Sedimentation And Stratigraphy Of The Rome Formation In East Tennessee, Nabil Fahmi Samman Aug 1975

Sedimentation And Stratigraphy Of The Rome Formation In East Tennessee, Nabil Fahmi Samman

Doctoral Dissertations

The late Early Cambrian Rome Formation is the oldest formation that is exposed widely across the Valley and Ridge Province. It is brought to the surface by major thrust faults, and in many cases is topographically the highest exposed formation; consequently, the bottom and the top of the Rome are usually missing. Nowhere is a complete section of the Rome formation exposed except in northeast Tennessee.

The Rome is a heterogeneous formation of red, maroon, brown and green colored sandstone, siltstone and shale and local beds of gray limestone and dolomite, all of which vary greatly in proportion and distribution …

Sedimentation And Stratigraphy Of The Mount Rogers Formation, Virginia, Kenneth Morris Blondeau Aug 1975

Sedimentation And Stratigraphy Of The Mount Rogers Formation, Virginia, Kenneth Morris Blondeau

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The Mount Rogers Formation of southwestern Virginia is a thick, upper Precambrian sequence of interbedded conglomeratic mudstones, rhythmically layered argillites, arkosic sandstones and conglomerates, polymict conglomerates, and associated rhyolitic and latitic flows and pyroclastics. The conglomeratic mudstone consists of unsorted, angular to sub rounded grains, ranging in size from silt up to boulders one meter in diameter, enclosed within a fine-grained hematitic matrix or cement. The rhythmically layered argillite is made up of thin, alternating couplets of light, very fine-grained sandstone or siltstone grading upward into dark red argillite. Many of the couplets contain "outsized" exotic clasts which penetrate and …

The Effect Of Nitroalkanes On The Electrolytic Oxidation Of Tertiary Butyl Amine And Tertiary Amyl Amine, Karl Lloyd Bergen Aug 1975

The Effect Of Nitroalkanes On The Electrolytic Oxidation Of Tertiary Butyl Amine And Tertiary Amyl Amine, Karl Lloyd Bergen

Theses and Dissertations

The electrolyses of tert.-butyl and tert.-amyl amines were run with a voltage of approximately 3v., as measured across the cell, with and without the presence of 1-2% nitro-tert.-alkane. A graphite anode was used; the supporting electrolyte was NaClO4; the solvent was the reacting amine(s) with 10-20% water to solubilize the NaClO4. The products were azo compounds, azoxy compounds, 1,3-disubstituted ureas and traces of nitroso compounds. In the case of tert.-butyl amine di-tert.-butyl carbodiimide was also shown to be a product. The presence of nitro compounds increased the yields of azoxy and nitroso compounds and decreased the yields of azo compounds. …

Synthesis And Stereochemistry Of 2,6,10-Triazatricyclo [5.2.1.0⁴ ¹⁰] Decane Derivatives, Susan Elaine Foulger Aug 1975

Synthesis And Stereochemistry Of 2,6,10-Triazatricyclo [5.2.1.0⁴ ¹⁰] Decane Derivatives, Susan Elaine Foulger

Theses and Dissertations

The synthesis and stereochemical aspects of derivatives of the new ring system 2,6,10-triazatricyclo [5.2.1.04,10] decane are discussed. Sythesis of 2-nitro-2-methyl-1,3-disubstitutedaminopropanes, followed by reduction of these compounds to 2-amino-2-methyl-1,3-disubstituted aminopropanes afforded the necessary starting materials for a cyclization reaction similar to that resulting in already known 2,6-dioxa-10-azatricyclo [5.2.1.04,10] decanes. Reaction of the triamines with 2,5-hexanedione resulted in 2,6-disubstituted-1,4,7-trimethyl-2,6,10-triazatricyclo [5.2.1.04,10] decanes. The stereochemical aspects of this ring system are interesting from the standpoint of nitrogen inversion barriers on nitrogens 2 and 6. Existence of a high inversion barrier for these nitrogens in shown by isolation of different diastereomers of the tricycle. Methods …

Teaching-The Purpose Of Repeatable Testing: Response To Comment Of J. D. Edmonds, D.E. Golden, Robert Fuller, D.D. Jensen

Robert G. Fuller Publications

It is not clear that the comment "Grading and Regrading"' has very much to do with our article.' The comment seems rather to be a nostalgic statement recalling the good old days when with glee we cracked the whip and the students either shaped up or shipped out.

Our purpose in doing repeatable testing was not to become a "do your own thing" force, to raise everyone's grades, to "achieve well defined educational objectives" like teaching the solution to the inclined plane problem, to do away with certification, and most definitely our purpose was not to replace teachers with computer-programmed …

Obesity And Vegetarianism In Seventh-Day Adventist Women, Charlotte Ann Van Camp Darnell Aug 1975

Obesity And Vegetarianism In Seventh-Day Adventist Women, Charlotte Ann Van Camp Darnell

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This thesis describes a comparative study of 82 vegetarian and 21 non-vegetarian Seventh-day Adventist females ages 25 to 65 to discover if there is a possible correlation between diet and weight. The subjects were chosen by random sampling in the specified target population and were personally interviewed by the use of a questionnaire.

The general linear hypothesis analysis shewed that present age and relative weight at age 25 were significant in terms of present relative weight; however, physical activity and socioeconomic stratum were not significant. Diet, defined as vegetarian or non-vegetarian, was only marginally significant.

Conclusions of this study are …

Sensitivity Of A Gas Filter Correlation Instrument To Variations In Atmospheric Profile And Earth Surface Temperatures, Joseph C. Casas Aug 1975

Sensitivity Of A Gas Filter Correlation Instrument To Variations In Atmospheric Profile And Earth Surface Temperatures, Joseph C. Casas

Physics Theses & Dissertations

The Gas Filter Correlation Radiometer Analyzer (GFCR), in application to the remote sensing of trace gases in the atmosphere, is potentially limited by the sensitivity of the measured upwelling thermal radiation to surface temperature and atmospheric temperature conditions. This study has been carried out to examine the principles of operation of the GFCR Analyzer and to obtain quantitative estimates of the errors produced in GFCR Analyzer measurements of CO (4.6μ), S02 (8.6μ), NH3 (11.0μ), and CH4 (8.1μ) resulting from uncertainties in the atmospheric temperature profile and ground temperature.

A simple mathematical prototype GFCR Analyzer was assumed. A line-by-line atmospheric radiative …

A Spectrophotometric Equilibrium Study Of Nickel(Ii)-3, 4', 4", 4'"-Tetrasulfophthalocyanine, Stephen Lowery

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

There have been several studies made on the effects of various central metal ions on the aggregation of tetrasulfonated Phthalocyanine dye complexes in aqueous solution, but there have been no studies made on the aggregation of the nickel(II)-4, 4', 4", 4'"-tetrasulfoohthalocyanine (NiII-TSPC) complex. Therefore, a study of the effects of nickel(II) on the aggregation of its aqueous tetrasulfonated Phthalocyanine dye complex was Proposed so that a comparison might be made with nrevious studies of central metal ion effects. It was found, however, that NiII-TSPC gives a much higher degree of aggregation in water than the metal …

Electronic Transitions Of Metal Complexes With Triphenylphosphine As A Ligand, Thomas Zimmer Aug 1975

Electronic Transitions Of Metal Complexes With Triphenylphosphine As A Ligand, Thomas Zimmer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The spectra of transition metal complexes with triphenylphosphine have been measured near 260 nm and the results interpreted in terms of perturbation of the it electron system of the phenyl ring. All complexes studied show sou degree of delocalization of the d-orbital electrons of the metal into the phenyl ring. However, for first row transition metals, the primary affect was found to be polarization of the phenyl ring due to the presence of the metal ion. For second and third row transition metal ions, the primary effect was found to be metal-ligand back-bonding. However, the effect of polarization of the …

Composition And Structure Of A Stress Relieving Removable Epoxy Resin, Cecelia Victoria Krapcha Carter Jul 1975

Composition And Structure Of A Stress Relieving Removable Epoxy Resin, Cecelia Victoria Krapcha Carter

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

The aqueous modification of polyol modified anhydride cured diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A exhibits properties of a brittle solid when subjected to an impulse stress, and properties of a viscous fluid when subjected to a steady state stress. This behavior is markedly different from the nonaqueous system. Early attempts to understand the nature of the change in properties and the physical mechanism involved have not been completely successful. These attempts have typically taken a physical chemistry approach and have not fully investigated the organic nature of the polymer. In order to fully understand a polymer system an important step should …

The Determination Of Double Mode Variable Star Periods, Arne A. Henden Jul 1975

The Determination Of Double Mode Variable Star Periods, Arne A. Henden

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

ABSTRACT

The problem of determining the periods of objects oscillating in one or more modes is discussed. Although the methods described are applicable to many different kinds of objects and observations, the discussion has been limited to double mode Cepheid stars.

Two methods of solution are followed in detail. An autocorrelation technique based on the scatter of points in an amplitude-phase plane is used for most cases. A means of calculating smoothed mean curves is discussed. A Fourier transform method is presented for closely spaced data points, with prewhitening included for accurate secondary period and amplitude determinations.

Three test problems …

Theoretical Study Of Impurity-Induced First-Order Raman Spectra For The Alkali Halides, Arnold Karo, John R. Hardy Jul 1975

Theoretical Study Of Impurity-Induced First-Order Raman Spectra For The Alkali Halides, Arnold Karo, John R. Hardy

John R. Hardy Papers

A deformation-dipole model with first- and second-neighbor central short-range forces is used as a basis for calculating all symmetry-adapted combinations of eigenvectors (SACEV) necessary for the study of defect vibrations in alkali-halide crystals. As an example of the full set of spectral weight functions, which are tabulated separately, sample results are given for the predicted defect-activated E, Raman spectra for KC1, KI, RbCl, and KBr, assuming no force-constant changes and that the defect is located at a positive-ion site. The results show qualitative agreement with the earlier findings of Harley, Page, and Walker, even though the deformation-dipole model is not …
