Geochemistry Of The Cenozoic Volcanic Rocks Of Ross Island And Vicinity, Antarctica, S. S. Goldich, S. B. Treves, N. H. Suhr, J. S. Stuckless

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The Cenozoic volcanic rocks of Ross Island and vicinity, Antarctica, are surface flows, tuffs, breccias, and small intrusives. The prominent rock is basanitoid. Alkali-basalt magma reached the surface over an appreciable length of time and was differentiated to produce a rock series: basanitoid → trachybasalt → phonolite. The alkalic, silica-undersaturated rocks are part of a larger petrologic province composed of volcanic centers in a belt nearly 2,000 km long roughly parallel to the Transantarctic Mountains. Two trends of magmatic differentiation are apparent. At depth the fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, and opaque oxide minerals, all of which are abundant as …

Energy And Angular Distribution Of Electrons Ejected From Helium By Fast Protons And Electrons: Theory And Experiment, Steven Trent Manson, Larry H. Toburen, Don H. Madison, Nikolaus Stolterfoht

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

A comprehensive study of the angular and energy distributions of electrons ejected in collisions of fast electrons and protons with He is presented. New experimental results for 300-keV, 1-MeV, and 5-MeV proton impact are reported along with theoretical results for 2-keV electron impact and 100-keV, 300-keV, 1-MeV, and 5-MeV proton impact. The theoretical results, based upon Born approximation with Hartree-Slater initial discrete and final continuum wave functions, show excellent agreement with experimental electron-impact results. Serious discrepancies are found between theory and experiment in the angular distribution of ejected electrons for forward angles for 100- and 300-keV proton impact; the discrepancies …

The Law Of Water Allocation In Kentucky, Richard C. Ausness, Bill H. Flynn Jul 1975

The Law Of Water Allocation In Kentucky, Richard C. Ausness, Bill H. Flynn

KWRRI Research Reports

This study discusses navigability concepts, consumptive rights to surface and ground waters, the disposal of diffused surface waters and the administration of Kentucky's statutory water allocation system.

Federal regulatory powers are based on navigability as is state ownership of submerged lands. Kentucky uses the ebb-and-flow test of navigability to determine title to submerged lands but uses a navigability-in-fact test to determine the scope of state regulatory authority. Consumptive uses of water in Kentucky are governed by the riparian landowner to use as much water as he needs as long as his use does not interfere with the legitimate uses of …

Genetic Studies Of Cave And Spring Populations Of The Freshwater Amphipod Crustacean Gammarus Minus Say, Steven Wolf Hetrick

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The amphipod Gammaru. minus has three morphotypes in its Appalachian range : (1) a spring form with well-developed eyes, (2) an intermediate cave form with slightly reduced eyes, and (3) an extreme cave form with greatly reduced eyes. This study compares the genetic structure of populations in two karst areas and analyzes the genetics of populations of the three morphotypes.

Genetic data were collected from populations in the Ward's Cove, Virginia and Greenbrier Valley, West Virginia karst areas using zone electrophoresis zymograms. One hundred percent of the Ward's Cove populations are polymorphic at both MDH-1 and PEP 1 loci …

The Analysis Of Volatile Organic Compounds In The Southern Chesapeake Bay, Virginia By Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, James D. Haluska Jul 1975

The Analysis Of Volatile Organic Compounds In The Southern Chesapeake Bay, Virginia By Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry, James D. Haluska

OES Theses and Dissertations

Sea-water samples from the Norfolk, Virginia area were analyzed for trace volatile organic compounds by helium sparging. Contents of the trap were injected into a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer. Analysis of the trap contents indicated the presence of aliphatic and olef1nic hydrocarbons containing up to six carbon atoms and eight halogenated compounds of up to two carbon atoms in length. The halogenated compounds which were identified were dichlorofluoromethane, trichlorotrifluoroethane, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, trichloroethane (2 isomers) bromodichloromethane, and chlorotrifluoroethylene. The

relative concentrations of volatile organic compounds generally tended to increase in samples collected from water prone to urban environmental pressures. All eight …

Microbenthic Algal Production Of An Intertidal Sandflat In Little Creek Harbor, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Clayton Barry Shedrow Jul 1975

Microbenthic Algal Production Of An Intertidal Sandflat In Little Creek Harbor, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Clayton Barry Shedrow

OES Theses and Dissertations

Estimated annual net microbenthic algal production of an intertidal sandflat on Little Creek Inlet, Virginia Beach, Virginia, was 105 g C/m2. Seasonally, primary production was greatest during the summer and fall periods (38 and 49 g C/m2, respectively). Productivity was found to vary directly with water temperature and standing crop of benthic diatoms, and inversely with incident solar radiation and standing crops of sedimentary chlorophyll 'a' and 'c'. Orthophosphate and nitrate-N appeared to be limiting factors, nitrate-N more so than orthophosphate. Mean annual net photosynthetic efficiency (based upon total light) for the microphytobenthic community was 0.09%. …

Urbanization And Environmental Change In Lynnhaven Estuary, Don W. Oswalt Jul 1975

Urbanization And Environmental Change In Lynnhaven Estuary, Don W. Oswalt

OES Theses and Dissertations

The very minimal amounts of available urbanization data demonstrate that the number of residential dwellings in the Lynnhaven drainage basin increased sharply in the late 1950’s and early 1960's, and that the 1970 basin population density value of 1981 people per square mile is larger than all the burrough density values, except for the Virginia Beach burrough. Due to a lack of data, only qualitative changes in Lynnhaven’s marine environment can be noted. There is a strong suggestion of an increase in amounts of urban storm water run-off into Lynnhaven since 1937. A considerable amount of siltation has occurred since …

The Synthesis Of New Maleimide Addition Polymer Precursors, Richard B. Brown Jul 1975

The Synthesis Of New Maleimide Addition Polymer Precursors, Richard B. Brown

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

1H-2,3-dimethylpyrrolo(1,2-a) benzimidazol-l-one (27) and 1H,9H- 2,3,7,8-tetramethyl-bispyrrolo(1,2-a:6,7-a')benzodiimidazo1-1,9-dione (32) have been synthesized from dimethylmaleic anhydride and o-phenylenediamine and 1,2,4,5-tetraaminobenzene, respectively. The presence of reactive olefinic double bonds in the synthesized compounds was of interest as a site for possible addition polymerization.

The synthetic route involved, in both cases, a simple nucleophilic substitution reaction between the diamine(or tetraamine) and the anhydride to form an intermediate amide-acid-amine which rapidly cyclized to the imide amine. The final ring closure required more rigorous conditions and occurred at melt reaction temperatures.

On The Convergence Of Successive Approximations For Quasi-Nonexpansive Mappings Through Abstract Cones, B. B. Williams, J. C. Bolen

Mathematics Technical Papers

In a recent paper, Petryshyn and Williamson [4] investigated the convergence of successive approximations of quasi- nonexpansive mappings in a Banach space. This paper contains an outline, in chronological order, of the main results concerning the convergence of iteration method and consequently includes a number of references. Perov and Kibenko [3] employed generalized Banach spaces to extend contraction mapping principal and to show the flexibility of such an approach in applications. See also Bernfeld and Lakshmikantham [1]. More recently, Eisenfeld and Lakshmikantham [5,6] proved some fixed point theorems in abstract cones which extend and generalize many known results. In this …

Path Integrals With Arbitrary Generators And The Eigenfunction Problem, William B. Campbell, Paul Finkler, C. E. Jones, M. N. Misheloff

Paul Finkler Papers

We generalize the path integral formalism of quantum mechanics to include the use of arbitrary infinitesimal generators, thus providing explicit expressions for solutions of a wide class of differential equations. In particular, we develop a method of calculating the eigenfunctions of a large class of operators.

The Dynamics Of An Hcp Crystal With A Substitutional Defect, Pramod C. Karulkar Jun 1975

The Dynamics Of An Hcp Crystal With A Substitutional Defect, Pramod C. Karulkar

Dissertations and Theses

We examine the problem of the dynamics of a hexagonal close packed crystal with a single substitutional impurity. The effects of the mass and the force constant changes due to the introduction of the impurity atom are taken into account assuming nearest neighbor interactions under the harmonic approximation. Using Green’s function and group theoretical methods, the equations of motion for the perturbed normal modes are obtained in an exact form. The calculations are performed by allowing for very general force constant changes which can have noncentral as well as central contributions. Further, by assuming central forces, we simplify the equations …

Synthesis Of 2,4-Dichloro-6-Methylborazine And 2-Chloro-4,6-Dimethylborazine, Deborah Ann Scribner Jun 1975

Synthesis Of 2,4-Dichloro-6-Methylborazine And 2-Chloro-4,6-Dimethylborazine, Deborah Ann Scribner

Honors Theses

In the attempted preparation of 2, 4, 6-trimethylborazine, two unknown products were isolated. It was suspected that these could be 2-chloro-4, 6-dimethylborazine and 2, 4-dichloro-6-methylborazine. Due to the difficulty of separation of the two products, they were not positively identified. These two compounds were then chosen for synthesis and characterization since they would be useful starting materials for the preparation of unsymmetrically substituted borazines and since there is little data on unsymmetrical borazine derivatives. It was later decided that the 2, 4-dichloro-6-methyl-borazine would be synthesized first since it would be earlier to control the mole ratio of reactants to favor …

Calculation Of Pseudocontact Shifts For Co( Ch30h)5x2+ Complexes, Jerry Goodisman Jun 1975

Calculation Of Pseudocontact Shifts For Co( Ch30h)5x2+ Complexes, Jerry Goodisman

Chemistry - All Scholarship

In this article, we calculate pseudocontact shifts for tetragonal high-spin Co(I1) complexes using a crystal field model. Calculated results for the dipolar field strength and its variation with temperature are compared with values derived from experimental measurements on complexes of the form Co(CH30H)5X2+. The calculation involves evaluation of the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility, and proceeds by the following steps: (a) from the crystal field parameters Dq, Ds, Dt, and B the three orbital wave functions of lowest energy are found. (b) The effect of spin-orbit coupling over the 12 states (three orbital wave functions coupled with four spin states) …

Young's Modulus And Internal Damping In A Vibrating Rod, H. M. Simpson, Paul J. Wolfe Jun 1975

Young's Modulus And Internal Damping In A Vibrating Rod, H. M. Simpson, Paul J. Wolfe

Paul J. Wolfe

A high‐Q mechanical oscillator in the form of a metallic rod with an eddy current driver is described. With this oscillator and a simple crystal transducer the characteristics of a mechanical oscillator can be easily studied and Young’s modulus for the metal can be found. With an inexpensive FM transducer system the internal damping of the metal can also be measured.

Dielectric Constants And Pair Interactions In Polar Molecules, Guy Nicholas Pultz Jun 1975

Dielectric Constants And Pair Interactions In Polar Molecules, Guy Nicholas Pultz

Honors Theses

Intermolecular interactions effect the physical properties of polar substances to varying degrees. One property for which there exists the possibility of separating out the various components of this interaction (pairs, triplets, etc.) is the total molar polarization of a substance. These effects are quite dependent upon temperature and pressure, so if one is going to make measurements over a large range of these variables, one must develop a system that is capable of handling the conditions. Along with this there must be the necessary instrumentation and other apparatus for measuring dielectric constants which define total molar polarization. In this thesis, …
