement. The water addition product was also demonstrated to be N, N-diethyl propanamide. A dioxetene intermediate is suggested as the precursor of N, N-diethyl pyruvamide.

The Preparation And Kinetics Of A Sterically Hindered Gold (Iii) Complex, Michael R. Golden Jun 1978

The Preparation And Kinetics Of A Sterically Hindered Gold (Iii) Complex, Michael R. Golden

Honors Theses

The alkyl substituted gold (III) complex [Au(1, 4, 7-Me3dien)Cl] (PF6)2 [where 1, 4, 7-Me3dien respresents (CH3) HNCH2CH2N(CH3)CH2CH2NH(CH3)] has been synthesized. The cation of this compound differs from previously synthesized gold (III) complexes of similar structure since it can form a conjugate base only by loss of hydrogen from a terminal nitrogen. Aqueous solution chemistry studies of this ion reveals that the Cl- is hydrolyzed before loss of a proton from the ligand which is the reverse of the sequence observed with previously studied ions. Monobromo substitution rates are found to be slower than for the complex with no alkyl substitution …

Stress Analysis Of Post And Crown Restorations Of Endodontically Treated Teeth, Ronald C. Hansen Jun 1978

Stress Analysis Of Post And Crown Restorations Of Endodontically Treated Teeth, Ronald C. Hansen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Forty-four similar sized maxillary lateral incisor teeth were randomly divided into four equal groups to test their resistance to fracture. Group 1 teeth were the controls, no treatment was done. Group 2 teeth consisted of endodontically treated teeth, restored with composite resin in the access opening. Group 3 teeth were endodontically treated and restored with a post and flat surface standardized aluminum crown. The teeth in Group 4 were endodontically treated and restored with a post and composite resin core buildup with a cast gold crown. The metal collar of gold incorporated 1.5 mm of tooth structure below the core …

Reactions Of Diazoketones With Neighboring Carbon-To-Carbon Double Bonds, Robert James Perry Jun 1978

Reactions Of Diazoketones With Neighboring Carbon-To-Carbon Double Bonds, Robert James Perry

Honors Theses

It was hoped that the carbon-carbon double bond in an unsaturated diazoketone would act as a nucleophile in an intramolecular attack to give a ring closure. Experimental results indicate that the double bond did participate, but in such a manner so as to give only substituted products, rather than cyclic ones. We suggest a diazonium salt intermediate in the initial formation of these substituted products. Polymerization and oxonium formation after reactopm with a Lewis acid solvent account for the polymers formed and some of the substituted products.

Removal Of Chloroform From Drinking Water, John S. Zogorski, George D. Allgeier, Robert Lee Mullins Jr. Jun 1978

Removal Of Chloroform From Drinking Water, John S. Zogorski, George D. Allgeier, Robert Lee Mullins Jr.

KWRRI Research Reports

The overall objective of this investigation was to evaluate via laboratory experiments the technical feasibility of reducing trihalomethane levels in drinking water. Special attention was directed at the removal of chloroform since: (a) it is the only trihalomethane which has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal tests; and (b) this compound generally comprises the largest fraction of the total trihalomethane content of chlorinated waters in Kentucky. Trihalomethanes are present in municipal drinking waters due to the reaction of free chlorine with naturally occurring compounds, collectively called "precursors".

A variety of treatment processes and potential modifications (or additions) to existing …

Organized Resistance To An Imposed Environmental Change: A Resevoir In Eastern Kentucky, William F. Schweri Ii, John Van Willigen

KWRRI Research Reports

This is a case study of a group organized to resist the construction of an Army Corps of Engineers reservoir project located in Eastern Kentucky, More specifically the account describes how a group of landowners organized themselves and enacted an increasingly complex strategy of resistance. Within this framework perceived costs, leadership and authority and group organization are considered.

The primary method employed in this research was that of repeated interviews with members of the resistance organization who were identified as key informants. These interviews were carried out on both structured and unstructured bases.

The formal analysis of the voluntary association …

Calculated Yields And Slowing-Down Spectra For Electrons In Liquid Water: Implications For Electron And Photon Rbe, R. N. Hamm, H. A. Wright, Robert Katz, J. E. Turner, R. H. Ritchie Jun 1978

Calculated Yields And Slowing-Down Spectra For Electrons In Liquid Water: Implications For Electron And Photon Rbe, R. N. Hamm, H. A. Wright, Robert Katz, J. E. Turner, R. H. Ritchie

Robert Katz Publications

Detailed Monte Carlo calculations have been carried out of slowing-down spectra and yields for a number of end-points for electrons in liquid water. These investigations were made to study differences in physical effects of different low-LET radiations and implications for RBE. Initial electron energies from 1 keV to 1 MeV were used, and all secondary electrons were followed in the computations until their energies fell below 10 eV. Though there are substantial differences in the slowing-down spectra at energies near and above the K-shell ionization potential of oxygen, the energy spectrum of electrons at lower energies is found to be …

Existence Of The Dielectric Constant In Fluids Of Nonlinear Rigid Polar Molecules, John D. Ramshaw Jun 1978

Existence Of The Dielectric Constant In Fluids Of Nonlinear Rigid Polar Molecules, John D. Ramshaw

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The existence of the dielectric constant epsilon is investigated for fluids composed of nonlinear rigid polar molecules. The investigation is performed using the functional-derivative approach previously employed to establish sufficient conditions for the existence of epsilon in fluids of linear (axially symmetric) molecules. It is shown that these same conditions are sufficient for nonlinear molecules of arbitrary symmetry. An expression for epsilon in terms of the direct correlation function emerges automatically from the development. This expression, which involves the inversion of a 3 x 3 matrix, is a slight generalization of one obtained earlier by Hoye and Stell using an …

Dredge Spoil Disposal With Particular Reference To Management Practices In Southern New England, Lynne A. Melville Jun 1978

Dredge Spoil Disposal With Particular Reference To Management Practices In Southern New England, Lynne A. Melville

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

One-half million acres of U.S. coastal wetlands have been destroyed by dredging and filling operations since 1956. They are being destroyed at the rate of 0.5-1.0% each year. In one ten year period, Rhode Island lost 5% of its 2000 acres of wetlands to urban development, and Connecticut lost 12% of its marsh lands. Less than 1500 acres of marsh remain in Connecticut. During the course of this research project, I examined one aspect of wetland destruction - the dredging and disposal of spoil materials onto wetlands and into the coastal waters of Southern New England. What follows is a …

Magnetic Properties Of Linear Chain Systems: Metamagnetism Of Single Crystal Co(Pyridine)2Cl2, S. Foner, Richard B. Frankel, W. M. Reiff, H. Wong, Gary J. Long

Physics

The metamagnetic behavior of the low temperature properties of single crystal Co(pyridine)2Cl2 is discussed. At 1.25 K oriented single crystals exhibit a two‐step metamagnetic transition at applied fields ∼0.8 and 1.6 kG along the b‐axis, a single transition at ∼0.7 kG for applied fields along the a axis, and a single transition at ∼4.2 kG for an applied field along the c axis. Just above the transition fields a moment of 2μB/Co atom is measured for B0 parallel to the a axis or b axis, and 0.4μB/Co atom is …

On Existence Of Extremal Solutions Of Differential Equations In Banach Spaces, V. Lakshmikantham, K. Deimling Jun 1978

On Existence Of Extremal Solutions Of Differential Equations In Banach Spaces, V. Lakshmikantham, K. Deimling

Mathematics Technical Papers

Let X be a real Banach space, [see pdf for notation] a cone, [see pdf for notation] and [see pdf for notation] continuous. We look for conditions on X, K and f such that the IVP (1) [see pdf for notation] has a maximal solution [see pdf for notation] and a minimal solution u with respect to the partial ordering induced by K. Contrary to known results, [5,6], we shall not assume that K has interior points, since the standard cones of many infinite dimensional spaces have empty interior. The second essential new feature is that f is supposed to …

Stochastic Differential Inequalities Of Ito Type, V. Lakshmikantham, G. S. Ladde Jun 1978

Stochastic Differential Inequalities Of Ito Type, V. Lakshmikantham, G. S. Ladde

Mathematics Technical Papers

It is well known [3] that the method of differential inequalities plays an important role in the qualitative theory of differential equations. It is therefore natural to expect that a similar theory would be equally important in the study of Stochastic differential systems of Ito type. As will be seen that this investigation is not straightforward extension of the deterministic situation and needs special techniques to be utilized. In this paper, we develop the theory of stochastic differential inequality of Ito type, consider the nonnegativity of solutions, prove existence of extremal solutions and derive a comparison result.

A Primary Ecological Survey Of Dardanelle Reservoir Prior To Nuclear Facility Effluent Discharge, Clarence B. Sinclair, Robert L. Watson Jun 1978

A Primary Ecological Survey Of Dardanelle Reservoir Prior To Nuclear Facility Effluent Discharge, Clarence B. Sinclair, Robert L. Watson

Technical Reports

A preliminary ecological survey of Dardanelle Reservoir during the construction phase of Arkansas Power and Light Company's nuclear generating facility was conducted from January 1970 through June 1974. The reservoir is characterized by relatively shallow depths and a high flow-thru rate. A number of features were associated with these characteristics. The reservoir carried a great deal of suspended material and exhibited high turbidities throughout most of the year. Typical thermal stratification and oxygen depletion were only rarely observed. Many of the physico-chemical parameters exhibited relatively high values in comparison to other Arkansas lakes and reservoirs, but due to absence of …

Co2 Laser Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Richard S. Herrick Jun 1978

Co2 Laser Induced Decomposition Of Freon 113, Richard S. Herrick

Honors Theses

Irradiations were made on CCl2FCClF2, Freon 113, to see if the resulting decomposition was photochemical in nature. The irradiation source was Molectron 250, continuous wave, infrared laser operating in the single line mode. The wavelength of irradiation was varied over the range 9.473 µ to 9.734 µ. The pressure except one (in which the cell window broke). Relative rates of reaction were calculated for a constant power absorbed by the sample of 7.8 ± 4W. These relative rates were plotted against the irradiation wavelength. This was superimposed on a plot of the IR band for Freon 113 which was irradiated …

Structural Analysis Of The Great Smoky Thrust Sheet Along The Little Tennessee River, John E. Livingston Jun 1978

Structural Analysis Of The Great Smoky Thrust Sheet Along The Little Tennessee River, John E. Livingston

Masters Theses

This study involves a structural analysis of a portion of the Great Smoky thrust sheet in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Four groups of folds and related structures have been identified in this area. the earliest folds include second-order mesoscopic F1 folds with a slaty cleavage axial plane foliation (S1). These folds occur on the limbs of first-order macroscopic F1 folds which are discordant to the Great Smoky fault. In several places, the F1 folds are overprinted by mesoscopic F2 folds which are characterized by crenulation cleavage axial plane foliation (S2). F2 folds include tight to isoclinal folds with …
