Synthesis Of Crown Ethers & Stereochemistry Of 1, 4-Ditertiarybutyl-1, 4-Dihydronaphthalene, Abdolreza-H-Hossein Nejad Jun 1978

Synthesis Of Crown Ethers & Stereochemistry Of 1, 4-Ditertiarybutyl-1, 4-Dihydronaphthalene, Abdolreza-H-Hossein Nejad

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A. Cyclization of ethylene oxide in the presence of transition metal salts was studied. Several reactions with different catalysts were tried and some of these reactions produced compounds which show only one sharp singlet in their NMR spectra. These products were also soluble in benzene. The solubility of potassium permanganate in this mixture suggests the presence of cyclic polyethers. In spite of the above observations, all attempts to liberate cyclic ethers from their metal complexes were unsuccessful.

B. In the second project, the stereochemistry of 1,4-ditertiarybuty1- 1,4-dihydronaphthalene was elucidated using 1H and 13C NMR. For this purpose, other …

Emp Analysis Of An Fm Communications Radio With A Long Wire Antenna, George H. Baker Iii, Werner J. Stark May 1978

Emp Analysis Of An Fm Communications Radio With A Long Wire Antenna, George H. Baker Iii, Werner J. Stark

George H Baker

A Norton equivalent circuit is developed for a long-wire antenna used with a VHF man-pack FM radio exposed to an incident electromagnetic pulse (EMP). The required short-circuit current and antenna impedance are computed by use of a transmission-line model for the antenna, and the computations are compared with measurements of the short-circuit current and antenna impedance. The comparison shows that the transmission-line model for the antenna is adequate for performing a vulnerability analysis of the radio. A network model is developed for a portion of the radio and is used as the load in the Norton equivalent circuit. Load currents …

Crown Ethers : Applications In Inorganic Synthesis, Robert L. Sundberg May 1978

Crown Ethers : Applications In Inorganic Synthesis, Robert L. Sundberg

Senior Scholar Papers

The ability of macroheterocyclic compounds to complex with ionic species has led to the synthesis and investigation of many multidentate macroheterocyclic species. The most stable complexes are formed between macrocyclic polyetheral ligands (crown ethers) with alkali or alkaline earth metal iona. There is an excellent correlation of the stability of these complexes with the size of the cation and the site of the cavity in the macrocyclic ligand. Additional factors, such as the basicity of the ligand and the solvating ability of the solvent, also play important roles in the stabilization of the complex. The stability of such complexes has …

The Natural Growth Records Of Reef-Building Corals, Richard E. Dodge May 1978

The Natural Growth Records Of Reef-Building Corals, Richard E. Dodge

Oceanography Faculty Theses and Dissertations

Through analysis of hermatypic coral incremental growth features, it is possible to determine the response of recent corals to their environments. In this way I have attempted to obtain a tool not only to gain knowledge of recent growth processes but also for reconstructing aspects of past environmental conditions associated with fossil coral growth. The procedure has been first to determine time relationships and characteristics of coral skeletal density bands and to next use banding for investigations into areal growth rate patterns, coral population age distributions, and coral-climate interactions.

Density band couplets, visible X-radiographically in medial sections of coral skeletons, …

The Investigation Of 3,4- Dipheny1-3- Cyclobutene-1, 2-Dione As A Precursor To A Bis-Ketene, John Dana Myers

Master's Theses

The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of 3, 4-diphenyl-3-cyclobutene-1, 2-dione as a synthetic precursor to bis-ketenes and ultimately examine the chemical behavior of this relatively unknown system. We intend to investigate some of the chemical behavior of bis-phenylketene produced by the well-documented photochemical ring opening of 3, 4-diphenyl-3-cyclobutene-1, 2-dione. Specifically the use of alkenes a chemical traps for the bis-ketene will be investigated. These reactions will be compared and contrasted to the behavior of the ketenes and vinyl ketenes.

Coordination Chemistry Of Bidentate Difluorophosphines, Darrell Lynn Gallup May 1978

Coordination Chemistry Of Bidentate Difluorophosphines, Darrell Lynn Gallup

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The reactions of 1, 2–bis(difluorophosphino)cyclohexane, PF2C6H10PF2, with hexacarbonyls of Cr(O), Mo(O), and W(O) have been extensively investigated. The hexacarbonyls react, either under photolytic or thermolytic conditions, to produce carbon monoxide and oily mixtures of products of the general formulations, [M(CO)4(PF2C6H10PF2C)]x, where x varies apparently from 1 – 4. The higher values of x, corresponding to species involving bridging ligands, are more common to the photolysis rather than the thermolysis reactions. Photolysis reactions of Mo(Co)6 with increasing amounts of the …

Topological Properties Of C(X, Y), Chris Alan Schwendiman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this paper is to examine the important topological properties of the function spaces BC(X,Y) and C(X,Y). Emphasis is given to the relationship between the metrizability of X and the separability of these function spaces. The paper is divided into three major parts: the preliminary definitions and theorems; the relationship between the topological properties of X and BC (X ,Y), for compact X; and the extension of the results of Part II for X not compact and for the case when we have C(X, Y).

Conflict In Outdoor Recreation, Gerald R. Jacob May 1978

Conflict In Outdoor Recreation, Gerald R. Jacob

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The causes of conflict among users of outdoor recreation resources have received little attention from recreation researchers. Knowledge of factors responsible for conflict might assist recreation planners' attempts to reduce future instances of conflict and help management focus its conflict resolution efforts. A theory of conflict is offered as the first step in systematically procuring such knowledge. A definition and characteristics of outdoor recreation conflicts are presented; four comprehensive causes of user conflicts are proposed. Ten propositions are used to link these factors to conflict and suggest future research hypotheses. The social psychological dynamics of conflict, as described here, have …

A Discriminant Function Model Of Gray-Headed Junco Habitat, Andrew R. Grainger May 1978

A Discriminant Function Model Of Gray-Headed Junco Habitat, Andrew R. Grainger

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This paper presents a description of gray-headed junco habitat in the form of a model based on discriminant function analysis. Junco nests were found by searching randomly located grids on a 7.8 km2 study area in central Utah. Vegetation data was gathered on 500 m2 circular plots surrounding nests and contrasted with similar data from searched grids where nests were not found. The model explains 28 percent of the between-groups variance and correctly classifies 68 percent of the plots.

Plant cover types are good predictors of areas where gray-headed juncos nest, while plant community type descriptions do not …

An Input-Output Analysis Of The Soviet Fleet In Icnaf Areas 5 And 6, 1961-1973, F. Robert Bauer

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

One of the goals of the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976 was the rebuilding of the American fishing industry. However, the Act does not give the U.S.fisherman exclusive rights to the fishery resource. The American fisherman will still be competing with the foreign fleets. Section 204 (b) (1) of the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976. states: Each foreign nation with which the United States has entered into a governing international agreement shall submit an application to the Secretary of State each year for a permit for each of its fishing vessels to engage in fishing described …

Present Trends In The Development Of Marine Fisheries By Coastal States Of The East Central Atlantic, Ethman T. A. Golley-Morgan May 1978

Present Trends In The Development Of Marine Fisheries By Coastal States Of The East Central Atlantic, Ethman T. A. Golley-Morgan

Marine Affairs Theses and Major Papers

In order to create an incentive for a rapid development of the rural-based artisanal fisheries of coastal states, that can actively compete with large scale industrial fisheries of non-coastal states as well as coastal states of the region, some states are now moving towards an integrated approach in their development efforts. Such integrated projects will take into consideration rural development, provision of infrastructural facilities for fish handling and processing, vessel servicing, repairs and boat building. Socio-economic factors such as organization of fishermen's cooperatives, financing and marketing institutions are also vital inputs.

Physiological Response To Hooking Stress In Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides), A. Wayne Gustaveson May 1978

Physiological Response To Hooking Stress In Largemouth Bass (Micropterus Salmoides), A. Wayne Gustaveson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Recent concern about large initial and delayed mortalities resulting from tournament angling for largemouth bass has indicated that it would be desirable to further evaluate the fate of fish that are released after being captured by angling. This study was designed to evaluate sublethal physiological disruptions caused by hooking stress after largemouth bass were played under standardized conditions (0-5 minutes) and to estimate the time needed for recovery of the homeostatic mechanisms (to 72 hours). Blood lactate was used as a measure of metabolic fatigue; plasma osmolality and chloride measurements were used to evaluate osmoregulatory disturbances and gill ion-exchange; and …

On The Relative Behavior Of Estimators Of Reliability/Survivability, Danny D. Dyer, Onas L. Hensley, Jerome P. Keating May 1978

On The Relative Behavior Of Estimators Of Reliability/Survivability, Danny D. Dyer, Onas L. Hensley, Jerome P. Keating

Mathematics Technical Papers

Based on a decomposition of mean absolute error, a twofold technique is introduced whereby a pairwise comparison of point estimators of reliability/survivability can be made. Given two such estimators, the method examines (a) the "odds" in favor of one of the estimators being closer to the true value than is the other and (b) each estimator's average closeness to the true value not only when it is closer than is the other but also when it is not. Joint consideration of these concepts is shown to form a basis for determining which of the two estimators is preferred in a …

Separation And Monotonicity Results For The Roots Of The Moment Problem, Jerome Eisenfeld, James Hallmark

Mathematics Technical Papers

Consider the system identification problem [see pdf for notation] [see pdf for notation] where u(t) and y(t) are given discretely on the interval [see pdf for notation] and we wish to determine information about the unknown constant matrices A, B, and C. Many techniques are available for approaching this problem. Several of these methods lead to what is known as the moment problem, [1]-[6]. This paper pertains to the moment problem which will now be introduced.
