Determination Of Metals And Microplastics In Sediment From Oyster Reefs In The Mississippi Sound, Shelby Goza
Determination Of Metals And Microplastics In Sediment From Oyster Reefs In The Mississippi Sound, Shelby Goza
Honors Theses
This research centers on the determination of metals (Cd, Pb, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) and microplastics (MPs) in marine sediment from oyster reefs in the Mississippi Sound Estuary. Oysters (Crassostrea virginica) are a vital part of the Gulf Coast economy, but their population has dramatically declined in recent years due to multiple stressors, including oil spills and fluctuations in salinity from flooding. Increasingly frequent flooding events also introduce high loads of MPs and sediments containing heavy metals from the Mississippi River. These pollutants can have deleterious effects on oyster biology; however, they have not been adequately …

Computational Investigation Of Stellar Cooling, Noble Gas Nucleation, And Organic Molecular Spectra, Jax Dallas
Honors Theses
Since the advent and optimization of the Hartree-Fock method, quantum chemistry has been utilized to investigate systems operating on timeframes and environments traditionally unavailable to bench-top chemistry. As computational methods have grown more robust and less time consuming, quantum chemistry has been utilized to investigate a range of fields, including the steadily growing discipline of computational astrochemistry. Through the lens of computational astrochemistry, chemistry that occurred billions of years ago can be explored with equal clarity to that which is currently happening in the cosmos. The work presented throughout this thesis is a series of investigations into different timeframes of …

Lesson Plan: Sounds Of Your Study Site, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 07: Animal Adaptation & Behavior
In this lesson, students will conduct a survey of noise in the study site. They will begin to explore the idea that noise has an impact on the ecosystem and its inhabitants. In small groups, they will use a decibel meter, data sheet and aerial photograph of the study site to collect data on a section of the site. Students will then share this information with classmates to create a map of the noise of your schoolyard. Then students will listen to prerecorded bird songs against urban noise. They will compare the bird songs and the characteristics that make them …

Lesson Plan: Behavioral Plasticity, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 07: Animal Adaptation & Behavior
In the previous lessons, students learned about the importance of noise in the urban environment. In response to urban noise as well as other characteristics of urban ecosystems, organisms modify their existing behaviors to maximize their fitness and likelihood of survival. This lesson focuses on behavioral plasticity, which is the idea that organisms’ behaviors are flexible and can be modified in response to their environment. Students complete an activity in which they investigate the plasticity of their own behaviors. The class then discusses how this analogy is similar and different compared to urban species as well as how the plasticity …

Module 07: Animal Adaptation & Behavior
Species constantly engage in a variety of behaviors or activities that help increase their chance of survival. For example, a bird may build a nest or a coyote might communicate to other coyotes through howling. In this activity, you are going to explore the plasticity of behaviors – the ability of an organism to change or modify its behaviors based on the external conditions. Specifically, you will examine your own behaviors, but then consider how your behaviors would be similar or different from other species. You will then consider how the plasticity of an organism’s behaviors impacts its chance of …

Lesson Plan: Comparing Our Results, Center For Urban Resilience
Module 07: Animal Adaptation & Behavior
The purpose of this lesson is for students to compare their findings to that of other similar studies. The goal of the lesson is two-fold. First, students should understand the big idea that organisms living in urban ecosystems have modified their behavior in response to the impacts of the humans that live there. Second, this lesson should reinforce the concept of sample size as well as help students understand that we still have many gaps in our understanding of animals in cities.

Evolving Efficient Floor Plans For Hospital Emergency Rooms, Alex Ramsey
Evolving Efficient Floor Plans For Hospital Emergency Rooms, Alex Ramsey
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
Genetic Algorithms find wide use in optimization problems across many fields of research, including crowd simulation. This paper proposes that genetic algorithms could be used to create better floor plans for hospital emergency rooms, potentially saving critical time in high risk situations. The genetic algorithm implemented makes use of a hospital-specific crowd simulation to accurately evaluate the effectiveness of produced layouts. The results of combining genetic algorithms with a crowd simulation are promising. Future work may improve upon these results to produce better, more optimal hospital floor plans.
Groundwater Education: An Investigation Of Students' Use Of A Groundwater Modeling Tool, Holly White
Groundwater Education: An Investigation Of Students' Use Of A Groundwater Modeling Tool, Holly White
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Groundwater is a critical resource for life on Earth. However, our groundwater resources are at risk due to human activities, making this a topic of importance within K-12 and undergraduate environmental education. Yet, students hold alternative conceptions and may have limited awareness about groundwater systems. One way to support students’ learning is by incorporating computer-based modeling tools into classrooms. Here, we explore the use a groundwater modeling tool, the Hydrogeology Challenge (HGC), among two age groups of students: seventh grade students and undergraduate students. In the seventh-grade population, we investigated how students relate or map model components to their real-world …
Small Molecule Activation By Transition Metal Complexes: Studies With Quantum Mechanical And Machine Learning Methodologies, Justin Kyle Kirkland
Small Molecule Activation By Transition Metal Complexes: Studies With Quantum Mechanical And Machine Learning Methodologies, Justin Kyle Kirkland
Doctoral Dissertations
One of the largest areas of study in the fields of chemistry and engineering is that of activation of small molecules such as nitrogen, oxygen and methane. Herein we study the activation of such molecules by transition metal compounds using quantum mechanical methods in order to understand the complex chemistry behind these processes. By understanding these processes, we can design and propose novel catalytic species, and through the use of data-driven machine learning methods, we are able to accelerate materials discovery.
Fine Tuning Rhii Complexes With Tethered, Axial Coordination: Structural Studies And Application To Diazo-Mediated Cyclopropanation Reactions, Derek Cressy
Doctoral Dissertations
The cyclopropane moiety is an attractive synthetic target due to its application in pharmaceuticals and medicinal research. One effective strategy involves the formation of metal carbenoid species from diazo reagents. The carbenoid then reacts with an olefin substrate to generate the cyclopropane ring. Of the metal complexes that can facilitate this reaction, dirhodium(II) paddlewheel complexes are arguably the most prevalent catalysts. This is because modification of the bridging ligands enables control to be exerted over the catalyst’s chemoselectivity and enantioselectivity. Exploiting the axial site as a control element is often overlooked as strongly coordinated Lewis bases inhibit catalysis. Despite this, …
Spectroscopic Investigations Of Complex Van Der Waals Systems, Sabine N. Neal
Spectroscopic Investigations Of Complex Van Der Waals Systems, Sabine N. Neal
Doctoral Dissertations
Complex chalcogenides are superb platforms for revealing the interplay between structure, charge, and magnetism as well as the unusual states of matter that develop under external stimuli. These van der Waals solids can also be exfoliated into few- and single-layer sheets that sport a number of unexpected properties, including quantum confinement, magnetic excitations and size-induced magnetic states, and symmetry breaking. A commonality amongst sheet studies is the role of Raman scattering to assure sample quality, probe even-symmetry vibrational modes, and uncover single-layer properties. Odd-symmetry modes were, however, completely underexplored in few-layer materials. Infrared spectroscopy is well suited for examining the …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications Of Nucleobase-Functionalized Conjugated Polymers, Sina Sabury
Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding the effect of the functional groups at the terminus of the side chains is important for developing conjugated polymers through side chain engineering. Nucleobases, which are known for their multi-functionality, have not been deeply studied as functionality in conjugated polymers due to synthetic challenges. The overarching goal of my dissertation is to design, synthesize, characterize conjugated polymers bearing nucleobase functionality in their side chains and demonstrate their utility in various applications. Stille cross-coupling and direct arylation polymerization are used to synthesize adenine- and thymine-containing conjugated polymers. Monomer design requirements for successful polymerization are studied and conditions that optimize polymerization …
Motor Control-Based Assessment Of Therapy Effects In Individuals Post-Stroke: Implications For Prediction Of Response And Subject-Specific Modifications, Ashley Rice
Doctoral Dissertations
Producing a coordinated motion such as walking is, at its root, the result of healthy communication pathways between the central nervous system and the musculoskeletal system. The central nervous system produces an electrical signal responsible for the excitation of a muscle, and the musculoskeletal system contains the necessary equipment for producing a movement-driving force to achieve a desired motion. Motor control refers to the ability an individual has to produce a desired motion, and the complexity of motor control is a mathematical concept stemming from how the electrical signals from the central nervous system translate to muscle activations. Exercising a …
Hazardous Weather And Human Response In The Southeastern United States, Daniel Burow
Hazardous Weather And Human Response In The Southeastern United States, Daniel Burow
Doctoral Dissertations
Effectively mitigating the human costs of future hazardous weather events requires examining meteorological threats, their long-term patterns, and human response to these events. The southeastern United States is a region that has both a high climatological risk and a high societal vulnerability to many different meteorological hazards. In this dissertation, I study hazardous weather and human response in the Southeast through three different lenses: identifying uniquely simultaneous hazards posed by tropical cyclones, assessing precipitation and synoptic weather patterns on hazardous weather days, and examining patterns in intended response to tornado watches. I find that simultaneous and collocated tornado and flash …

Spectroscopic Properties Of Ferroic Superlattices, Shiyu Fan
Doctoral Dissertations
The interplay between charge, structure, magnetism, and orbitals leads to rich physics and exotic cross-coupling in multifunctional materials. Superlattices provide a superb platform to study the complex interactions between different degrees of freedom. In this dissertation, I present a spectroscopic investigation of natural and engineered superlattices including FexTaS2 and (LuFeO3)m/(LuFe2O4)1 under external stimuli of temperature and magnetic field as well as chemical substitution. Studying the phase transitions, symmetry-breaking, and complex interface interactions from a microscopic viewpoint enhances fundamental understanding of coupling mechanism between different order parameters and the …
Susceptibility Of Riverine Fishes To Anthropogenically-Linked Trauma: Strikes From Hydropower Turbine Blades, Ryan K. Saylor
Susceptibility Of Riverine Fishes To Anthropogenically-Linked Trauma: Strikes From Hydropower Turbine Blades, Ryan K. Saylor
Doctoral Dissertations
Hydropower accounts for nearly 40% of renewable electricity generation in the US; however, dams significantly impact the surrounding aquatic ecosystems. One of the most visible impacts of hydropower―beyond the dam itself―is the direct negative impacts (injury or death) to fish populations that must pass through hydropower turbines to access desired downstream habitat. During passage, fishes face many potential stressors that can cause severe injuries and often leads to high rates of mortality. In this dissertation, I have focused on quantifying how fishes respond to impacts from turbine blades that may occur during turbine passage. Laboratory research into blade strike impact …
