Electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) reactions have long been a fundamental addition to sophomore-level organic chemistry classes, allowing students the opportunity to explore the electron donating and withdrawing effects of electrons contained in the substituents of the aromatic reactant. In this paper we present preliminary findings on the nitration of methylated biphenyls using kinetic and regioselective assessments to analyze steric influences on the planarization of 2-methylbiphenyl after EAS nitration. Our preliminary findings show that nitration favors the methylated phenyl ring of 2-methylbiphenyl, indicating that the steric influence of the methyl group restricts planarization of the carbocation intermediate. Furthermore, a competition nitration …
A Community Of Fear: Emotion And The Hydro-Social Cycle In East Porterville, Michael Egge
A Community Of Fear: Emotion And The Hydro-Social Cycle In East Porterville, Michael Egge
Geography Masters Research Papers
Broader governance challenges driving water insecurity globally are well documented in the literature, however the power-laden relationships and emotions that shape water access at the household and community levels are yet to be fully investigated, especially in the context of water consolidation projects. In this article, we examine the role of emotions in mediating access to water and in the production of resource struggles among marginalized communities existing outside of conventional regulatory frameworks. We bring together two relational approaches – the hydro-social cycle and emotional political ecology – to examine water insecurity and how it manifests in the historically disadvantaged …
How State Interventions Affect Municipalities Taking The Lead In Sustainability, Jayce L. Farmer, Andres J.Rodriguez Lombeida
How State Interventions Affect Municipalities Taking The Lead In Sustainability, Jayce L. Farmer, Andres J.Rodriguez Lombeida
Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Publications
The state and local governments throughout the United States interact within a complex system of multilevel governance to advance sustainability. However, we know little about what this hierarchical system of exchanges means for municipalities as they work to achieve energy efficient government operations. Drawing on a perspective of “contested federalism”, we examine how the transaction costs of state–local government relations affect the efforts of U.S. cities to lead by example and promote sustainability within their internal processes. We apply a Bayesian item response theory approach to assess the effects of state-level fiscal and policy interventions on municipal commitments to energy …

Data-Driven Analytical Modeling Of Multiple Myeloma Cancer, U.S. Crop Production And Monitoring Process, Lohuwa Mamudu
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Globally, cancer disease is a major health issue causing a lot of deaths. The duration of time an individual diagnosed with a particular type of cancer survives has become a major area of research concern. The Kaplan Meier and Cox Proportional Hazard (Cox-PH) model have been a traditionally used method for survival analysis of cancer data. These techniques of cancer survival analysis are developed from nonparametric and semi-parametric approaches, respectively, which are not as robust as a parametric approach. In this dissertation, we proposed a new method of cancer survival analysis based on a parametric approach using multiple myeloma cancer …

Tellurorhodamine Photocatalysts In Aerobic Oxidation Reactions: Development Of Synthetic Methods And Reaction Mechanisms, Irving D. Rettig
Tellurorhodamine Photocatalysts In Aerobic Oxidation Reactions: Development Of Synthetic Methods And Reaction Mechanisms, Irving D. Rettig
Dissertations and Theses
Aerobic oxidation photocatalysis involves the use of oxygen as an oxidant species, coupled to a light driven catalyst to achieve useful chemical transformations. Catalytic aerobic oxidation reactions can be defined as either oxidase-like, in which O2 acts as an electron donor/acceptor but is not incorporated into the reaction products, or oxygenase-like where O2 acts as an electron donor/acceptor and is incorporated into the reaction products. A multitude of inorganic catalysts have been developed that can achieve a wide scope of oxidase-like or oxygenase-like reactivity, however, it is rare for a catalyst to be capable of both. We report …

Counting And Sampling Small Structures In Graph And Hypergraph Data Streams, Themistoklis Haris
Counting And Sampling Small Structures In Graph And Hypergraph Data Streams, Themistoklis Haris
Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses
In this thesis, we explore the problem of approximating the number of elementary substructures called simplices in large k-uniform hypergraphs. The hypergraphs are assumed to be too large to be stored in memory, so we adopt a data stream model, where the hypergraph is defined by a sequence of hyperedges.
First we propose an algorithm that (ε, δ)-estimates the number of simplices using O(m1+1/k / T) bits of space. In addition, we prove that no constant-pass streaming algorithm can (ε, δ)- approximate the number of simplices using less than O( m 1+1/k / T ) bits of space. Thus …

Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications
This work aims to assess water quality for irrigated agriculture, alongside perceptions and adaptations of farmers to climate change in the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER). Climate change is expected to cause a rise in temperature and variability in rainfall in the region, reducing surface water availability and raising dependence on groundwater. The study data come from surveys with 147 farmers living in the Ziway–Shala basin and water quality assessments of 162 samples from groundwater wells and surface water. Most groundwater samples were found to be unsuitable for long term agricultural use due to their high salinity and sodium adsorption ratio, …

The fate of doxycycline (DC), a second generation tetracycline antibiotic, in the environment has drawn increasing attention in recent years due to its wide usage. Little is known about the biodegradability of DC in the environment. The objective of this study was to characterize the biotransformation of DC by pure bacterial strains with respect to reaction kinetics under different environmental conditions and biotransformation products. Two bacterial strains, Brevundimonas naejangsanensis DD1 and Sphingobacterium mizutaii DD2, were isolated from chicken litter and characterized for their biotransformation capability of DC. Results show both strains rely on cometabolism to biotransform DC with tryptone as …

Optimal Stopping Problems For A Family Of Continuous-Time Markov Processes, Héctor Jasso-Fuentes, Jose-Luis Menaldi, Fidel Vásquez-Rojas
Mathematics Faculty Research Publications
In this paper we study the well-know optimal stopping problem applied to a general family of continuous-time Markov process. The approach to follow is merely analytic and it is based on the characterization of stopping problems through the study of a certain variational inequality; namely one solution of this inequality will coincide with the optimal value of the stopping problem. In addition, by means of this characterization, it is possible to find the so-named continuation region, and as a byproduct obtaining the optimal stopping time. The most of the material is based on the semigroup theory, infinitesimal generators and resolvents. …
Silicate Melt Inclusions In The New Millennium: A Review Of Recommended Practices For Preparation, Analysis, And Data Presentation, D. Schwartz
Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Mineral-hosted melt inclusions have become an important source of information on magmatic processes. As the number of melt inclusion studies increases, so does the need to establish recommended practice guidelines for collecting and reporting melt inclusion data. These guidelines are intended to ensure certain quality criteria are met and to achieve consistency among published melt inclusion data in order to maximize their utility in the future. Indeed, with the improvement of analytical techniques, new processes affecting melt inclusions are identified. It is thus critical to be able to reprocess any previously published data, such that reporting the raw data is …

For many Americans, the American Dream is a dream deferred. Recently, there has been an explosion in demand for diversity, equity, and inclusion in financial services. This has coincided with an explosion of a different kind related to delivering financial services through innovations in technology, otherwise known as FinTech. We have seen a plethora of FinTech applications on our smartphones, ranging from online lending to remote deposit making. While these applications provide potential opportunities to level the playing field for those whose dream has been deferred, there remain challenges.
