Genetic Improvement Of Bermudagrass For Hay Producers, W. F. Anderson, L. Baxter, R. N. Gates, E. Rios

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.) is considered the most valuable warm-season perennial grass for hay producers in the Southeastern United States. Bermudagrass genotypes have overall good forage quality, high yields, and store well. However, there are challenges to producing good hay for the market. First, early green-up in the spring is needed to allow for four to five productive clippings during the summer. When first establishing production fields, quick emergence and cover are important for reducing weeds. Forage bermudagrass is somewhat tolerant to drought, however, low rainfall substantially reduces yields. If rainfall is too abundant, it is difficult to have timely …

Amphicarpic Legumes For Tropical Pasture Persistence, R Schultze-Kraft, A Schmidt, H Hohn

IGC Proceedings (1993-2023)

Amphicarpy, by which a plant produces underground seeds in addition to aerial fruits, is found in many plant families and in species of at least 15 legume genera. First studies on the tropical Centrosema rotundifolium and subtropical Macroptilium panduratum revealed for both species, besides their stoloniferous growth habit, two important mechanisms for survival under unfavorable conditions: (1) Underground meristems and reserve organs, and (2) regeneration from a soil seed reserve based on underground, aerial-flowering independent, seed production. Underground seed production was for both species particularly high on very sandy soils, but amphicarpy enables the plants to exhibit a plasticity response …

A Coupled Model Of Population, Poaching, And Economic Dynamics To Assess Rhino Conservation Through Legal Trade, Henry Doyle, Kylie Champagne, Ditto Rajpal, Grace Seebeck, David J. Gerberry

Spora: A Journal of Biomathematics

Rhinoceros populations in Africa are in peril largely due to the high value of their horns and the poaching that ensues. The strategy of legalizing the international trade of rhino horn is receiving increased support among both the people and government officials in Africa. Many in the international conservation community remain opposed to the idea. The legalization strategy is straightforward in theory: legalizing the trade of rhino horn will introduce a large quantity of horn to the market, the increased supply will lead to lower prices for rhino horn, and lower prices will reduce the overall poaching pressure these animals …

The PI3K pathway is a major cell signaling axis in eukaryotic cells. This pathway employs the second messenger, inositol phospholipid PI(3,4,5)P3, which is responsible for activating Akt and other kinases creating a cascade of signals. The enzyme, SH2-containing inositol-5’-phosphatase (SHIP), plays a key role in this pathway by maintaining the delicate balance of PI(3,4,5)P3. Modulation of SHIP activity through the use of small molecule inhibitors may be utilized for the treatment of certain types of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes. A high-throughput screen identified the small molecule SHIP1 inhibitor, NSC23922, a mixture of 3α- and 3β-aminocholestane. These diastereomers were synthesized …

Development Of Stochastic And Time-Dependent Quantum Chemical Methods For Accurate Description Of Light-Matter Interactions With Applications In Photoionization And Inverse Photoemission In Nanomaterials, Nicole Spanedda Jan 2024

Development Of Stochastic And Time-Dependent Quantum Chemical Methods For Accurate Description Of Light-Matter Interactions With Applications In Photoionization And Inverse Photoemission In Nanomaterials, Nicole Spanedda

Dissertations - ALL

There are three main focuses of this work. First, the theoretical details of the Stratified Stochastic Enumeration of Molecular Orbitals (SSE-MO) method is presented, along with its application for calculating ionization potentials (IPs) of quantum dots. The SSE-MO method can readily be applied for the purpose of efficiently and accurately calculating ionization potentials, by constructing the frequency-dependent self-energy operator and then subsequently, solving the associated Dyson equation. Constructing the frequency-dependent self-energy operator is challenging because the scaling of the computational cost with respect to system size, becomes prohibitive for large systems, such as quantum dots. This is due to the …

Construction Of Quot-Schemes, Majid Dehghani Jan 2024

Construction Of Quot-Schemes, Majid Dehghani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Quot Scheme is a construction representing parameter spaces for quotient objects of sheaves or coherent modules over a scheme. It encapsulates families of quotients by fixing a certain quotient's structure. The Hilbert Scheme, a specific type of Quot Scheme, focuses on parameterizing subschemes of a fixed projective space by fixing their Hilbert polynomials. After recalling the basic concepts of the theory, we explain the Grothendieck’s Quot scheme construction and its Grassmannian embedding. Then we continue to an explicit construction of Quot scheme in the case of graded modules over graded rings.
